Maruti Suzuki Baleno Sigma MT Diesel Features & Specifications, ARAI Mileage and Price

A decade ago, Maruti had a vehicle named Baleno as one of its products. The car was offered as a sedan as well as a station wagon. It was a spiritual successor to the Esteem. But it did not sell well, in either form. Today, Maruti revived the branding with the brand new Baleno. Though it might not make much sense to name a new car-which is internationally known as the YRA- the same as a failed earlier car, Maruti has gone ahead with it. The car itself is pivotal to Maruti’s plan to reinvent itself as a maker of not only budget cars, but also upmarket models. The car will be offered from Maruti’s premium Nexa showrooms, which promise a luxurious experience. That car itself has been positioned between the Swift Dzire and Suzuki Swift hatchback. Other than that, the competition comprises of the Honda Jazz, the i20, Volkswagen Polo among others. By launching the Baleno at Rs 4.99 lakhs, Maruti has taken everyone by surprise but it remains to be seen if it has skimped on something important to retain that attractive price tag in the face of immense competition. The discussed model costs Rs. 6.16 Lakhs (ex – showroom price, New Delhi).

Specifications

The Baleno is powered by a 1248cc diesel engine that has four inline cylinders and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. It can produce a maximum of 74bhp @4000rpm and  a maximum torque of 190Nm@2000rpm. The front wheel drive car has been claimed to have a mileage of 27.39kmpl. The diesel engine is very sporty. It is the same engine as that in the Swift but with lesser power. Other than that, they perform essentially the same. The car feels mature to drive, with a taut steering and grounded feel. Cornering is fun and so is speeding down the highway. The suspension has it never runs out of breath and the turbo works great at higher revs, and you can feel it at higher speeds. On city roads, the car chugs along happily but to really feel the car the highway is the only way.

Exteriors & Interiors

The Baleno’s exterior embodies a new design called LiquidFlow design. The design sounds stylish, but is practical, to say the least. The sides of the car look like they flow from the front to the back. The front grille and bonnet and headlamps resemble the Swift family- big and practical. The Baleno is big, and the ample size works in its favour. The car has a chrome accent running along the width of the rear and the rear window is behind the rear doors shut line. The Sigma variant gets 16 inch steel rimmed wheels.

The interiors of the Baleno are very roomy despite being the smallest in terms of wheelbase amongst the competition. But the interiors pack enough space to accommodate five people easily the interiors have a black tone and make the car look sporty. The Sigma variant gets fabric upholstery for the seats. The instrument cluster is analog and the Sigma variant soes not get any Infotainment solution (higher variants get Apple CarPlay).

Safety

The Sigma variant, despite being the base variant, gets a host of safety features, like Anti Lock Braking System and Electronic Brake Distribution System, Brake Assist and Engine Immobiliser. The Baleno also gets two airbags for the driver and co – driver.
