Nissan Terrano

Nissan Terrano available in 5 variants

Nissan vehicles have been earlier badge engineered by the French carmaker Renault. But when the Terrano came in 2013, it was Nissan that had used the partner company’s Duster to fill a gap in its product portfolio. As per the understanding between the two manufacturers however, it had to price its Terrano higher than the Duster. This is one of the main factors why the Terrano has not seen so much success with sales as its cousin did.

Now, 4 years later, in 2017 Nissan has given a mild cosmetic makeover to its SUV, added some more features and importantly it also added the AMT option to the more powerful diesel engine of Terrano.

After the update the three engine options and gearboxes for the SUV include:

  • 1.6 litre, 4 cylinder petrol engine with 102 bhp (at 5850 rpm) and 145 Nm of torque (3750 rpm) – this is coupled with 5 speed manual gearbox
  • 1.5 litre, 4 cylinder diesel engine with 84 bhp (at 3750 rpm) and 200 Nm of torque (at 1900 rpm) – this is coupled with 5 speed manual gearbox
  • 1.5 litre, 4 cylinder diesel engine with 109 bhp (at 3900 rpm) and 245 Nm of torque (at 2250 rpm) – this is coupled with 6 speed manual and (new) 6 speed AMT gearbox

The styling and build quality of Terrano has been admired in its original model and Nissan has therefore made very minor changes in the exterior design. The thick chrome grille pattern with Nissan logo in its centre is the same as on the older model. Headlamps have seen a minor update with 4 pod design that make the front look tad more aggressive.  Fog lamp housing on the bumper is now bordered by chrome.

There are no major changes on the sides too. Terrano’s length measures 4331 mm and its wheelbase is 2673 mm. With a height of 1671 mm it is shorter than some of the competitors. The silvered roof rails help in enhancing the look of its height. Both Duster and Terrano have the same ground clearance of 250 mm. This is 5 mm more than that of Ford Eco Sport.

Nissan has replaced the tacky looking silver painted outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) with body coloured, electrically folding ones.  These also have integrated side turn indicators. The wheel arches of this SUV are notably flared and Terrano continues to run on 16 inch diamond cut alloy wheels with 215/65 R16 tyres.

At the back you will see new split design tail lamps for the updated SUV. These are LED units and their shape helps in differentiating the Terrano from Duster. There is thick chrome garnish over the number plate and the Nissan logo sits above that.

Below the bumper there is a scuff plate and the exhaust pipe tip is seen on the left side – an attribute matching with the Duster.

Nissan has given more updates in the cabin than on the outer styling of Terrano. There is a new colour theme in the form of black and chocolate brown combination. The three spoke steering wheel gets extra highlights of silver and mounted switches for audio control. In front of the steering wheel, the instrument console also looks new. Whereas there were two standard dials (speedometer and tachometer) in the older version, this one takes in the multi-information display too within a new, third dial.

To add a more premium touch to the refreshed Terrano, Nissan now offers a 7 inch touchscreen based infotainment system. It includes features for navigation, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay however have been given a miss. A high mounted USB port can be used with any mobile phone kept on the dashboard top.

It may be mentioned here that not all variants of the new Terrano get steering mounted controls, touchscreen infotainment system and the driver arm rest. These are exclusive to the XV Premium trim that brings the AMT and is priced at Rs 14.20 lakh. This AMT version also has cruise control. The quality of materials used throughout the cabin is a grade higher than in the older model.

Front seats are comfortable with enough legroom and the driver’s seat now gets an attached armrest. The seat can be adjusted for height and lumbar support. Steering wheel is tilt adjustable.

Safety features in top end Terrano include dual front airbags, ABS, EBD with brake assist, reverse parking sensors, rear defogger and ESP system with hill start assist.

For the rear seat occupants, the legroom is enough but not plentiful. The seat backrest is reclined well for comfort and there are headrests including one for rear centre passenger. If the middle of the seat is not occupied, you can flip down a centre armrest which also has 2 cup holders.

Nissan Terrano’s boot has storage space of 475 litres which can be increased to 1064 litres on tumbling down the rear seat backrest. The tail gate does not hinge on to sides. It opens in an upward action as for hatchbacks. This large boot has a practical layout and is one of the strong points of Terrano.

The AMT version comes with Eco mode and it has fuel efficiency range of 16 km/litre to 19 km /litre.

Body colour options are Sapphire Black, Blade Silver, Pearl White, and Fire Red and Sandstone Brown of which the last one is a new addition. The price for Nissan Terrano starts at Rs 9.99 lakh for base version XE Diesel and XL Petrol and it goes up to Rs 14.20 lakh for XV Diesel AMT version (all prices ex showroom Delhi).

The latest entrant in the fast growing compact SUV market of India, Nissan Terrano is known as Nissan Mistral in some other markets. It was also manufactured by the company’s Spanish subsidiary Nissan Motor Iberica S.A for markets in Europe and was marketed as Nissan Terrano II there. Furthermore, the car was supplied under an OEM deal to Ford Europe for sale as Ford Maverick in the region. October 2013 saw the formal launch of Nissan Terrano in India. Within a price range of Rs 9.6 to 12.46 lakhs, this Nissan SUV competes primarily against the Ford EcoSport and then Tata Safari. There is also some degree of cannibalism with its own cousin in India – the Renault Duster.

While essentially the Terrano may look like a rescaled Duster, Nissan engineers have changed almost all body parts except the roof and the rear quarter panel. The design looks quite mature and sophisticated while still retaining the important, solid SUV profile. The front gets a completely different design (when compared to Duster) and it is quite inline with the Nissan family looks. There is a large grille between which the Nissan logo sits, and new character lines on the bonnet. The angular but sleek headlamps blend well into the front grille. The single colour front bumper is also more sculpted and houses the fog lamps while the air dam ends in butch looking bash guard. Terrano’s side profile is comparable to the Duster but the door panels are more rounded with a new crease running along the side and blackened B and C pillars.

At the rear you see stylish split tail-lamps – and these are fully functional, not just dummy plastic bits added on to the sides for filling the metal gaps. The sharp rear design of this SUV complements its complete silhouette well. Top end variant comes with 16 inch alloy wheels, while others have stylised steel wheels.

Inside the beige coloured cabin a new steering wheel, squared AC vents in centre with circular ones on sides, and revised storage space on top of the dashboard are some features that draw attention. The refreshed central console gets 2 DIN audio system and the buttons have a nice feel. You also get the option of a 6.1 inch touch-screen for the music system. Subtle use of chrome and silver garnishes give a plush feel to the cabin. Seats are sufficiently comfortable and there is adequate legroom at back too.

One let-down of the design is that the knob for ORVM adjustment has been positioned quite impractically – it’s hidden below the parking brake lever. Also, the dashboard plastic feels somewhat hard.

The driving feel in this SUV is quite pleasant. Terrano is almost as fast as the Duster and does a 0-100 kms/ hour in 12.7 seconds. With a wonderful ride quality, nothing slows a Terrano down and it simply ploughs through poor roads without letting you feel much of jerks. Body roll is very restrained and this Nissan car grips well to give you the confidence to push it hard through winding roads.

Nissan Terrano has been launched in four variants, one being in petrol. So you have a choice between:

Base variant XE D with 1.5 litre diesel engine

Mid segment variants XL D (1.5 litre diesel engine) and XL P (1.6 litre petrol engine)
Top end variant XL D Plus (1.5 litre diesel engine)

The diesel variant with 85PS has 5 speed manual transmission while the one with 110PS has 6 speed manual transmission. The petrol variant comes with 5 speed manual gearbox.

While the diesel driven models have fuel efficiency of up to 20.5 kms/ litre, the petrol Terrano has fuel economy of 13.2 kms/litre (as per Nissan).

This stylish SUV comes in six beautiful colours that include Pearl White, Sterling Grey, Blade Silver, Fire Red, Sapphire Black, and Bronze Grey.

Terrano being a fairly new SUV has not yet created waves with regards to awards and accolades. However, it has been fairly successful internationally in forms of Mistral and Ford Maverick. And indeed it has a handsome and premium looking design while also being one of the best riding cars in its segment.
