Maruti currently offers only one car in the MPV segment - Ertiga. Although with it only they have managed to sell more than what Tata and Mahindra have been trying for a long time now. Maruti Suzuki will be developing a seven seater vehicle for even lesser price than Ertiga. They will base their car on Wagon R and will be launched in the late 2016 or early 207 alongside the third generation of Wagon R.
Maruti Suzuki is playing smart and might keep the car’s length under 4 meters to price the car aggressively as they would receive excise duty benefits. Keeping Wagon R’s design in mind it shouldn’t be much difficult to incorporate another row for more seating. With a little cosmetic touch – ups and of course the increased length Marut might not bring any major changes to the overall look of the car. So that they can make sure people know it has been derived from Wagon R. A concept MPV variant of Wagon R was seen in International Indonesia Motor Show in 2013, so we can assume that Maruti Suzuki might incorporate some of its features in the car.
Wagon R’s interiors are, as you all might know, are fairly decent. So we can expect the same from the MPV but a little modification like 2nd row a/c vents and maybe an info – navi system. With the addition of a new row, the practicality of the car will increase and with that the sell figures might as well. There might be enough headroom and legroom for the people in the car because of the tall boy design of Wagon R.
Wagon R comes only in Petrol but with the advent of MPV they might offer something in diesel. The engine from Celerio or Swift seems the more likely option. In petrol they might continue with the same 3 cylinder litre K10B series engine which produces a maximum power of 67bhp and 90 Nm of peak torque.
If they are planning to launch Ertiga is price segment below that of Ertiga. It’s safe to say competition will reach its peak. Firstly, since Wagon R is Maruti Suzuki’s most successful car it can be thought that any of its variations would sell (Although, Stingray did sell as much). Secondly, Maruti Suzuki’s brand name is enough for trust purpose and lastly, the practical aspect and the price of the car. Wagon R MPV will definitely rival Datsun Go Plus as it’s the only MPV in a price segment lower than Ertiga. Also, it may rival upcoming Mahindra Quanto. Wagon R MPV would make a great alternative for Honda Mobilio, Hyundai i20 Active and Toyota Innova because of its low price. Its price will range between 3 to 6 lakhs (ex – showroom, New Delhi).
