Mahindra and Mahindra Ssangyong Tivoli Upcoming Car
Ssangyong is not a well known name. Even in the country of origin of the carmaker-South Korea- the carmaker is not very popular. Ssangyong has been known for its SUVs and MPVs. Their design is hardly original, though. Most of their vehicles bear resemblance to two or three generations older Mercedes designs. A stark one at that, too . But it is nothing that they can be solely faulted for. However, Mahindra bought a stake in Ssangyong in 2012 and launched the company in India with the Rexton, a SUV. The Rexton did fairly well in the Indian market. And Mahindra decided it was enough to launch another vehicle under the brand in India. And it has decided to launch a compact crossover vehicle, the Tivoli. The car will squarely take aim at the Hyundai Creta, the Ford EcoSport and the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross. The expected price of the Tivoli, taking into account the other markets, will be a bit higher and Mahindra/Ssangyong might go for a more aggressive approach in India as far as pricing is concerned.
The Tivoli looks good in design. It certainly takes design cues from other cars around. The front bumper has large, rectangular headlights sweeping towards the sides. The bumper itself has a single horizontal slat in the front grille with the Ssangyong logo in the centre and another slat below the line running under the grille. The front certainly looks inspired from Range Rover designs, especially the Evoque. The 15 inch alloy wheels and smooth sides make the car look good. The arch on the sides where the rear door ends and the rear lights begin are a signature Hyundai design, seen prominently on the Ssanta Fe and Creta. The rear end is even more interesting. It has small oval rear lamps and a bare rear with a roof that slopes downwards. The back might trick you into thinking it is a Mini Countryman. It would be fun to see if it gets the Countryman’s unique green shade option. The interiors are a more standard affair. There is fabric upholstery and it looks like there might be enough space for five. There is an optional touch screen infotainment system and all the standard connectivity suites. The steering and some other places get leather for a premium feel. The car will come in a standard black interior.
The car will come with a 1.6 litre diesel or a 1.6 litre petrol engine that can be mated to a five speed manual transmission or a six speed auto transmission. Only the details of the petrol configuration are known at this point. It will produce a power of 126 bhp@6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 167Nm@4600rpm,with an expected mileage of 13.9 kmpl.
