Mitsubishi Pajero Sport AT 4x2 Features & Specifications, ARAI Mileage and Price

Mitsubishi-Hindustan Motors collaboration has brought out the automatic transmission version of the Pajero Sport 2.5L Diesel AT in India at a price of INR 23.55 lakhs (ex-Showroom, New Delhi). This variant will be available only in rear wheel drive cars. Manual transmission of the car was relaunched in India in 2012 and due to the growing demand for automatic transmission and to meet the competition in the segment; the car maker has brought out the Automatic variant of the same in November 2014. The bigger, stylish, robust and high performance SUV is the perfect choice for all the car lovers in India. The SUV will be pitted against the automatic SUVs like Hyundai Santa Fe, SsangYong Rexton, Chevrolet Captiva, Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner. The car is being assembled at the Mitsubishi-HM Chennai facility near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.  It also comes with a warranty of 3 years or 1 lakh kilometres whichever is earlier. However, the limited after sales network and small dealerships prove to be an Achilles heel for the customers.

Exteriors

The exteriors of the car have undergone slight changes which make it to look quite good. The car comes with aggressive front end, projector headlamps with chrome grille and a huge logo which dominates the front end. The side profile of the car is muscular which is typical of a SUV and also comes with high stance assisted by the ground clearance. At the rear, the Pajero comes with three quarter angle which gives it the best look and comes with slim tail lamps and minimal chrome running roof rails. The car also comes with chrome finished ORVM covered integrated indicators. Other than this, the car comes with 12 spoke alloy wheels, chrome door handles, front fog lamps, projector type halogen headlamp with manual levelling and chrome license plate garnish.

The SUV is 4695mm in length, 1815 mm in width and 1840mm in height with a wheel base of 2800mm as well as a turning radius of 5.6 m. The SUV comes with 5 doors and accommodates up to seven passengers comfortably.

As of now, the exteriors of the automatic variants are available only in lemon yellow with white and flame red with white.

Interiors

On the interiors, the SUV has also undergone certain changes as it was launched during the festive season. The new additions are 2-DIN multimedia system with integrated DVD player, navigation system, reverse parking display, cooled box placed in the boot, automatic climate control, etc.

Other than the above, the car comes MID, Front Auto air-conditioning and rear manual controls, Multi function MP3 CD, USB, AUX entertainment with six speakers and two tweeters, leather beige coloured seats, leather wrapped steering wheel with audio control, leather wrapped gear and shift transfer, multi-way power adjust driver seat, seat slide on front seats and seat recline in all three row seats. Similar to the manual variant, the steering wheel and cockpit comes with glove box and centre console. The major change in the AT is the leather treatment provided to the seats, gear knob and steering wheel. Wooden inserts are also available inside the car and the car has got switches illuminated in red colour which makes the console to look terrific at night. The utility features such as cup and bottle holders, cargo floor box, accessory socket, two coat hangers, cigarette lighter, front door pockets, sun glass pocket, etc are found on the interiors.

On the comfort front, the SUV is equipped with features like keyless entry, Dual auto A/c with rear air conditioner switch and ceiling vents in second and third rows, armrest on all doors with bottle holders, rear camera with display, power windows, blue tooth connectivity, etc.  The interiors are spacious enough to accommodate the passengers as well as their luggage. The SUV is also provided with a driver side front sun visor with ticket holder and a vanity mirror on passenger side.

The SUV is quite rich in its safety features and comes with anti-intrusion brake pedal, anti-locking braking system along with electronic brake force distribution, dual front airbags, collapsible steering column, electronic immobiliser and brake booster, front and rear door impact bars, central locking systems, crash detection door lock shut down, ABS with EBD, three point ELR seat belt for all, airbags for passengers, etc.

Engine, Transmission and Performance

However, the manufacturer has retained the 2.5 L  Di-Diesel with intercooler turbocharger four cylinder inline diesel engines that are found on the manual variant. The engine churns out power of 178 PS @ 4,000 rpm and a torque of 350 Nm @ 1800-3500 rpm. Though the power of the engine remains the same, the manufacturer has reduced the torque by 50 Nm. Omission of the 4WD makes it nearly 100 Kg less than the manual variant.  The engine is mated to the 5 speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and the AT variant will be available in rear wheel drive only. The engine displacement is 2477cc.  The valve train of the engine is also similar to that of manual variant which is 16 Valve DOHC that is integrated with common rail fuel injection system. The SUV comes with rack and pinion based steering, which makes the driving a pleasure.  Similar to the manual variant, the AT variant performs well. However, it is not suitable for off-road travels.

Ride and Handling

As seen earlier, the SUV is quite spacious and can accommodate passengers as well as their luggage. The kerb weight of the car is 1935 Kg. Due to AT, the car is easy to drive in city traffic especially in heavy or slow moving traffic. But on open road, just like its predecessor, makes driving a pleasure.  The SUV also comes with the wheels of the car well planted on the road which enables the car to have control around the bends. The ground clearance rate of the car is 215 mm and a turning radius of 5.6 m. The SUV is fitted with tubeless radial tyres of 265/65 R17 with alloy wheels. At the front, the car is provided with a 16” ventilated disc brakes and at the rear 11.6” drums with leading and trailing shoes. The car also comes with Double wishbone with coil spring suspension and three link coil spring suspension with stabiliser bar rear suspension system. This makes the SUV to provide the passenger with comfortable and convenient travel.

Fuel Economy

The Pajero comes with a fuel tank capacity of 70 litres and  the fuel economy is expected to be more than the manual variant as the power will be transmitted to the rear axle alone.  The current fuel economy of Pajero is 12.8 Kmpl and it gives around 10 Kmpl on congested or heavy traffic roads.   The performance, plush interiors, style and well built body of the SUV makes this fuel economy acceptable.

Verdict

Similar to the manual variant, the automatic variant of Pajero is also ideal for Indian roads and Indian customers who look for big. The customers also need not have to worry about the performance, drive quality, plush interiors, utility features, technology, etc that are available as per the Mitsubishi brand. Pajero Sport is also the award winner of BBC Top Gear in the year 2012. The major disadvantage being limited after sales service, small dealership networks, high price when compared to other SUVs. With the launch of the automatic transmission, the car maker hopes to increase the sales of the Pajero Sport in India
