Launched in 2010, this 3-Series Touring Estate platform based soft-off roader, being the most affordable SUV from BMW, became an overnight success. X1 made BMW marquee quite affordable, thus ensuring unprecedented walk-ins and bookings for the car. However, competition from AUDI Q3 and aware car buyers having understood the sparse package of X1, made them lose their launch momentum forcing BMW a back to the drawing board mode.
The new X1 launched in Feb 2013 corrects quite a few old mistakes. The most important being a move out from petrol power plants. New X1 now comes only with diesel`s under its hood. New X1 has undergone styling and mechanical tweaks.
2 Litre TwinPower turbo diesel engine delivers 7 Ps more power than its earlier version. New X1 now comes with 8 Speed gearbox Vs 6 speed earlier which is BMW Efficient Dynamics Technology and Eco Pro Mode. The new X1 now comes Brake Regeneration and Start-Stop function, less power consuming Electro Mechanical steering system as against hydraulic power steering in earlier version and ECU mapping optimised for economy.
Externally the new BMW X1 has shed a lot of plastics used in earlier X1. The plastics cladding on front and rear bumper and side skirts gets a glossy finish. Headlamps gets LED corona rings, external mirrors are reshaped and come with integrated turn indicators.
All in all the new X1 definitely gets bells and whistles worthy of its price. It definitely does not feel, look or behave like its Gen 1 X1 which was too sparse, thus leaving just the marquee name as key reason for brand purchase.
