With changes in excise rules, many of the sedans have gone in sub 4 metre category but General Motors still decided to keep a length of 4249 mm for the saloon model of its Chevrolet Sail.
Available in 4 variants, Sail 1.3 diesel has a 1248 cc 4 cylinder engine mated to 5 speed manual gearbox. Here’s an account of features in the mid segment variant 1.3 LS.
The external styling of Chevrolet Sail 1.3 is rather conventional and it also resembles Sail U-VA from the front. What makes this mid segment variant a little more refined than Sail 1.3 PS is the inclusion of a roof antenna and full wheel covers for the steel wheels. The external door handles and ORVMs have been painted in matching body colour. All other design features are the same as in the entry level model.
The look and feel of Sail 1.3 LS interiors is same as that of base model’s cabin. However, this one is a segment superior to the 1.3 PS and so there is chrome finish on internal door handles and parking brake button. The 3 spoke steering wheel gets a leather wrap for better appearance and grip. Air conditioner’s vents have been done in metallic paint and this gives them a superior look.
There are few more comfort features in here than in the base variant. Chevrolet Sail 1.3 LS diesel has power windows on all four doors. Also, there is the convenience of central locking. All other elements for comfort – such as air conditioner + heater, electrically adjustable ORVMs, remote fuel filler & tailgate release, and digital tachometer – are the same as in Sail 1.3 PS.
In addition to the basic safety features that are also offered with the 1.3 PS version, Chevrolet Sail 1.3 LS comes with an airbag for the driver and a speed sensing auto lock. The safety features that are common with the entry level variant include reminders for driver seat belt, ajar door, key in, a centrally located high positioned stop lamp, side impact front & back door beam and rear seat child protection door locks.
Sail 1.3 diesel has a fuel efficiency of 12.9 to 22 kms / litre. What goes against it is interior plastic quality and dull handling. The good points are good ride quality and roomy interiors. The ones who prefer to be driven around instead of driving themselves may like this diesel saloon.
