Volvo S90

Volvo S90 available in 1 variant

Volvo has brought a new sedan to rival the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E Class and Audi A6 in India. The model is called S90 and it was first unveiled in January 2016 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The car’s design received a positive feedback early in its inception stage and it won the Production Car Design of the Year award for 2015.

Although the S90 is not a direct successor of 2nd generation S80, it has now become the flagship sedan in the company’s line-up. It has more in common with Volvo’s XC90 (SUV) than the S80. Both the vehicles have new design cues, they have similarities in cabin ambience and more importantly they are built on the same platform – SPA (Scalable Product Architecture). The S90 has replaced the S80 in all international markets.

In India, the S80 has been launched with just one engine option for now. It is powered by 2.0 litre diesel engine that churns out 187 bhp at 4520 rpm and has 400 Nm of torque at 1750-2500 rpm. It is mated to Aisin automatic gearbox that ends power to the front wheels in D4 variant (available in India). With its D5 trim, this Volvo sedan is a 4WD.

The concept coupe that Volvo had showcased for the S90 got transformed into the production version car with less aggressive curves. However, it does retain some crucial design elements. It has a semi-coupe stance with soft curves and its slabby rear styling may remind you of the American sedans from 1990s.

The trapezoidal grille has a concave profile and looks regal in front of the wide bonnet. Headlights have trademark Volvo design (Thor’s hammer) and are all LEDs. There are dummy air intakes on the sides with highlights of chrome and LED driving lamps.

Moving on the sides you will notice the coupe like roofline and the large outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) with integrated blinkers. The S90 gets 18 inch alloys with 10 spoke design. These are shod with 245/45 R18 rubber. According to Volvo these are the lowest profile tyres offered in this segment and add to the looks of the car. In India however they are not very practical considering the poor condition of our roads.

At the back, it’s the split tail light design that looks eccentric. The exhaust pipes outlined by chrome are integrated with the rear bumper. Like its siblings, the S90 also has VOLVO spelt on its trunk lid. On the whole, the rear end styling will polarise opinions. It does not look as stylish as the front.

Inside the car, a large part of the design is shared with the XC90’s cabin. And that is not bad. There are touches of the Scandinavian design which can be seen in minimalist styling, toned down use of walnut wood inlays, leather and subtle chrome.

The white colour scheme of the interiors can easily get duller in dusty India weather. The three spoke steering wheel draped in white and grey is also likely to attract dirt soon. It’s surprising to see that Volvo offers manual adjustment for the steering wheel. Its rivals have powered adjustment.

Even the centre console of this car has a minimalist theme. It is a platform with walnut wooden inlay and carries the gear selector, engine start button, drive modes and parking mode -all neatly arranged towards the driver’s side of the platform.

The walnut panel towards the passenger’s side slides back and underneath it are the cup holders and some more space for small things.

As for the seating space, the S90 has a comfy driver’s seat with 12 way adjustment. It also comes with additional safety features. If the car goes off track in an accident sensors activate the seat to pad up the back and lumbar areas to minimise any spinal injury. The front seats offer adequate thigh support and there is plenty of legroom. The seats have integrated neck restraints.

Instrument console is TFT based. You can change its colour and display offers detailed information on speed, RPM, driving mode, gearbox sections, external temperature, music source.

The infotainment set up comprises Bowers & Wilkins music system which is better than Audi A6’s Bose system. There are 19 speakers including 7 tweeters - driven by 12 channel 1400 W amplifier. It has Apple CarPlay, Navigation and Lane keeping assistance. The touchscreen is intuitive and responds well to inputs.

Volvo S90 brings a host of comfort and safety features – Park Assist Pilot, Hill Start Assist, and Side protection Impact system airbags among others.

At the rear seat the space is luxurious for two passengers and enough for three. The under thigh support is not as good as the front seats. There is a separate dual zone climate control for the occupants. AC vents are placed on the B pillar. With the coupe roofline, the headroom at the rear is enough but not generous. Turban wearing people might have a problem.

The centre armrest is large and has under-lid storage space. Part of its lid also opens back into the trunk which gets a volume of 500 litres. As a special feature for India, it has a plastic lining all over its base. The opening of the trunk is rather small but good enough for usual luggage.

Volvo S90 is available in three colours – Black Metallic, Crystal White Pearl Metallic, Magic Blue Metallic and Mussel Blue Metallic. It will cost you Rs 57.96 lakh (ex showroom price, Delhi) and the D4 trim available in India is the only version at present. The more powerful D5 variant with 235 bhp engine is expected in future. Petrol versions may not be launched here but Volvo mentioned that encouraged by the response to plug-in hybrid version of XC90, they may bring a hybrid S90 too.
