The most affordable Mercedes Benz at present, A Class comes in the popular hatch avatar and targets driving enthusiasts instead of the chauffeur driven luxury car buyers. You can have this car in either petrol or diesel avatar. Solid build, comfortable cabin, admirable ride quality and impressive looks make the A Class a competent player in the new luxury hatchback segment.
Here is an account of the features used in the A180 Sport that is powered by 1595 cc 4 cylinder petrol engine mated to 7 speed automatic gearbox:
The youthful, fresh design of A180 Sport is strikingly different from those swanky Merc saloons. It is tightly skinned with a curvy design and has a transversely placed engine beneath its sleek hood. The front grille has 302 diamond shaped aluminium fragments arranged rhythmically and the three pointed star in between. The headlamps look flared and there are prominent cuts and slashes along the side of the hatch. This A Class variant runs on 225/45 R17 tyres. With a coupe-like side line and curvy roof, the beltline rises towards the rear and long, narrow, glass area highlights the sporty stance of this A Class trim. The B-pillar of A180 Sport is sheltered by the "frame under glass" design of the door. At the rear there are wrap around bi colour tail lamps and with a large body coloured bumper the car looks sporty and muscular.
The cabin of Merc A Class A180 Sport has a sporty feel with ergonomic styling and layout. There are several rich textures on the dashboard and these include slick black plastic, soft touch leather and brushed leather aluminium finish. The black instrument cluster has white dials that are clearly readable. It keeps you informed about average speed, average fuel consumption, distance to empty and also has a digital clock. There is the COMAND screen display for integrated music system and GPS navigation system. And the music system plays CDs, MP3 files and is compatible with USB and Aux in devices. With small windows and tight headroom, tall passengers may find the rear a little cramped but the seats are sufficiently comfortable as per hatchback standards. Buyers should realise that this will not be that conventionally chauffeur driven Merc – it is essentially a driver centric car and its ergonomics do make it interesting to drive.
The upholstered sport seats in front can be electrically adjusted for height and the driver’s seat has memory control that aids in automatically setting the seat to last used comfortable position. There’s climate control for keeping the cabin comfortably cooled and heated. Separate air con vents have been provided at the rear. Thanks to Bluetooth connectivity and steering wheel mounted controls, you can receive and make important mobile calls conveniently while driving. A parking camera is missing in this hatchback but front and rear parking sensors have been fitted. The ORVMs are electrically adjustable, the rear glass has a defogger, washer & wiper, and the boot lid is remote operated. Pockets have been sculpted on front doors to store little things.
This luxury hatch sporty variant gets 7 airbags including side ones for driver and front passenger. Side and front impact beams offer good protection in case of a sudden collision. It has anti lock braking system and brake assist. Tyre pressure monitoring and vehicle stability control system also optimise the safety of this Merc hatch. There are warning indicators for seat belt and open or improperly closed door. Anti theft feature engine immobilizer has also been used in the car.
Mercedes Benz A180 Sport costs Rs 24.09 lakhs (ex showroom price Delhi). A beautifully built car, this luxury hatch is for those who’ve always dreamt of an affordable version of the German luxury and love to drive.
