Ertiga changed the paradigm in the Indian car market. Indian car buyers skew towards a compact UV over a sedan can be directly attributed to Ertiga. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is a seven seater Mini MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) car developed by Japanese automaker Suzuki and its Indian subsidiary Maruti Suzuki. In China the car is being developed by Changan Suzuki. It was launched in India on 12th April 2012. The company claims Ertiga to be the first Life Utility vehicle (LUV).
Just after the launch, Ertiga created a flutter in the industry with 15000 bookings in just 10 days. Standing true to the expectations of Maruti, the car has won several accolades and awards like the TopGear Magazine awards 2012 awarded it the “Family car of the Year”, NDTV Car & Bike awards 2013 awarded it the “MUV of the year”, HDFC’s Bloomberg TV Autocar Awards 2013 gave it the “MPVof the Year” award and several more to count.
The launch of the LUV Ertiga has created a completely different segment of its own and has no direct competitors. The only rival that comes to mind is the senior SUVs Toyota Innova and the Duster. However, in terms of pricing Ertiga is much lower than them.
The first thing in the interiors that Maruti can pride itself is the seating capacity of the car. The light weight materials used in the interiors gives it quite a luxurious look. The seats have high-quality textured, premium upholstery. The contrasting brown and beige colour dashboard is fitted with features like AC, 2-din audio system with support of CD player and USB and looks quite stylish. The AC vents mounted on the roof is good enough to cool the second and the third row. The two meters and the multi information display on the instrument cluster enhance the entire look of the front. The chrome door handles gives an added touch to the persona of the interiors. The car also has features like 3 spoke, adjustable steering, keyless entry, multi information display, power windows and electrically adjustable ORVMs, outside temperature display and cup holders. The rear seat can be folded completely and the space can be used for extra luggage.
In terms of safety, the car is equipped with SRS (Supplementary Restraint System) dual front seat airbags that will help cushion the impact and reduce the chance of injury. The car is also equipped with 3-point ELR seat-belt for the driver and the co-passenger on the front row. The 2nd row seat is fitted with a 2-point lap belt. The seat belts on the front seats are fitted with pretensioners and force limiters. The use of higher tensile steel for strategic sections of the body structure and carefully positioned reinforcements provides excellent rigidity and strength. In addition, the ABS (Antilock Brake System) prevents the wheels from locking up during sudden braking. The ABS further helps EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) to optimize distribution of braking force on the front and rear wheels in response to vehicle load and driving conditions to improve the braking performance.
The exterior of Ertiga seems to be somewhat inspired with the Ritz hatchback, especially when it comes to the front styling. The front grille and the bonnet seem to have come from there. The radiator grille sports the Suzuki emblem. The headlights are also a copy of swift with a balloon type appearance and sweeping side ward. There is an inbuilt fog-lamp for the ease of driving in tough conditions. The alloy wheels and the decent lines running around on both the sides impart a sport look to the car. The aerodynamic style designing reduces the wind noise and improves fuel efficiency. There is also a side view mirror with integrated indicators to augment safety. In the rear, the car has a turn indicator for extra safety, a rear wiper and a washer system with defogger and a sporty roof spoiler.
The Maruti Ertiga comes in both the diesel and petrol variants. The petrol variant has a 1.4 L advanced new K14 VVT (Variable Valve Timing Technology) engine which is light in weight and thus helps in improved fuel efficiency where as the diesel variant has 1.3 L DDiS engine that generates high power and excellent torque.
The petrol variant delivers a maximum power of 95PS @6000 rpm and the diesel engine delivers a maximum power of 90PS @4000 rpm. Both the variants follow BSIV OBD-2 emission norms. In terms of efficiency the Petrol variant promises to deliver 16.2 kmpl where as the diesel variant promises to deliver 20.77 kmpl.
