A well engineered luxury sports utility vehicle, Mercedes M Class is now in its third generation. Along with the powerful 6 cylinder variant ML 350 CDI, the Stuttgart company has fabricated a model with a smaller engine and it costs approx Rs 10 lakhs less than its elder sibling. So the ML 250 CDI is a 2143 cc 4 cylinder version with the same 7 speed automatic gearbox. It churns out 203 bhp and is packed with 51 kgm of torque.
And here’s a report on its features:
Under the hood lies a smaller motor but the external styling of ML 250 CDI does not differ much from that of the 3 litre engine car. The large bonnet gives it a majestic form. On the three louver front grille sits the Mercedes star. A prominent sill on the front bumper adds to the athletic looks of the car. LED strips on the side air dams are bordered by chrome for extra finesse. The bi-xenon headlamps also have LED daytime running lights. An all wheel drive SUV, the ML 250 CDI runs on 255/55 R18 tyres. Roof rails have also been used for external styling. At the back it carries the same design as ML 350 CDI. Large, two colour tail lamps and LED strips on the bumper look smart. Obsidian Black, Palladium Silver and Polar White are the three colour choices for this SUV.
The two tone cabin of M Class has been exquisitely crafted. Its multi layered dashboard gets poplar wood trim and plastic panels – the quality as always, looks very refined. What may bother some owners is the small size of the COMAND screen. If the dimensions were tad larger, the user friendliness would have been great. Nevertheless, it comes with navigation and the integrated audio system consists of radio, CD changer, MP3 player. Ports for USB and Aux have also been provided on the centre console. Audio and cruise controls mount the four spoke steering wheel. Ambient lighting enhances the look and feel of interiors. The lighting on the instrument cluster changes as per the mode in which the vehicle is being driven.
Electrically adjustable driver’s seat of ML 250 CDI offers 4-way lumbar support and the steering wheel can be set for rake and reach – this helps the driver to get into a comfy driving position. There is a large armrest between the front seats for further support. At the rear too, the passengers can sit in ample comfort. Leg room on the side seats is adequate although an adult sitting in the middle might find it difficult to stretch legs due to the transmission tunnel and placing of rear AC vents. And again, in this trim too, there is no third row of seats. Climate control comes as standard with separate rear zone vents and switches. Powered ORVMs, adjustable headrests, rear defogger, parking sensors, rain sensing wipers and cruise control are some other comfort features in this sporty Mercedes.
The safety of M Class ML 250 CDI is optimised by anti lock braking system, brake assist, electronic stability program and acceleration skid control. It comes with 7 air bags as standard. Like in most other Mercedes cars, PRE-SAFE technology has also been used in this SUV. It has Intelligent Light System and ATTENTION ASSIST. Basic safety elements such as seat belt & door ajar reminders, child safety locks, central locking, engine immobilizer and anti theft alarm are parts of security set up.
The price tag for M Class ML 250 CDI trim is Rs 49.90 lakhs. Wonderful build quality spacious interiors and comfortable seats are the best features of this car. With regards to performance it is not very enthusiastic at quick direction changes but is pleasant to drive on smooth flowing roads.
