Toyota Fortuner 2.7 4x2 AT Features & Specifications, ARAI Mileage and Price

Toyota has launched the Toyota Fortuner at a price of 26.34 lakhs. The 4x2 AT petrol model costs 27.61 lakhs and will be up against the SsangyongRexton and Ford Endeavour.

Specifications

The Toyota Fortuner was the ultimate SUV. Or, it appeared to be. It had that big car feel that people desired. Its gigantic proportions coupled with an innate desire for a big car in this coun-try meant that the Fortuner sold very well. While the Innova was positioned as a car for a large family, the Fortuner was positioned as an SUV, a car that could take on anything that was thrown at it. It wasn’t without its flaws, though.Even though it performed very well in rough terrains and long routes, an iffy suspension meant that it wasn’t very agile in crowded city roads.Coupled with its gargantuan proportions, it made other cars look better for inner city driving. The New Fortuner is based on Toyota’s Next Generation Platform (TNGA) and seeks to supplant the Fortuner with a better version.

The Engine in the new Fortuner is 2.7 litre Dual VVTi with four inline cylinders that have a total displacement of 2694cc. The engine produces 162bhp@5200rpm of power and a torque of 245Nm@4000rpm and is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission. All of this is put to good use since the car takes off from the start and keeps its composure even at higher speeds.

The TNGA platform ensures that the suspension is stiffer than before and can easily take on turns too. This helps in making the drive easier. The manual transmission has a faster response than the automatic one. The automatic one waits a bit before actually changing gears once you press the paddle. This might take some getting used to, but it is alright. The handling is much improved, though. The Fortuner handles very well on corners without any significant body roll, which is impressive for a car this size.

Exteriors & Interiors

The earlier Fortuner had a very butch look and deliberately so. It gave the the car an imposing persona. Now that the Fortuner has some brand recognition of its own to work with, Toyota has refined its overall look. This first thing that strikes is the amount of chrome that has been used in the front. The large front grille uses a fair bit of chrome. Then there is chrome running alongside the grille that wraps around headlights, which also feature daytime running lights now, and runs along the bonnet. The grille extends downwards too, and there is chrome going around the fog lamps too. While the front has changed, the sides are largely the same, save for a kink near the slanting C-pillar. There’s chrome running along the sides too, from the start of the front door and right upto the D-pillar. The AT model also gets 17 inch alloy wheels. The rear is similar to last year’s model, with a large Fortuner badge. The only change is the lights, which have a fluid, look to them.

The interiors are also very good. They have generous space inside, with good legroom and headroom. The seats are bettor too. They have leather upholstery and look premium. There is leather elsewhere, with some corner, the steering wheel and the gear knob getting leather treatment too.The rear passenger s only gets A/c vents, but no controls. Upfront, there is a large touchscreen console that has multiple connectivity options show relevant information. The heads up display now shows information apposite to the ongoing trip and is completely digital. The steering has voice command controls.

Safety

The car comes with 7 airbags standard, has ABS (with EBD) and also comes with ESP as stan-dard. The AT model also has Hill Hold function and other general safety features.

Although I am happy with my Fortuner, I had some issues regarding the practicality of the car. This is disturbing especially as I have spent a lot of money to buy this SUV and wish that Toyota could have given more attention towards these niggles. There are bottle holders on each of the door but onl....Read More
