A compact luxury crossover SUV by BMW, the X1 arrived in India with a facelift in early 2013. The refreshed car has an updated cabin, more power in its diesel engine and is loaded with new equipment. Also, there is no petrol model in the new line-up.
Let us then check out the features that come with the base version – sDrive20d that runs on 1995 cc 4 cylinder diesel engine mated to 8 speed automatic gearbox.
With a beautifully balanced chassis based on 3 series, the X1 has a longitudinally mounted engine and therefore a broad bonnet. A pair of crease lines converging towards the kidney shaped grille look athletic. The triangular headlamps with LED optimised corona rings and stylish chrome elements add to the charismatic front look. Round fog lamps on body coloured bumper also balance the elegant appearance of this sporty car. The reshaped ORVMs are integrated with side repeater lights. This X1 runs on 225/50 R17 tyres. Glossy plastic cladding along the wheel arches, on side skirts and below the bumpers is another cosmetic upgrade for this BMW SUV. The two part L shaped tail lamps have LED strips for better illumination.
The sporty black cabin with fine brushed aluminium trims here and there gives this X1 trim a very handsome interior look. Layers on the dashboard are typically BMW and important controls are skewed towards the driver for fine ergonomics. For entertainment, this entry level trim has an on-board computer, and a music system with CD, Aux, & USB connectivity. Audio system control is steering wheel mounted and there is a hi-fi loudspeaker system with 8 loudspeakers. The instrument console has chrome lined dials for speedo and tachometer. Tripmeter, odometer, average fuel consumption and distance to empty information is arranged well and is clearly readable.
Even if it’s the entry level trim, the X1 has very comfortable, upholstered seats and the ones in front are electrically adjustable for height and back support. Armrests have been provided on all doors and in between front and rear seats. The climate controls maintains ideal temperature levels inside the cabin. For ease of navigation you get a high resolution display screen that offers detailed information and comprehensive overview of the roadmap. You may also employ Voice control to inform the system of your destination. The iDrive control on the central console has a soft and chunky feel and is simple to use. A rear parking sensor has been fitted but there is no parking camera in this SUV. Convenience features for the driver include parking assist, adjustable steering wheel, keyless entry and central locking.
As a BMW sports utility vehicle, the X1 sDrive 20d comes with a host of smartly planned safety features. The runflat tyres let you drive for up to 250kms after a blowout. It comes with 6 airbags including head and side airbags for driver and front passenger. Antilock braking system, cornering brake control, dynamic stability control and dynamic traction control are some other safety systems of this car. Front seat belts have pyrotechnic belt tensioners and belt force limiters. Side impact protection beams also augment the overall safety of this X1 trim.
BMW X1 sDrive 20d costs Rs 28.6 lakhs (ex showroom price Delhi). It has fuel efficiency of 10.5 to 13.8 km/litre.
