Mercedes Benz’s four door coupe like saloon that was launched in 2004, created a new category of practical coupes in the luxury car segment. The CLS Class also received a facelift in 2011 though there is no new diesel version yet. As an attractively styled car, this Merc is also very nimble and knows how to maintain its high speed composure. Its 3.5 litre, V6 engine mated to 7 speed automatic transmission churns out 306 bhp and has 37 kgm of torque.
Here are some more details on the styling features and tech rich equipment package of CLS Class Blue Efficiency:
Unlike its predecessor that had elegance written all over its exteriors, the facelifted CLS Class has more of in-your-face and aggressive styling. Sharp edged headlamps with bright LED daytime running lights look striking on the face of this car. The upright two louver horizontal grille adds to the dynamism of front design. LED bands are also integrated with the front bumper cover. The broad hood concealing that massive 3498 cc petrol engine gives CLS characteristically regal profile. This athletic saloon has a width of 1854 mm and measures 4940 mm in length. So, yes it is a long car and its door panels are carved with crease lines for a bit of that edgy feel. The flared wheel arches take in 245/45 R17 tyres as standard. Door wing mirrors sport side turn indicators.
At the back, the deck now looks shorter and swoops downwards more dramatically. Those long, wrap around tail lamps retain their elegant design and draw attention with bright LED inserts. For the exhaust set-up it has rectangular, twin tipped outlets.
With more muscle on its body, lower roofline and lots of LEDs the facelifted version of second generation CLS Class gets more assertive looks and does have commanding road presence.
Stepping inside the CLS Class you will be impressed by the rich feel exuded by its well furnished cabin. Cockpit is ergonomically fabricated for the driver and the instrument console has its three white dials hooded in individual spherical cases. The three spoke, multi function steering wheel has a thick grip and the silver touch gives it a sporty air. Speedometer features MMI display unit for information on outside temperature, driving mode and Attention Assist warnings.
Wood wedges on the door sills give the cabin a classy feel. High gloss laurel wooden inlays also highlight the fascia of dashboard and the COMAND screen stands in its centre, behind the air con vents. The entertainment system comprises 6 CD changer, MP3 player and you do get ports for USB and Aux input devices. Navigation assist is provided as standard. Another feature is Bluetooth connectivity for mobile music streaming and handsfree telephony. A large centre console that segregates the driver and co-driver zones neatly has easy-to-use controls for the COMAND set-up.
The quality of leather, plastics and wooden materials used in the fabrication and ornamentation of CLS Blue Efficiency is refined and plush.
The leather upholstered seats of CLS Class Blue Efficiency in the front part of cabin are lounge like and feel very comfortable. Both are power adjustable for height and lumbar support. And the centre armrests on the transmission tunnel console provide more support. At the rear there is ample legroom and good thigh support on the seats. But the slope of the roofline creates insufficient headroom for tall people. The back support on these rear seats is not as comfortable as you would expect in a Merc and this part of the cabin is designed only for two occupants – it is separated by the extending centre console and an armrest. Furthermore, the ingress and exit for the rear cabin does not feel easy – again due to the slope of coupe roofline.
On a positive note again, the Mercedes CLS Class is loaded with comfort features. There’s two zone climate control, front & rear parking sensors with parking camera, electrically adjustable steering wheel, and an electric sunroof. The air cooled glove box and stowage space beneath the centre armrest let you keep your candies and small stuff. Map pockets on doors are deep enough for 1.5 litre bottles. The trunk of this coupe has 520 litres of volume. Practicality and comfort are clearly visible in the design of Mercedes CLS.
Continuing its all-inclusive safety strategy for vehicles, the German carmaker has loaded CLS Class BE with a series of safety attributes. Adaptive headlamps with LEDs improve the visibility in dark while LED tail lights and brake lights make the coupe easier to be seen by the vehicles behind. Anti lock braking, brake assist and adaptive brake with hold function are standard elements. Electronic stability program, ASR traction control, tyre pressure loss warning and brake pad wear indicator make the drive safer. Among tech rich safety features, the Attention Assist warns the driver when it detects signs of decreasing attention & increased tiredness.
There are nine airbags including windowbags, sidebags and pelvisbags for driver and front passenger. Rear sidebags for both sides are available as an option. NECK-PRO adjustable head restraints are provided for front seat occupants. All seatbelts have pretensioners and load limiters. The PRE SAFE system activates essential safety features when danger or loss of vehicle control is detected. Anti theft engine immobiliser comes with ELCODE locking system that has infra-red remote control in designer key with chrome inserts. It also has visual and acoustical acknowledgement of car's locking.
The CLS Class 350 BE costs a whopping Rs. 99.90 lakhs (ex showroom price Delhi). Embodying style, performance along with the practicality of four doors in a coupe, this facelifted Merc has a fuel economy range of 8.5 km/litre to 11.7 km/litre. If you are a driving enthusiast, know some good routes to enjoy top performance of CLS, and do not mind those high service charges, it is certainly an enjoyable buy.
