Marketed as the ‘business class of SUV’s’, the Renault Koleos is a shining example of luxury meeting practicality. Launched in India in 2011, this 4 door SUV was first introduced as a concept car at the Geneva Motorshow in 2000. Thus the body design is based on the Renault Koleos and Renault Egeus concept cars.
In terms of styling, the Koleos looks like a complete macho SUV ready to take on the rough roads. Roof rails, an integrated LED high mounted stop lamp and the 17” two tone alloy wheels add to the dynamism of this burly vehicle. The dual toned ORVM’s are electrically foldable and have integrated turn indicators which impart a classy finish to the car’s appeal. The new chrome laden front grille with a huge Renault sign in the middle looks sporty and bold. A split tailgate is an interesting feature to make loading and unloading from the boot (that offers a storage space of 450 litres) easily accessible.
As for the styling on the interiors, many small details make for some very handy additions. For example, at the rear there are two discreet under-floor storage spaces with a capacity of 5 litres each. There are foldable tables with glass holders at the back of the front seats to add to the comfort. Even the central rear armrest can be removed to store long objects.
Loaded with some smart technology, this SUV not only fascinates but spoils you too in ways that you wouldn’t mind. It comes with a Smart Access Card that only needs to be on the person and in turn it automatically locks/ unlocks the car depending on the person’s nearness to the car. Further, there is a start/stop button on the Smart Card which helps you to start or stop the engine with the press of a single button. What’s more, with a cruise control and speed limiter embedded on the steering wheel control, the car cruises at a fixed and maintained speed without having to strain the accelerator and the speed limiter helps limit the top speed of the car. The rear parking sensors are always a handy feature while parking in tense spaces.
This car is no less when evaluated for safety concerns as well. Rain sensing wipers automatically go on and off as per the intensity of the rain felt on the windshield. There is also an automatic light sensor which turns on the lights as per the light conditions outside. Equipped with air bags from all sides (2 front air bags, 2 side air bags and 2 curtain air bags) this car is prepared to protect its passengers from any sudden jolts or collisions. An Anti Lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) is obviously there as a feature in the Renault Koleos.
The Koleos comes in the choice of three colours: White Pearl, Ultra Silver and Black Metallic and is available at the price of 24.07 lakhs (Ex showroom price- Delhi). Currently available in a single variant, it is powered with a 4 cylinder, 16 Valve Diesel Direct Injection Common Rail Turbocharged engine. This roadie has a 6 speed automatic transmission. The maximum power is 150 PS @ 4000 rpm and the maximum torque is 320 Nm @ 2000 rpm. It houses a fuel tank capacity of 65 litres, and as per Renault’s claim it capably delivers a mileage of 13.7 kms/litre.
Koleos has won some very prestigious awards internationally. It received three awards at Planet 4X4 awards for Compact SUV, Best Newcomer and 4X4 of the year in 2008.
With a Bose sound system (with 8 high performance speakers) duly installed in this SUV, it is hardly resistible to take this beauty out for a spin to some faraway place. And given some incredible features loaded under the hood, it’s not just going to cruise on the roads but also a way into your hearts.
