An Audi super car with wonderful new gearbox and stunning, explosive performance – R8 comes with a facelift and even better attitude. India does not have enough good roads to enjoy a sports car drive and it will not feel good to drag it in stop and go traffic. But the ones who have money to splurge, the top variant of R8 may feel very attractive. 
 
The R8 V10 Spyder 5.2 FSI has 5204 cc V10 petrol engine. There’s 518 bhp of power and 54 kgm of torque with this motor. An account of its styling features and special equipment in this super car follows: 
 
Exteriors 
 
The German designers have given it typical attributes of a sports car with low stance and large air intakes. Add to this the ultra light weight construction concept for the body and the result is dynamic, precise, safe handling with high passive safety. At the front, the new hexagonal grille with fine chrome bands catches attention. The 4 Audi rings have been put on the edge of hood and not over the grille. There are big black air intakes to direct air to the radiator and the brakes have 3 crossbars. Audi provides an optional front splitter made of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) with all R8 trims and it is standard with updated R8 V10 Spyder. The matt Titanium Gray air intakes and clever changes to the hexagonal grille visibly emphasise the exclusive position of the top end model.
 
The all LED headlights have a nice configuration - a special control unit converts the strip-like daytime running lights into turn signals. The LEDs for the high and low beams are placed over and beneath the daytime running lights. The headlamp cluster also includes a static turning light. 
 
Outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) have a sleek contour and the sideblades are made of CRPF. At the rear, the design is distinguished by large cowls in shining silver and integrated into these are upright air intakes.
 
Interiors 
 
On stepping inside the cabin of Audi R8 Spyder you find yourself engulfed in a luxury-level racing ambience. The most distinguishing feature of the two door car is its monoposto. There is a large arc that defines the driver’s area of the cockpit. The multifunctional sport steering wheel with flat bottomed rim has a nice grip. With clearly structured controls, the ergonomics are also admirable. Speed is displayed digitally on the standard driver information system. The dials on the instrument console and the gear shift lever in R8 Spyder have red rings – this touch up highlights the sporty character of the super car. The shift paddles of the S tronic have been made bigger for ease of operation and like the entry sills, they are in aluminium look. 
 
Audi designers have done a good job for the aesthetics and the workmanship is refined. Most buttons and knobs glimmer with their subtle chrome touches and the air con vents look smart with their high gloss black. The R8 Spyder has a navigation system plus and the Bang & Olufsen Sound System. 
 
Comfort Features 
 
The two door R8 Spyder has comfortable seats for its driver and co-driver – these are electrically adjustable for height and back support.  Sport seats are also heated for more luxury. The leather upholstery for seats and door trims can be chosen in a variety of elements and design patterns. Automatic climate control keeps the cabin comfortably cool/heated in varying temperatures outside. The hydraulic supported power steering wheel has tilt and telescopic adjustment convenience. 
 
Standard driver centric features include hill start assist, electromechanical parking assist, cruise control and paddle shifters. There is a pair of cup holders in the centre console and a glovebox has been sculpted in front of co-driver. 
 
Safety Features 
 
Thanks to its rigid, high strength external shell and the reinforced cabin with side impact beams, the Audi R8 Spyder is a safe car. It has four wheel drive system that ensures good traction at all speeds but has also been fitted with electronic stability program (ESP). The security of car and its occupants is maximised because ESP senses and reduces loss of traction. If there is a loss of steering control, the automatic system applies brakes and helps in steering the vehicle in the direction where the driver intends to go. Brake pressure is applied individually to wheels – to the outer front wheel to offset oversteer, or to the inner rear wheel to offset understeer. There are 6 air bags as standard for driver and co-driver. 
 
Tyre pressure monitoring, anti lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, anti slip regulation and electronic differential lock are other safety attributes. Seatbelts get load limiters & pretensioners.  
 
This top end trim costs Rs 1.98 crore (ex showroom price Delhi). Audi R8 Spyder is a very serious super car that displays its true colours on well surfaced racetracks.
