Nissan Micra is a revolutionary hatchback created and designed by Nissan Motors. The car has been one of the most successful models in the automakers entire history with company selling more than 6 million copies of the car around the world.
This car was originally launched in 1982 to challenge the successful run of Honda City and Toyota Starlet. Since then we have seen four generations of the car. The second generation of the car was launched in 1992, third in 2002 and the fourth in 2010. Micra, since its launch has won many awards and accolades. It won The JD Power Asia Pacific award in the premium compact segment, 2011 among others.
In India the Micra is manufactured in the company’s manufacturing facility situated near Chennai. The commercial production of the car began on May 24, 2010. The car competes in India with cars like Maruti Suzuki Swift, Ford Figo, and Chevrolet Beat etc.
Micra has been recently given a facelift and has become more competitive keeping in mind the festive season that is about to start in India. It is now powered by a behemoth DOHC 12 Valve 3 cylinder engine in Petrol and a SOHC 8 Valve 4 Cylinder powerhouse powers the diesel variants. A big surprise comes in the transmission area with a CVT (Continuously variable Transmission) being the latest addition to the arsenal. The new auto transmission gives an increase in the overall acceleration figures and also offers better fuel economy.
The petrol engine produces 75 PS of power and 104 Nm of torque giving a fuel economy of 18.44 km to litres, while the 1.5-litre diesel motor churns out 65 PS of power and 160 Nm of torque and gives a mileage of 23.08 kms to litres.
In the interiors the car’s dashboard has gone under the knife and a new piano black dashboard has come in. The plastic quality has also been improved inside the car. On the steering wheel itself a new bluetooth handsfree system has been incorporated that enables the driver to control their phones and the music system with ease. The car also carries an automatic climate control system in its long list of features.
The entire upholstery has undergone up-gradation and now come with the best in class seat fabrics. The door handles have been given a chrome finish that adds to the premium look of the car.
The exteriors of the car have also undergone some cosmetic changes as well. The car sheds its bubbly image and transforms itself into an urban and contemporary look. It now comes with a wider front grill with chrome inserts and also sports new and sportier angular headlamps at the front. At the back, the new micra come with LED tail lights. A rear view camera also dons the back of the car. The top variants of the car now come with a new set of alloy wheels that add to the sporty look of the car.
The car on its side has ORVM which adds to the comfort level of the driver. A follow me headlight feature proves very handy for those who often have to walk in dark after parking their car. The car also warns the driver for removing the key which is a very useful feature.
In terms of safety the Nissan engineers have really showed their mantle with the car having not only front driver and passenger airbags under the dashboard but the engineers have also managed to install a revolutionary airbags system on the front seats itself that protect the backs of the driver and the co-passenger. The car is also fitted with the latest safety measures like ABS (Anti Lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), BA, high mount stop lamps, speed sensing auto door lock, immobilizer with alarm, driver seatbelt warning system, door ajar warning and low fuel warning system.
Since its launch in India in 2010 Nissan Micra has become a very popular car in the premium hatchback segment giving its arch rivals a run for their money. The excellent interiors, exteriors and a great performance have enabled Micra to win many hearts. With an option of 8 variants Nissan Motors have made sure that there is something for everyone. Micra are available in 3 variants in Petrol and 5 variants in Diesel.
Nissan has sold more than 43,000 Micra’s in India since being launched three years ago. The company has now set a very ambitious target for itself with Nissan India President Kenichiro Yomura aiming to sell 2500 units of Micra every month which doesn’t seem to be hard keeping in mind the new features and the great looks of the new Micra.
Nissan Micra the premium hatch from Nissan was 3rd car from Nissan for car buyers in India. Whilst the Micra had the first mover advantage over its cousin from Renault; the Pulse, as it not only shares its platform but lots of body part including the Famous Renault K(K diesel engine. Whilst the Micra does look good and has a stand out value, it somehow did not caught fancy of Indian car buyers and delivered lower sales numbers.
Micra was the first premium hatchback to come with button operated engine start stop function, a features limited to premium sedan before Micra offered to its buyers in India. Micra also is known for its pliant drive and a responsive diesel power plant under its hood.
