Datsun Redi Go

Datsun Redi Go available in 8 variants

Since its reincarnation in 2013, brand Datsun launched four cars internationally: Go, Go+, on-DO and Mi-DO. Of these Go and Go + came to India and have further been joined by the Redi-GO.

When the GO was launched here, it failed to stir buyer interest. In the entry-level hatchback market segment, Maruti Alto has a stronghold. The other car that gets a fair share of buyers is GO’s own cousin Renault Kwid. To revamp their brand image Datsun had to bring a more competitive product and that is how the Redi-GO was born.

Cost cutting was quite clear in the GO. But it has been concealed well in the new hatchback Redi-GO. It has better styling and more features. Both Kwid and Redi-GO are based on the CMF-A platform and have fairly similar mechanicals. They are powered by the 799 cc, 3-cylinder DOCH petrol engine churning out 53 bhp at 5678 rpm and 72 Nm torque at 4386 rpm.

Datsun Redi-Go has an urban car styling with tallboy design and this is what primarily distinguishes it from the Kwid that looks like a trimmed down SUV. It does appear more attractive than the plain Jane GO.

The front is characterized by a short bonnet and big grille with honeycomb pattern and stocky chrome outline. Instead of fog lamps there are daytime running lights on the sides of bumper and these include 6 LEDs. The fake skid plate for the front is in contrast shade as per body colours. There is chrome garnish with the headlamps assembly. When the headlamps are turned on, the DRLs get switched off automatically. Windscreen has a single arm wiper on the driver’s side but it is not long enough to wipe clean the normally required part of glass. In heavy rains this might cause problems. On the other hand the GO comes with both the wipers.

Redi-GO has a ground clearance of 185 mm which is more than its competitors like Maruti Alto, Hyundai Eon and Tata Tiago. It is also 5mm more than Kwid. The side look of this car is smart with sharp character lines. Wheel arches are prominent and steel wheel size is 13 inch with 155/80 R13 tyres. The upper-end trims have full wheel caps and lower variants – D and A - get just the centre hub gap. Alloys are not an option. Outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) are in black and need to be manually adjusted sans any lever. Door handles have a simple flap-type make. They have body colour for all three trims. And the rear window has black plastic insert. Unlike most Japanese and Indian cars the fuel tank lid is on right side instead of left.

Moving to the rear you will see big tail lights that are contoured on the jutting shape of the hatch. Redi-GO has only one reversing lamp – on the left side tail light. There is a high mount stop lamp on the inner side of the windscreen and it looks more like the Kwid’s stop lamp. A chrome belt embellishes the tailgate on badge on the right hand side simply says “redi-GO” without specifying variants.

Colour choices for the Redi-GO include Ruby (red), Silver, Grey (more like grey+ beige tone), Lime and White.

Stepping inside the Redi-GO is easy thanks to tallboy design. In the cabin you will find the dashboard well styled for the price segment it fits into. The light grey colour makes the small cabin feel airy. Quality of plastics although still economy-grade, is a degree better than what the GO has.

Steering wheel is properly designed with ergonomically placed thumb counter and horn can be used by pressing on any of three spokes. The instrument console is a like what the GO has. It comprises the simple speedometer dial and digital RPM gauge. A small multi-information display is given to keep you informed on distance-to-empty, real-time fuel efficiency and trip meter.

The AC panel is shared with the Kwid but the knobs have been differentiated. They also feel sturdy to operate. The AC is effective enough to make the cabin comfortable in sultry summer. The triangular fixed centre vent is particularly interesting to see. It is also functionally good – diverting a good amount fo air to the rear part of the cabin. This is a cost-effective solution in budget cars that do not have separate rear AC vents.

A basic audio system is provided with CD player, Aux and USB ports. Its buttons are small and display is somewhat dim. Sound quality is satisfactory. Speakers are placed only on the 2 front doors. Interestingly, Datsun also provides a little remote control for the audio unit so occupants at the back seat too can control the operations.

Front seats are thin but provide good support. The seat base is quite long and cushioning is on the soft side. Headrests are fixed as in other cars of this segment. Seating position is high but tall drivers may have problems as its travel range is limited. Having said that, the fore & aft movement though basic is quite light and seat can move on the rails very smoothly.

Rearward visibility is not good because of the thick C pillars and small glass area of rear windscreen. You need to frequently use the ORVMs.

Switches for power windows are provided on the centre console – in front of the gear lever stick but it requires some effort to use them. Two cup holders are also provided here. The glovebox is small but Datsun has scooped an open storage space right above it.

Like the front, the rear doors also open wide making ingress and egress easy. The rear quarter glass area that has plastic on the outside has metal panel on th inside and this looks cheap. Rear windows have to be operated manually but that’s already the segment norm.

Rear seats also offer good support and have fixed headrests. The seat base here too runs long and under-thigh support is therefore good. It is a flat bench seat but 2 rather than 3 people will be more comfortable here. The width of Datsun Redi-GO is 1560 mm. Seat belts are provided but are not retractable-type. There are hooks to buckle them up when not in use.

The boot has 222 litres capacity and a parcel tray is also provided. You can fold down the rear seats to create more space for luggage but the parcel tray causes some obstruction. With some more effort it can be removed. A full size spare is also given in the boot.

Datsun Redi-GO is priced between Rs 2.41 lakhs and 3.72 lakhs (ex-showroom price, Delhi). It is a value for money proposition if someone is looking for a no-frills yet decently equipped and fuel-efficient budget hatchback.
