Grand Viatara is an SUV developed by Japanese auto maker Suzuki. It was first launched as the Escudo in Japan in 1988 as a three-door part-time four wheel drive. In India the car was launched in the year 2007 while it was in its 3rd generation. The car comes with different names in different countries; In North America the car is known as Sidekick, in maximum part of Western Europe, Bolivia, Philippines, Hong Kong and few other countries it is known as Vitara while in the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe, few parts of South Asia the vehicle is known as Grand Vitara.
Since its launch the vehicle has won many awards and accolades around the world which includes 6 awards in the U.S.A, 4 in Germany, 5 in Russia and 3 in Australia from some of the most reputed agencies. The NDTV Profit Car & Bike Awards 2008 bestowed it with the ‘SUV of the Year’ award. The awards clearly prove its looks and performance but to the utter dismay of Maruti, the sales figure for this SUV never took up and has been quite low in India.
When it comes to interior, the design of the Grand Vitara reflects a different persona. The dashboard is equipped with Multi-Information Display, a brand new 6 CD changer, with Audio AUX terminal and a centre speaker. The sliding centre armrest, new digital A/C controls and illuminated steering audio control switches increases convenience. The redesigned powertrain and new acoustic materials makes the cabin quieter. The inside also has driver’s seat belt warning indicator, Light-off key reminder, 3-spoke urethane and tilt steering wheel, steering lock, and key cylinder with illuminated ring, remote fuel lid opener and silver interior garnishes.
The multi-information display has 9 displays on it namely low fuel warning display, vehicle speed average display, instantaneous fuel mileage display, average fuel consumption display, odometer display, cruising range display, gear position display (for automatic transmission), outside transmission display and door ajar warning display.
The inside cabin of Grand Vitara has a series of lights like front map light, 3 position centre room light, 3 position rear room light and 2 position luggage area light. The exterior of the Grand Vitara looks quite distinguishing. The front view of the SUV looks very muscular and bigger. The multi-reflector halogen projector headlamps and the grille impart aggression to it. The windscreen is smaller and comes with high/low 2-speed variable intermittent and washer. The vehicle has a body coloured rear view mirrors (ORVMs) that can be adjusted electronically as per the convenience. From the side, it has a body coloured door handles, tinted windows and large side skirts with bold lines. The aggressive look of the front has been carried to the rear as well. The rear has got a well designed set of tail lamps, rear fog lamps, a spare tyre, high mounted stop lamp, body coloured bumper, body coloured tailgate handle, a speed intermittent wiper & washer and a window demister.
The Grand Vitara comes loaded with a 4 Cylinder, 16 Valve, 2.4 L DOHC, VVT petrol engine. It promises to deliver a maximum power of 163.5 BHP @6000 rpm and maximum torque of 225 NM @4000 rpm. It has a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission. The company has also integrated it with Variable Induction System (VIS) that improves the engine performance. The vehicle has four different modes for driving at different conditions and terrains namely normal driving, medium off roading, if the vehicle is in mud sand and snow and the towing mode.
