Mercedes Benz, the German car brand needs no introduction. The very name stands for refinement and luxury. And the Merc E Class sets the gold standard in its segment. This car is at the heart of the company’s production line-up. This car has helped Mercedes Benz to build its reputation as we know today!
The E originally implied Einspritzmotor (German term for fuel injection engine) - a new feature in volume production vehicles in the era when the E-Class first appeared. E was a suffix for the engine nomenclature in the 1950s. It was not until 1994 that the name `E-Class` became known and the German automaker switched over to a new naming convention. The first car to get this nomenclature was the facelifted W124 and it was therefore re-launched as the E220. The model was officially referred to as the E-Class (E-Klasse in German).
After selling more than 11 million cars worldwide and 23,000+ in India, Mercedes Benz brought the new E Class in summer of 2013. With a new design idiom, new engines and new systems, this Merc has been revised comprehensively to make the latest technical advantages practically available at an early stage.
Getting a curvier and more sharply designed front bumper, the new E Class looks aggressive. The single element headlamp cluster adds more style to the nose. And the ‘four eye’ concept is still used with the purposefully located LED strips inside individual lamps. A broad bonnet with its lines raking towards the two-louver front chrome grille accentuates the front look. And the three pointed star gives the E class its exclusive identity. The trapezoidal air ducts are larger on the new model.
There are two different tyre sizes for front & rear and they look great with classy five spoke alloys. The changed sheet metal has helped to get rid of the bulges around the rear wheel arch. At the rear, the rectangular tail lamps with LED inserts and a softly chiselled bumper make for a neat and uncluttered profile. Chrome lined dual tail pipes complete the elegant look. A feature line running from the rear door to the tail lamps gives the E Class a long and graceful stance.
The high grade materials and ergonomic designing create an aura of luxury inside the cabin. With comfortable, plush and supportive seats, it’s a pleasure for both driver and passengers to be in the E class sedan. Like its predecessors, the spaciousness of interiors is maintained in the new model, and the build quality, fit & finish is top notch as in every Merc. The three spoke steering wheel has a smart look & chunky grip, and the metres have white dials with nice backlight. There is a choice between variants with metallic garnish or brushwood finish across the dashboard. The COMAND system incorporates sat nav and DVD player. You can sync it with your mobile and other Bluetooth enabled devices. High clarity screen facilitates navigation. The gear lever is on the side of steering wheel and so there’s space for two cup holders on the central console.
On the safety side, along with the ESP, ASR, ABS and 8 airbags, the new E class has been equipped with full LED headlamps along with adaptive lighting. Pre-safe, Mercedes protection program that tightens the seat belts, erects the seating position, and closes windows and the sunroof when the vehicle’s several sensors are sure the car is going to crash, is also fitted in the E class. Indeed the E-Class bristles with an armoury of safety elements to keep its driver and other riders safe.
The 1991 cc, 4 cylinder petrol engine of E 200 Avantgarde is mated to 7 speed automatic gearbox has a power of 184 bhp and torque of 30.6 kgm. The diesel driven variants E 250 CDI – Avantgarde and Launch Edition are powered by 2143 cc 4 cylinder engine also coupled with 7 speed automatic transmission. This one has 204 bhp of power and 51 kgm of torque.
And the price range of these luxuries on wheels extends from Rs 41.50 lakhs to 49.90 lakhs (ex showroom price Delhi). Higher end E Class variants are priced between Rs 66.17 lakhs to 1.29 crore.
Awards and accolades won by the E class are aplenty. Readers of AUTOBILD Magazine voted for the new E-Class and E-Class Coupe as the best looking cars in the world – “Coupe and Cabriolet” category. The saloon was also chosen as the overall champion among all contending models. This BlueTEC Hybrid model of this iconic Merc was victorious in the Business Car Manager SME Company Car of the Year Awards 2012 where it received accolades in two categories including Best Overall Company Car for SMEs. More recently, the new generation E-Class was honoured with ‘Best Prestige Car Under $100,000’ award and it continues to establish the benchmark for innovation and safety in the large luxury cars category.
A perfect mix of old-world charm and new age technology, Mercedes Benz E-Class continues to be a leader with very pleasant personality in the luxury class segment.
