After stubborn refusals to be a part of the over-riding diesel trend in the Indian car market, Honda ultimately gave in. It came out with a 1.5 litre diesel engine fabricated particularly for India and this has been put in its entry level sedan Amaze.
The Japanese car maker has kept the power-plant for i-DTEC heavily localised to save upon costs and to ensure that the demand is met. Amaze diesel has been launched in 4 variants and is an attractive option in the saloon market with its powerful engine and proper three box proportions.
A review of the features in its base variant:
Amaze is a saloon with a length of 3990mm and the consistency of its design reflects in its three box proportions – it does not seem abruptly chopped from the back. There are slash lines on the bonnet and also on sides. Unlike the single chrome strip in Brio’s front grille, this sedan’s grille has two strips and they have chrome finish even in the base variant. Bumpers get a body colour treatment. You have a colour choice between Taffeta White, Albaster Silver & Crystal Black in Amaze E MT diesel. The windscreen has tint of green. Outside rear view mirrors and door handles are in black.
By increasing the space between wheels, Honda has created a roomy cabin for Amaze. The colour theme for the cabin and seat upholstery is single tone beige. The dashboard is somewhat basic and there seems to be some cost cutting here. Circular AC vents have been positioned above the glove box. There are 2 cup holders in the centre console and a total of 5 bottle holders at front and rear. Amaze E MT diesel being a base variant does not have integrated music system and accessory socket.
This base variant of the saloon does have a set of necessary features for comfort of driver and passengers. The steering wheel can be adjusted for rake and all windows are powered. Headlights can also be positioned as per visibility requirement. Convenience of central locking has been provided. Instrument panel has an ECO lamp with orange illumination and a tachometer. Inside rear view mirror can be adjusted as per changing reflections during day/night. One thing missed in this model is the height adjustment feature for the driver’s seat.
The most significant feature for safety in diesel Amaze E MT is anti lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution. You also get an engine immobilizer that would not let the car engine start unless your unique WAVE key is inserted. A stop lamp has also been put for safe distance from vehicles behind your Amaze on road. And inside the cabin, there are reminders for driver seat belt, headlights on and ignition key in.
With a fuel economy of 15.2 kms/ litre (city) to 25.8 kms/ litre (highways), the Amaze is truly an ‘amazing’ sedan and its efficient i DTEC engine has been helping it get buyers.
