Hyundai Motors India Limited (HMIL) has launched updated version of its executive sedan, the Elantra in India at starting price of Rs 14.13 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Externally new Elantra features resigned front and rear though changes at rear are far more perceptible than at up front. Hyundai has steered clear from radically changing design as Elantra design is already recognized as a stylish demeanor. That said, inside the cabin, Hyundai has used its imagination handsomely to carve out even more desirable interiors. Black-beige color scheme of older model is now replaced with all-black theme that cues towards more luxury and majesty. Another important addition is new colored touchscreen panel which was monochromatic in previous generation Elantra. Mechanically Elantra continues to use 1.8-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines as both these power mills are quite capable and responsive. Diesel mill in new Elantra comes with ARAI certified mileage of 22.7 km/l; making it quite an economical proposition to drive. Both petrol and diesel engine comes mated with both 6-speed manual and automatic transmission. In sum, 2015 Elantra comes in 7 variants with 3 relating to petrol and 4 contributing to diesel model.
Elantra is a compact sedan produced by leading South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai. The car was first launched in the year 1990. In several countries the car is also marketed as Hyundai Avante and Lantra.
Since its launch the car has undergone several generational changes: 1st generation came in 1990, 2nd generation in 1996, 3rd generation in 2000, 4th generation in 2006 and the 5the generation came in 2010 which continues till date. In India the car was launched in 2012 as Neo Fluidic Elantra while it was in its 5th generation.
The Hyundai Neo Fluidic Elantra has several awards in its kitty like ‘Saloon Car of the year 2012’ by BBC Top Gear Magazine Awards 2012, ‘Car of the Year Award 2013’, ‘Executive Car of the Year’ and ‘Design of the Year (Car/Bike) ’ by Car India and Bike India Awards 2013 to name few. The car is competing with the likes of Chevrolet Cruze, Renault Fluence, Skoda Laura, Volkswagen Jetta and Corolla Altis.
The Hyundai Neo Fluidic Elantra comes with 2 different engine options namely 1.6 L Diesel CRDi VGT (6 Speed Manual/Automatic) and 1.8 L Petrol Dual VTVT (6 Speed Manual/Automatic). The 1.6 L DOHC CRDi VGT with 6 speed manual/automatic transmission has 4 cylinders and 16 valves. The engine has a displacement of 1582 cc and can churn out maximum power of 128 PS @4000 rpm and maximum torque of 26.5 kg.m @ 1900-2750. The 1.8 L DOHC Dual VTVT 6 speed manual/automatic also comes with 4 cylinders & 16 valves and has a displacement of 1797. The engine can deliver maximum power of 149 PS @6500 rpm and maximum torque of 18.1 kg.m @4700 rpm. The 1.6 L engine has an ARAI certified mileage of 22.7 kmpl while the 1.8 L engine has an ARAI certified mileage of 16.3 kmpl.
The ‘fluidic sculpture’ design theme based Elantra has a curvy, sporty and an elegant look in the exterior. The front chrome grille reflects about the vehicle being inspired by its fluidic design philosophy. The multi focus reflector headlamp with sweptback design imparts an aggressive look to the car. From the side, the Neo Fluidic Elantra has aerodynamically sculpted rear view mirrors with side repeater. The chrome door handles and the 16” alloy wheels catch attention immediately while the flowing character lines impart an enhanced style to the vehicle. Moving on to the rear, the vehicle has a sporty trunk lid that increases the cars aerodynamic efficiency and lends it a coupe-like appearance. The rear also sports a nicely designed combination lamps for high visibility.
The Hyundai Neo Fluidic Elantra has an overall length of 4530 mm, width is 1775 mm and height is 1470 mm.
Step inside and you will get a superbly designed and comfortable interior. The interior has a dual tone beige and black colour. The car has leather seats. The front seats have ventilation feature in which the air circulates throughout the seat and removes moisture, thereby reducing driving fatigue. The driver’s seat is a 10 way power adjustable providing ultimate comfort during driving. The centre console looks good and houses a 2-din CD/radio stereo system with USB, Aux-in and iPhone cable and Bluetooth. The dashboard also houses AC vents and a big glove box. The motor driven power steering wheel can be adjusted in 4 different directions and has mounted auto cruise control switch, cruise control system and an audio control switch. Other features of the car include supervision cluster, button start, power windows, front armrest, special sensors that detect keys presence facilitating remote locking and unlocking, electrically heated outside mirrors, rear ac vents, alternator management system (AMS), solar glass for windshield & doors, cluster ionizer, rear seat armrest with storage box, audio controls & power outlet, etc.
In terms of safety the Hyundai Neo Fluidic Elantra is well equipped with several features; the vehicle has got an ultra tensile strength steel that provides a first line of defense. The Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) along with the Electronic Stability program (ESP) and Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) avoids loss of control caused by sudden braking or rapid accelerating under asymmetric (wet/dry) road surface conditions. The whole system operates automatically. Other safety features of the car include 6 airbags, rear parking sensors, anti lock braking system (ABS) with electronic braking force distribution (EBD), rear parking camera, automatic headlight control, speed sensing auto door lock, impact sensing door unlock, solar glass, hill start assist control, clutch lock, rear defogger with timer and safety escort lamps.
