Hyundai Creta

Hyundai Creta available in 14 variants

21 July 2015 Hyundai has launched Creta compact SUV in India in the price range of Rs8.59-13.57 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Creta has been on offer with total of three engine options: 1.6-litre petrol, 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre diesel. All the engine choices are mated with 6-speed manual transmission though only top of the line 1.6-litre diesel got the convenience of automatic transmission.  As expected, there is no AWD version available for now though at later point in time, Hyundai can include both AWD and automatic petrol to model list of Creta. Fuel efficiency of Creta is quite high and 1.4-litre diesel returns the 21.38 km/l of ARAI certified mileage. 1.6-litre diesel on the other hand gives mileage of 19.67 km/l and 17.01 km/l in manual and automatic version respectively.  Creta is available in 6 trims with Base as starting model and SX (O) as top trim. Creta is feature-rich car as there is loads of equipment that this SUV comes with. Top of the line SX (O) trim is loaded with all bells and whistles though it fares not too well on value for money.

The success of Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport exemplified the potential of monocoque SUVs in the Indian market. It is surprising to see that the leading carmakers of India – Maruti and Hyundai entered the market rather late. Meanwhile, there were several hatchbacks that came as superficial SUVs. They had plastic claddings, raised stance and augmented suspension. These me-too products that included likes of Volkswagen Cross Polo, Toyota Etios Cross, Hyundai i20 Active and Fiat Avventura could achieve only average sales.

To get a real share in this segment of the market, Hyundai now brought a more bespoke SUV – it originates from the i25 that sells in China. For India, the company baptised it Creta. Production will be based in India and Creta will be exported to other markets from here. Its competitors are the EcoSport which is smaller in comparison; the Duster which is dated by now; and also the XUV500 that is bigger, has a more powerful engine and good equipment levels.

Another strong point of the monocoque Creta is that it offers a choice between three engine options:
•    1.4 litre diesel: 90 bhp at 4000 rpm and 220 Nm torque at 1500-2750 rpm
•    1.6 litre diesel: 126 bhp at 4000 rpm and 260 Nm torque at 1900 -2750 rpm
•    1.6 litre petrol: 121 bhp at 6400 rpm and 151 Nm torque at 4850 rpm

The smaller diesel engine has been placed in only the first three variants and is mated to 6 speed manual gearbox.

The 1.6 litre diesel powers the upper three variants. It is coupled with 6 speed manual as also a 6 speed automatic gearbox and the latter will be key advantage for Hyundai.  Among SUVs priced less than Rs 25 lakhs, only Mahindra Scorpio has automatic transmission (AT) with diesel and the Scorpio is a body on frame vehicle. The AT that Ford EcoSport offers comes only with its petrol model.

For the petrol model too, there are options of 6 speed manual and automatic transmission.
Hyundai Creta is not a sub-4 metre SUV and its length measures 4270 mm. It has a width of 1780 mm and height of 1630 mm. The wheelbase of 2590 mm is only 83 mm shorter than Duster’s. Creta can be a good alternative to some C+ segment sedans.

For its design the Creta carries on Hyundai’s fluidic design principle. It gets a triple slat grille as seen on the Santa Fe. The headlight cluster consists of projectors, LED positioning lamps and static bending lights. These headlamps offer good illumination in both low and high beams. Bonnet is flat and large.

Creta looks contemporary in profile view. The glossy black A pillars and the black cladding on the bottom add oodles of style for this SUV even on a humble body colour white. The outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) have integrated blinkers but these mirrors do not fold in and out automatically when you lock and unlock the car. Hyundai does provide this feature even in the i20 but not in his premium SUV. Even the request sensor on the (chrome) door handle is given only for the driver’s door while i20 gets it on both the front doors.

The top end variant has 17 inch wheels with 215/60 tyres and the lesser versions have 16 inchers with 205/65 rubber.

On the rear, the design is minimalistic but there is a chrome strip above the number plate and this looks like a forced accessory to please the masses. Tail lamps slightly bulge out of the bodyline and their entire cluster is functional. Spoiler is well integrated to the rear windscreen.

The quality of fit and finish is typically Hyundai and body panels are tightly aligned. The company has also emphasized upon the safety level with the ultra-high tensile steel body of Creta. Its pillars, side frames and bottom are adjusted in a ring-like layout and are all linked – according to Hyundai this structure improves the body stiffness significantly. All variants of this SUV get ABS as standard and the top trim has 6 airbags, traction control, ESP and hill-start assist.

The front door can be unlocked by pressing the request sensor when the smart key is in your pocket or other hand.  In the cabin you see all black facia that borders a dark beige section of the clean dashboard. The infotainment system touchscreen is flanked by vertically positioned AC vents. The other two vents for the driver and front seat occupant, on the ends of dashboard also have a nice size.

A car with more of black for its interiors is easier to keep clean than one replete with beige. The one downer is that black makes the cabin feel less roomy and then majority of the car buyers in India still prefer beige. In the Creta, the glass area is large and so you do not miss the airy feel.

The cabin quality as in other Hyundai cars is optimal. All panels are well placed and attention for fit and finish has also been given to smallest of parts such as the 12V power socket.
Space in front is sufficient and front seats are bolstered for good under-thigh support. The driver’s seat can be adjusted to a 20 step range. Another surprise is that Creta does not get reach adjustment for its steering – again something that Elite i20 does have. Thankfully, the steering is positioned well and its rake adjustment works satisfactorily. And the stance of this car helps in getting a good view of the road head.

With a touchscreen based interface, the infotainment system does not bring a clutter of switches on the centre console. You get Aux, USB ports and Bluetooth connectivity. Audio quality is pleasing.

Climate control can be easily operated thanks to tactile buttons and knobs. And it does keep the cabin agreeably cool. Creta also has adequate in-cabin storage solutions – door pockets, cubicle under driver armrest and the glove box.

On the rear seat of this car, two adults can sit comfortably but a third one in the middle will feel claustrophobic at least in long distance travelling.  The seat itself offers good back support and under-thigh support is also satisfactory. Another thing that makes this seat good for two people is the broad armrest that has been ergonomically positioned.

This part of the cabin also feels airy with ample glass area. The rear doors have pockets to take 1 litre bottles and the foldable armrest gets 2 cup holders. A feature provision disparity (again) is that while the top end trim gets a single piece bench seat, the AT that is positioned below it comes with 60:40 split seat.

Creta has a 402 litre boot with a squarish layout. The loading lip is high and that makes it little inconvenient to lift and place heavy bags. The full sized spar wheel is located in the boot.
Hyundai offers 6 variants of Creta of which only the SX+ has AT in both diesel (1.6 CRDi) and petrol (1.6 Dual VTVT) models. All other variants get MT.

The seven colour choices are Polar White, Sleek Silver, Pearl Beige, Stardust, Mystic Blue, Red Passion and Phantom Black.

Prices start from Rs. 8.92 lakh (for 1.6L Dual VTVT 6-Speed Manual Base) and go up to Rs 14.50 lakh (for 1.6L CRDi VGT 6-Speed Automatic SX+ Automatic) – (prices ex showroom, Delhi).

Although it does feel overpriced, the Creta is a well rounded package with refined engines, comfort and convenience features, and essential safety kit. The automatic + diesel combination makes it all the more attractive.
