Small car buyers looking for a compact hatch powered by more economical diesel fuel did not have many options in India. But General Motors brought about a change with the launch of smallest diesel car in the country – Chevrolet Beat.
Currently available in 4 variants, Beat diesel runs on 936 cc 3 cylinder engine that can deliver a fuel efficiency of 16 kms/ litre in the city and 25 km / litre on the highways.
Here is a brief description of the key features in the base variant Beat 1.0 PS Diesel:
Chevrolet Beat has somewhat eccentric design and its bold silhouette, creases and bulges materialize to give it the appearance of a concept car. The base variant has body coloured bumpers and its stylised steel wheels wear tubeless tyres. Unconventional positioning of rear door handles- towards the spot where the quarter glass usually sits - give Beat the impression of a 2 door coupe.
A black spoiler and the pair of retro looking rounded lamp clusters at the back also create the distinguishing identity for this hatch. There is not much of cosmetic detailing – such as chrome on front grille and body colour on ORVMs, since this is only an entry level variant.
The design aspects of the cabin are in harmony with the peculiar but stylish external embellishment. Quality of materials is admirable and all buttons/switches on the dashboard have a thick surface that adds to the ease of operation. The cabin also has a power outlet and lot of storage space – there are cup holders both at the rear and front, map pockets + bottle holders in front doors, coat hooks and hooks for light bags at the back of seats. The trunk however has a capacity of only 170 litres since this is a small hatch. There is an icy blue illumination around the buttons and on the instrument panel. The latter has a digital tachometer and tripmeter.
This being the base variant is equipped with only some basic features for comfort. There is a manual air conditioner with heating and ventilation system. Outside rear view mirrors can be adjusted internally and you can fold the rear seats to create some more space in the trunk. Chevrolet Beat 1.0 PS also comes with remote fuel lid opener and boot door opener. There are no power windows in this one.
The lower end version of the diesel hatch has elementary safety attributes like seat belts, a high mount stop lamp, indicators for driver seat belt, low fuel level and door ajar warning. Advanced features like central locking system are missing in Beat 1.0 PS model.
There may not be much in term of gadgets and fancy features but the diesel Beat is loved for its fuel economy and ride quality – and so even the base variant of this car finds quite a few buyers.
