The budget end of the Indian car market has a number of contenders and Chevrolet’s Spark has been a fringe player for a long time. But the company has not given up on its competent hatchback yet and so the facelifted version of the car was launched by end of 2012. Spark 1.0 is appreciated for its refined engine and warranty package.
Let us now look at the set of design attributes and other features in the base variant: New Spark 1.0 BS 3
Much of Spark’s restyling for the facelifted avatar is on the front. Its simplistic exterior design has been replaced by more aerodynamic and classy features. The front gets a stylish look with a two part grille that wears Chevrolet badge. With their clear lens, the radiant headlamps also give Spark 1.0 its new image. Front and rear bumpers are body coloured adding to the elegance of the hatch. Windscreen and windows have tinted glass. Towards the sides it is simply the black plastics on the door sills that make for the differentiating factor between the New Spark and the old one. The 155/70 R13 steel tyres have only hub caps as this is the base variant. At the rear the tail lamps add style to the car’s design and they have been optimally positioned to make the vehicle more visible at night. But the actual change at rear is limited to the addition of a black panel on the lower part of the bumper.
When compared to the original model of 2007, there are not many changes in the cabin of the New Spark 1.0 but the shade of plastics has changed to a new tone of beige. Seats of this base variant have a fizzy design pattern on the fabric. The revised instrument panel now has a digital tachometer, tripmeter and fuel gauge. Chevrolet does not offer an integrated music system in the 1.0 BS3. The rear seats still impress with adequate legroom and comfort. The boot space however is not enough and it is better to pack light if you are out on a leisure trip.
Spark 1.0 is the entry level variant of a small hatchback. Its price is less than 4.5 lakhs and so this car does not have many comfort attributes. You cannot even adjust the normal steering wheel for tilt. On the brighter side, yes there is an air conditioner and the rear seats can be folded if you need to stuff in more luggage than what the boot can normally accommodate. It also has bottle holders in door trims and cup holders on the central console. A three position cabin lamp is good for interior illumination when required. The ORVM on driver’s side is internally adjustable.
Only standard features for a safe and secure ride have been fitted in this variant. It comes with seat belts for both front and rear. There is a collapsible steering column for safety against frontal impact. Chevrolet Spark 1.0 also gets a brake booster and it wears tubeless tyres. On the instrument panel there are indicators for low fuel level and door ajar warnings. Rear doors have child safety locks.
New Chevrolet Spark 1.0 is a friendly, little hatch for the city. If you do not need to stuff in bulky suitcases or 5 big people but just need a basic car for daily commuting and occasional trips through highways, this is a fine option.
