12 July 2016 Ford today launched Mustang in India at starting price of Rs 65 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The company has launched Mustang in only top-trim that comes with 5.0-litre V8 under the hood. The car attracted lot of attention and grabbed eyeballs from all the quarters. The retro design theme of 60s is still visible on this sixth generation iteration. The name stands for untamed horse and is reflected in the way car turnout. The car is high on the latest gadgetry and equipment and features touch screen infotainment system, cruise control, electronic stability control, ABS with EBD etc.Ford has gone all out to put 5.0-litre TiVCT motor under the hood which makes 401 PS and 515 Nm of max power and max torque respectively. The might is transferred to wheels via 6-speed automatic transmission capable of hitting the top speed of 250 kmph.
This year Ford brought a truly American vehicle to India. The Endeavour was the company’s top-spec SUV with American DNA for sale in India but the class of Mustang is significantly premium.
Launched in July 2016 for an ex-showroom price of Rs 65 lakh, the Mustang GT is an iconic product that has charmed auto enthusiasts around the world since 1960s. Its two-door coupe style in combination with a strong engine has been an attraction. The car was already in production for the past 50 years and its popularity never faded away. Its success can be gauged from the fact that the honour of creating the so called ‘muscle car’ or pony car category in America goes to it. Chevrolet Camaro and the Dodge Challenger are other cars built with the same formula as the Ford Mustang.
This 2-door coupe is powered by V8 5.0 litre engine that churns out 395.6 bhp at 6500 rpm and 52.5 kgm of torque. It is mated to 6 speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
The suspension of Mustang GT Fastback comprises double ball joint MacPherson strut with stabilizer bar for front and integral link independent with coil springs & stabilizer bar for rear. Thanks to this revised, completely independent front and rear suspension set up, this model of Mustang is possibly the most lively one ever made. Usually, American cars are good for their straight line stability but not around the corners – the new Mustang easily rubbishes this concept.
As is the norm for cars in this category, it has disc brakes for both front and rear. And how does it look? On the front, the trapezoidal radiator grille of Mustang and its ‘shark bite’ bumper add to the aggressive look. This is further enhanced by the HID headlamps and the daytime running lights. Even the scuff plates in front are illuminated.
Made from a blend of high-strength steel pressings and ultra-high strength castings + forgings, this Ford has its steel tubes laser welded. The combination makes the car’s under belly 28% stronger than what its predecessor had.
In its profile view the Mustang looks stylish with the slope of the roof and the lines on the door panels. It uses 9.0 J X 19 X 45 Alloy wheels at front and 9.5 J X 19 X 52.5 alloys at the rear.
Among other exterior features, it gets power adjustable, foldable, heated outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) with blinkers; rain sensing wipers, pony projection puddle lamp and rear diffuser. This is a two door coupe with fixed rear quarter windows. The tail lamps are LED optimised clear units. These non-sequential tail lamps have amber coloured turn lights.
Inside the cabin too there is lot of sportiness. While there are four seats on offer, it is practically impossible for adults to creep onto the back seat. Even if someone manages to squeeze in, he / she will not be comfortable as the legroom is nil. This place is just good to keep a couple of bags or let the kids sit with legs up. But it anyways is not a family car and is meant for a thin number of sports car enthusiasts who can afford the luxury.
The interiors are ordained with modern features – keyless entry, dual zone climate control and push button start. The infotainment system comprises 8 inch touchscreen with SYNC2. It has 9 speaker sound system with amplifier. There is a CD player and Bluetooth with Voice Control.
There is a special MyKey that lets you limit top speed, audio system volume and set limits to check the disabling of driver-assist features. These assist features include paddle shifters, hill launch assist, parking sensors, rear view camera, driving mode selection and tyre pressure monitoring system. The MyKey is good to be used by responsible parents whose young brats have just attained the age to get behind the wheel.
With a clean layout, the dashboard has toggle switches just beneath the centre console and they are tactile to use. For safety, Mustang has a wide array of features. The airbags are front, side, curtain and knee airbags for both driver and front passenger. Among other safety attributes common in luxury sports cars, mention may be made of Immobiliser - Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS), Intelligent Access with Push Button Start (Passive Entry Passive Startup - PEPS), Perimetric Alarm and Pull-drift Compensation (EPAS).
The colour options for Ford Mustang include Black, Silver, White, Red, Yellow and Magnetic. It comes to the sub-continent on CBU basis from the United States and is priced at Rs 65 lakh (ex showroom, Delhi). In India, its closest rival will be the Audi TT.
