Mahindra and Mahindra Marazzo

Mahindra and Mahindra Marazzo available in 7 variants

As the festive season draws nearer, the new launches in the market have started creating an excitement and competition. The most recent offering from Mahindra & Mahindra is the Marazzo – a diesel powered MPV with 8 and 7 seat combinations. It has been launched in four variants.

This is Mahindra’s attempt to get into a sector that is already dominated by the Toyota Innova Crysta at the upper end and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga at the lower.

The 1.5 litre diesel engine in Marazzo generates 121 bhp at 3500 rpm and has a peak torque of 300 Nm at 1750 – 2500 rpm. It is mated to 6 speed manual transmission and there is no automatic option for now.

With a front wheel architecture, the Marazzo has body on frame and monocoque chassis (more on this later). It has a length of 4585 mm and the height measures 1774 mm. The MPV’s width is 1866 mm and the wheelbase is 2760 mm. Fuel tank capacity is 45 litres.
When you look at the stylish design of the Marazzo, it is clear that Mahindra is heading in a new direction for the models that it will now launch. This car has a shark-like exterior and the well-rounded design will attract a second look from many. The body looks well proportioned and is more attractive than the UVs that the company has been devising in forms of XUV 500, TUV 300 and KUV 100.

When you see it from the front, it seems to lack the grand feel that Innova exudes and that’s because of a shorter hood and grille. Nevertheless, the combination of 7-slat grille flanked by twin-pod projector headlights looks nice on the whole. There are touches such as chrome on the grille slats, faux LED strips on the headlamps and the creases on the bonnet edges. The air dam on the bumper has chrome touch at its bottom. The fog lamps have integrated daytime running lights. What we can confidently say is that the Marazzo is a new approach to design when we compare it to Mahindra’s other models.
The profile look is also attractive. Some interesting bits are the cuts above the wheel arches and the C shaped character line covering the doors. The roofline has a soft slope towards the rear. Mahindra Marazzo has front quarter glass and the B – C pillars are blacked out. Further back, the D pillar is semi-covered with black trim.

While the lower trims have 16 inch wheels to ride on, the top variant M8 has 17 incher alloys.

At its rear, the Marazzo has a chrome belt running below the windscreen and this also highlights the width of the MPV. The triangular tail lamps slightly wrap around the body. They also have chrome trim in boomerang shape. They are conspicuous but rather extra-large.

The elements that particularly make Marazzo’s design special are the floating roof, neatly synced windows, and the rising window line. On the other hand, some people may feel that the window line rises rather sharply as it moves to the rear and that makes the rear flanks appear heavy while making the wheels look small.

On the whole though it does seem to an upmarket family car more than a commercial people mover.

And if the styling does not impress you much, the mechanicals will surely look more interesting. Mahindra Marazzo gets a hybrid chassis that is actually a combination of ladder frame and monocoque. The company claims this is first of its kind and they have filed a patent for it.

The MPV has double wishbone suspension for front and twist beam at the rear – these are mounted to the ladder frame for optimised wheel location. There are compact cross sections on the ladder frame and it is integrated with the body cover for more rigidity without increasing the step up height of Marazzo.

Mahindra opted for this rather complicated chassis design to get the packaging effectiveness of a monocoque and the strong durability of body-on-frame ladder set up that is required on Indian roads.

Marazzo has a dual-tone cabin with piano black, pearl white and chrome inlays. There are 7 and 8 seat layouts and the seats feel comfortable. The last row has restricted space as in most other MUVs and on long drives it is suitable just for children. Roof mounted AC vents help in keeping the interior sufficiently cool.

The 7 inch touchscreen based infotainment system on the dual-tone dashboard features Bluetooth, USB and iPod connectivity. It does not have Apple CarPlay but does bring Android Auto. The Mahindra Blue Sense app has been provided with Emergency Call, SMS readouts and voice commands systems. There’s an integrated navigation device in the instrument cluster and it has Turn-by-turn navigation indicator.

Mahindra Marazzo gets 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel. Other elements include automatic climate control, powered outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) with integrated indicator blinkers, cooled glove box, sunglass holder, service reminder and follow-me-home headlamps.

A one touch tumble down feature has been offered on the door of the left-hand side seat in the 2nd row. The passengers of this second-row also have sunshades.

For standard safety feature package applicable to all variants, the Mahindra Marazzo comes with dual front air bags, ABS, impact sensing door locks, ISOFIX child safety seat anchors and disc brakes on all wheels. The higher end trims M6 and M8 also have cornering lamps and rear parking sensors.

There are six colour choices with the Marazzo - Shimmering Silver, Poseidon Purple, Aqua Marine, Mariner Maroon, Iceberg White, and Oceanic Black.

The 7 seater M2 (base) variant is priced at Rs 9.99 lakh and the 8 seater M2 has a price tag of 10.04 lakh. The 7 seater and 8 seater M4 are priced at Rs 10.95 lakh and 11.00 lakh respectively. The 7 seater M6 costs Rs 12.40 lakh and its 8 seater comes at 12.45 lakh.

The top end M8 ( only 7 seater) is priced at Rs. 13.90 lakh. (all prices ex-showroom Delhi).
