Mercedes gave the E Class a facelift in 2013 and the car also arrived in India with few subtle changes in its external looks. In both its petrol and diesel variants, the E Class has been one of the most popular luxury saloons and competes strongly with the BMWs and Audis.
Here’s an account of the updated E250 CDI Avantgarde variant that has 2143 cc 4-cylinder common-rail turbo diesel engine churning out 204 bhp at 4200 rpm and 50.9 kgm of torque at 1600-1800 rpm. It is mated to 7 speed automatic gearbox.
The refreshed E250 CDI has a changed nose as the new single element headlight cluster replaces the previous setup. There is a soft flow to the nose design and the split bumper looks sportier. Also, the front grille appears more powerful with its prominent slats and the large three pointed star in the middle. Mercedes uses 18 inch, five-spoke alloy wheels as standard for this variant. Furthermore, there is a sheet metal modification on the sides and the German car maker has done away with those somewhat retro pontoons about the rear wheel arches. For changes at the rear you get to see new tail lights with LED inserts. The car’s silhouette still looks as classy as always.
An ambience of luxury and refinement greets as you get into the cabin of the E250 CDI Avantgarde model. There are trapezoidal AC vents on the dashboard and silver trim has been used to highlight the area. An analogue clock sits between the centre vents. The COMAND screen is bigger and has a higher resolution. For music you have CD, MP3 player, Aux, USB ports and the infotainment system can sync with mobile devices. GPS navigation and Bluetooth connectivity is provided. The white dials are structured neatly on the instrument panel and each of them is individually shrouded. You also have the option of a panoramic sunroof. The general design of the layered dashboard as also the cabin ambience is same as in other E Class variants.
Seats have been well built and particularly the ones at the back offer good support to shoulders & thighs. Front seats can be electrically adjusted for height and lumbar support. Memory function for the driver’s seat makes it easy to record and restore the most comfortable position. Armrests in front and rear parts of cabin offer more comfort. Powered steering wheel is adjustable for rake and reach. Three-zone climate control with air quality control keeps the interiors pleasant irrespective of the mercury levels outside. For more comfort to the passengers at back seat, rear blinds can be drawn with the press of a button on the centre console. Parking sensors, parking camera, rear glass defogger and electrically adjustable ORVMs are some driver centric features. The E250 CDI Avantgarde also has rain sensing wipers and headlight washers.
The E250 CDI has the same set of standard safety features as in other E Class variants. It comes with 8 airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, ATTENTION ASSIST and PRE-SAFE. The Supplemental Restraint System automatically sets on a series of safety set ups when danger of a crash is detected. Anti lock braking system, brake assist, EBD, electronic stability program, and traction control make the car quite safe to drive and ride. Central locking, child safety locks, engine immobilizer and anti theft alarm are other safety attributes in the saloon.
A new E250 CDI Avantgarde comes at price of Rs 44.69 lakhs (ex showroom price Delhi). This car offers a cushy ride and has a fuel economy of 9.2 to 14.5 km/litre. Its performance and practicality for luxury sedan users is still commendable.
