Toyota Yaris

Toyota Yaris available in 8 variants

Toyota sells its Yaris mid-size sedan across the world and it is rather surprising that it took the company so long to finally launch this car in the Indian market. This despite the fact that  Toyota not having any credible offering in the mid-size Sedan segment in India where the likes of Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Maruti Ciaz are making a good amount of money. But now finally we have witnessed the launch of Toyota Yaris in the Indian market in the price range of Rs 8.75-14.07 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The design of the car looks upmarket although compared to the competition; dimensionally the car feels a bit smaller especially in the profile. The new design language of Toyota can be immediately felt in terms of dynamic nose, large air dam, sculpted bonnet, aggressive bumpers, and vertical fog lamp housing. In the profile, the car has a much uncluttered look and most of the buyers will be going to like this design element. It's not all the things follow the plane Jane pattern and the way roof slope into the rear makes this design quite a stylish one.

The alloy wheels feel a bit smaller as they are unable to fill the big wheel arches but then Toyota has made this conscious decision based on the affinity of Indian buyers towards the high fuel efficiency. The 15-inch tires are going to extract maximum mileage out of every drop of fuel although to the aesthetic perspective, these are not able to make any lasting impression. The top of the line variant of Toyota Yaris comes with projector headlamps with LED daytime running lamps, alloy wheels, chrome door handles, and outside rearview mirrors with integrated blinkers. Inside the cabin, the quality of most of the materials is up to the mark and at par with the competition. Still, there is some plastic slow down the dashboard which could have been better. The levels of fit and finish are acceptable and there is plenty of storage and utility space throughout the cabin. The top of the line variant gets leather seat upholstery, sporty Steering Wheel with mounted controls, paddle shifters in the top-of-the-line automatic variant, reverse camera parking system, front and rear parking sensors, 7-inch touchscreen LED infotainment system with navigation and gesture control, 6 speakers, USB, Bluetooth, steering mounted controls, roof mounted air conditioning vents with ambient lighting, 8-way power adjustable driver seat, cruise control, rear sunshade, automatic headlamps with follow-me-home features, rain sensing wipers, electric power steering, front and rear power windows, electrically adjustable and foldable outside rear view Mirrors, rear seat armrest with cup holder, acoustic and vibration controlling glass, and push button start-stop system.

Under the Hood, there is an only option available in terms of 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine capable of putting out 107 PS along with 140 Nm of Max Power and max torque respectively. There is no diesel engine on offer neither there is a probability of getting such in the future. The engine is coupled with a six-speed manual transmission which channels the power to the front Wheels of the car. Toyota has also offered a 7-speed continuous variable transmission (CVT) option to the prospective buyers and top-of-the-line variant VX CVT features the convenience of paddle shifters too. The good thing is that Toyota has offered both manual and automatic transmission options in all the four variants available in the  range. One area where Toyota has focused very hard is on the safety and security of the occupants. Toyota Yaris comes equipped with 7 safety airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System, electronic brake force distribution, and brake assist as a standard part of equipment across the range. This means even the base J variant has got all these safety features and this is indeed a welcome move on the part of manufacturers who are increasingly becoming conscious of the security needs of the passengers. In addition to these features, the top of the line variant of Toyota Yaris have got the convenience of Hill start assist, vehicle stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system, front and rear fog lamps, rear defogger, impact sensing auto door unlock, speed sensing auto door lock, front and rear power windows, and engine immobilizer  as the safety and security features. In the Indian market, this new offering from the Toyota is going to compete against the established market players like Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento, Skoda Rapid, and Maruti Ciaz among others. Overall, the Toyota Yaris is one of the sensible offerings from the Japanese car maker which performs expectedly well on all the critical evaluation parameters. It may not have the capability to excel in one or another department but as an overall proposition, it ticks all the right boxes.
