The oldest German luxury car brand in India, Mercedes has been a favourite of premium saloon buyers for decades. And a model that became best seller across the globe is the elegant C Class. It has seen several facelifts, makeovers and has reached the markets in a number of customised, exclusive versions. Available in C200, C220 and C250 CDI variants the diesel driven C Class is also appreciated for a decent fuel economy besides the conventional Merc qualities.
We bring out an account of the features in C220 CDI Avantgarde edition:
Stateliness reflects instantly in the design of C220 CDI Avantgarde and this is why it draws attention on road. Tightly fitting, stretched out bonnet has pronounced crease lines along its sides and these run down right up to the upper corners of the chrome grille. Horizontal louvers on this front grille have the Merc star sitting in between. The headlamps with a sharp leaf shaped arch give the C Class a sly yet captivating look. And strings of LED lights on the trapezoidal air intakes grant a stylish appeal and make the car more visible to oncoming traffic at night.
On the sides the flared wheel arches and groovy line on the bottom of door panels create a continual design pattern. Sixteen inch stylised alloy wheels are used as standard for the car. The ORVMs sport bands of LED side turn indicators. Chrome garnish and another three pointed star ornaments the trunk lid. Subtly stretching towards the sides, the tail lamps look neat and have LEDs. Single tipped diffuser with chrome finish also portrays the luxury factor of this saloon.
Furbished with refined materials and stylish design features, the cabin of C220 CDI Avantgarde is impressive and sporty at first glance. Brushed aluminium on the tips of buttons & knobs gives a smart look. Wooden inlays for centre console, dashboard and door trims adds to the elegance of design. The instrument console with three large dials also has digital clock and gives external temperature in clearly visible format. Furthermore, it offers information for average speed, gear mode selection, average fuel consumption and distance to empty.
The coloured COMAND screen above the central AC vents has a sat-nav system. It displays entertainment options menu, Bluetooth telephony details and driving modes. There is a cluster of buttons to operate the set up and this can be confusing for a new user. The music system has CD changer/player, MP3 player and a radio. It is compatible with Aux in devices. Standard design elements in the cabin are common with those in other C Class variants. As an entry level Merc luxury car, C 220 CDI pleases its driver and passengers with its charming design and luxurious feel.
This C Class trim brings a compact pack of luxury for its owners. With a little bit of all luxury features expected in a premium luxury saloon, it is a nice value proposition. There is a two zone climate control with air quality control. The two seats in front are power adjustable for height and lumbar support. Tilt and telescopic setting can be changed manually for the multi function steering wheel. The ORVMs are power adaptable and have auto dimming feature. Features that make drive comfortable include parking sensors, cruise control, foot operated parking brake and hill start assist. Heated windscreen with washer nozzle and the defogger on rear glass aids in visibility.
Leg room and shoulder room on all seats is good and the comfort increases with the use of broad armrests. A centre armrest for driver and front passenger is provided in the front and a foldable centre armrest is provided on the rear seat. Both of these also have space for storage. A voluminous glove box, cup holders and door pockets make more space for storage of knick knacks. The boot of this sedan has 475 litres of volume.
Aesthetic cabin illumination with lighting of different areas in the cabin exudes a plush feel.
C220 CDI Avantgarde shares its set of safety equipment with other C Class variants in the Mercedes fleet. So there are six air bags that subsume side airbags for rear seat occupants. Side and front impact protection beams are also provided. NECK PRO head restraints reduce the risk of a whiplash injury in case of a collision. The Pre Safe feature activates essential safety features if danger of crash is detected.
Adaptive Highbeam Assist is devised for optimal low-beam headlamp range. This makes it feasible to see pedestrians, stray animals or road obstructions quicker than with usual low-beam headlamps. Anti lock braking, brake assist, electronic stability program and traction control are standard attributes.
Attention Assist function is an advanced feature particularly helpful for long or tiring trips. It warns the driver whenever it reads signs of sleepiness or decreasing attention. There is a range of basic safety features such as child safety locks, seat belt pretensioners & load limiters, seat belt reminder, remote central locking, anti theft alarm and engine immobilizer.
The price tag on this Avantgarde edition of C220 CDI is Rs 34.81 lakhs (ex showroom price Delhi). A competitive car with pleasing driving feel, it looks like the C Class saloon will continue to attract buyers despite increasing competition.
