Not many would think of owning and maintaining a super car in India – the mind blowing performance of an Audi R8 can come into real action only on a racetrack. But for professionals and the ones who are interested in a sports car with wonderful handling, this no nonsense, zippy coupe is a good choice. Available in both coupe and convertible avatars, the Audi R8 received a facelift in early 2013 and we do have models (in limited numbers) in India.
Lets us now delve deeper into the features of R8 V8 4.2 FSI that is powered by 4163 cc V8 petrol engine. This is mated to 7 speed S tronic gearbox. The engine churns out 423 bhp and has 43 kgm of torque.
The stylised profile of Audi R8 V8 4.2 FSI has all the looks of an aggressive sports car. After the first facelift the changes have been largely mechanical – (the replacement of robotised 6 speed manual gearbox by a seven speed dual clutch transmission) – and the designers have not played much with the already dynamic external features /aesthetics of the car. So the bonnet is sleek and expansive with Audi rings lower down its central edge. The slim headlamps have bright LED inserts. And these headlamps stand atop large air dams – designed to restrict the flow of air reaching the underside of the car. It’s a two door, two seater coupe with a sharply arched roofline. You can choose 18 or 19 inch stylised alloy wheels for your R8 V8 trim. Outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) have integrated side turn indicators. The elongated tail lamps, a new valence and large exhaust holes on either side of the bumper are the distinguishing features of the car at the rear.
This two seater coupe has been practically designed with all controls within easy reach of car – the individual who would actually want and enjoy the most of this Audi. The multifunction flat bottomed steering wheel has a chunky feel and comes with gearshift paddles. MMI panel together with the central AC vents and the large instrument cluster create one compact unit angled towards the driver. The sporty gear lever stick stands on the centre console and is surrounded by silver veneer. For entertainment you get the integrated Audi Sound System with radio and Bluetooth interface. So you can play CDs, MP3s and music from USB and Aux devices. The instrument panel has big dials and MMI display for other crucial information.
As a two seater coupe, the R8 V8 4.2 FSI has been fabricated well for comfort of driver and co-driver. However being a sports car it cannot have all those lavish, luxurious elements that adorn Audi’s saloons and SUVs. Both the seats are electrically adjustable for height, lumbar support and are also heated to offer maximum comfort. The hydraulic supported power steering wheel can also be set for rake and reach. Climate control and air quality control effectively maintain ideal temperatures in the small cabin.
Hill start assist, cruise control and parking assist with camera come to the aid of driver. A couple of small cup holders have been carved out in the cockpit. ORVMs are power adjustable and retractable.
Audi R8 V8 4.2 FSI is fabricated with a rigid body shell and a reinforced occupant cell with side intrusion beams that are fitted to protect occupants in case of a collision. This sports car has standard two-stage, head and thorax and knee airbags for both driver and co driver. Four-wheel anti lock braking system and brake assist optimise the safety of R8 V8 4.2 FSI. Electronic stability program and traction control are standard set ups. Seat belt safety is enhanced by load limiters and pretensioners.
This Audi sports coupe is priced at Rs 1.54 crore (ex showroom price Delhi). Evidently it’s not an everyday use or family car, but the racing enthusiasts looking for mind blowing performance will love this one.
