Volkswagen New Passat

Volkswagen Passat Only the Best

People have always loved the Passat and the German car maker is here to keep that up with all new seventh generation variant which comes with powerful diesel engine.

ecardlr.com National

Volkswagen is out with the seventh generation of its much appraised and loved sedan, the Volkswagen Passat. The car is not radically different but is still a lot better than the older variants. The car is powered with a 2 liter diesel engine which is mated to a six speed automatic transmission, which together work to provide a ride without any hiccups. The car is even more fuel efficient than the older ones and offers the best mileage in its segment. Volkswagen also taken forward its BlueMotion technology and the car produces the least amount of CO2 among its competitions. The Volkswagen Passat has been very competitively priced and is surely going to give birth to a price war which will only help the Indian consumer. The car will be competing with the Volvo S60 D3, Honda Accord, BMW 3 series and the Audis.
Referred to as Volkswagen’s seventh generation Passat the new Passat is more of just a makeover than a completely new car. This doesn’t mean the car uses old parts. All the exterior parts have been changed other than the roof which is still the same. The Passat has a corporate look which Volkswagen has incorporated since the launch of its Scirocco in 2008. The car no longer has the smooth curves and circular headlamps and the car looks very simple. The car looks very much inspired from the Phaeton which gives it a more expensive look.
The front has horizontal chrome strips which make the car look wider that it actually is. The car has a very thick bumper which separates the air damp from the grille and there are rectangular fog lamp clusters on the sides which have two lamps. The car looks like a racing car from the front, thanks to its extensive use of chrome, which will be loved by Indians. The angular headlamps have a line of LEDs and bi-Xenon projectors inside. This gives the Passat a very distinctive and classy view from the front.
From the side the car looks very familiar with a bold crease running across its length and even on the bonnet. There is a belt line which starts off at the headlamps and continues form over the wheel arches to the door handles and ends finally at the tail lamps. There is chrome lining round the windows too. The car is longer by 4 mm but it’s actually looks bigger than that. The rear view mirrors have built in turn signals which look stunning. There are changes even at the rear, and the old headlamps have been replaced with new wraparound ones which have a line of LEDs running along with it. There are two chrome strips at the rear too. One is at the lower end of the bumper while the other is on the boot lid.
Volkswagen has used a special technology which makes the front and rear wide screens resist a lot of noise. The engine mounts have been changed to dampen the vibration.
The interiors of the Passat are fitted in with a lot of technological advances. It is very much familiar though. The dashboard has the same layout as the previous models and comes with a lot of wood fitted in. The car also has an analog clock similar to the one found in the Phaeton and the instrument panel is cluttered with various gadgets. The top end model comes with keyless entry and also has a dedicated starter button. There is also a electronic parking brake button which is located next to the gear lever now. The plastic is very less but wherever it is, it is of the highest quality and feels very rich and polished.
The front driver seat is 12 way adjustable so it is very comforting for people with different heights and body ratios. The drivers comfort is also taken care by a technology which will cool or heat up the driver’s seat as and when required. The seat is very firm and is ideal for a thrilling ride. The rear seats have a very high position and are very supportive and come with ample legroom for the passengers to feel comfortable. Unfold the arm rest to find a couple of cup holders and fold them back to seat a fifth passenger.
In terms of features, Passat has many. The dual zone climate control is perfect for the travellers and makes sure you get fresh and clean air always. The sunroof is another added feature. The media house is powerful and is accessible via aux-in as well as USB. There is a small reversing camera which one can see only when it pops out of the lid while reversing. The camera screen comes up on the display unit which is also your touchscreen music system.
Engine, Performance and Transmission
The Volkswagens new Passat is currently offered with only one engine option. The car comes with a 2 liter common rail motor. The engine produces a maximum power of 170 bhp at 4200 rpm and the maximum torque is limited at 350 Nm which is achieved at 1750 rpm. The power is 35 horses above the power produced by the older generations of the Passat.  The Germans have added a Diesel Particulate Filter, or DPF, which helps keep the engine out of problems and still follows the emission norms. The engine feels less noisy but VW can do better. The engine can be heard clattering at idle and there is huge sound at high revs. But while driving the car at midlevel rpms you will not hear the engine and the Passat works very quietly. The stop-start system brought in by VW works fine but it was seen that the engine got shut off even when the car was just at a standstill.
The powerful 2 L engine has been mated to a six speed automatic transmission. This twin clutch, or DSG, transmission works without any hiccups and works in a very good sync with the motor. There is obviously the initial lack of response but once it starts running it does so perfectly. As soon as you press the throttle the DSG choses the right gear for your drive and you can sit back and relax. The Passat cruises quickly to the 100 kmph mark from standstill, for this it takes only 8.73 seconds. The 160 kmph mark is crossed after an additional 14.8 seconds. The cars acceleration is terrific as well and the car will zoom from 20 kmph to 80 kmph in just 5.66 seconds.
The car is obviously torque laden and the power surges on to your feet only after 2000 rpm. While driving the car in the ‘D’ gear the car zooms past the market easily and also quite efficiently. The cars speed is very good and you won’t feel the need to hit the red rpm marks. For the speed lovers, the car comes with paddle shifters which have been mounted on to the steering wheel. The gear changes are very smooth. Volkswagen is offering the Passat with manual transmission only in the low end mode, the Trendline.
Ride and Handling
If you think the powertrain was the best of the car there is more to come. The most luxurious part of the Passat is its highly active suspension system.  The Germans have worked really hard on the suspension to make your ride free from any road disturbances. The car feels designed with Indian roads in mind as the car easily passes over the craters, unfinished roads or uneven tarmac. The Passat’s suspension works best at midlevel speeds or low speeds. The wide tires, 215/55 – R16, work very well to provide a firm grip on the road too.
The car is also sealed from any unwanted noise but at high speeds some noise seeps in from the A-pillars. Although the car is very comfortable but it misses the rock solid feel of the older generations. That’s mainly because of the new soft springs that are used by VW in Passat. This also leads to slight body roll which can be felt at high cornering speeds. The driver will also be able to feel the torque steer and will have to hold on firmly while traversing uneven roads. The Passat is a car which would turn in very generously into the turns but is hard to keep straight. The driver also doesn’t get any feel of the road on to his hands and the steering works very smoothly.
The braking ability of the vehicle is even better than it was in the older variants. The brakes have a strong stopping power and the pedal feels very soft on the legs. Overall the car, accelerates, stops, turns and returns whenever and wherever you want it to. The car comes from 60 mph to zero in just 130 feet.
Safety features of the car include anti-locking disc brakes, stability and traction control, front and rear side
airbags and the front side airbags. In case of a crash, the fuel supply will be directly cut off and the doors will be unlocked. The car has been given a 5 on 5 rating for its front and side crash protection. The car also offers roadside assistance, stolen vehicle location, automatic crash notification and remote vehicle access.
Fuel Economy
Now is the time where we talk about the Volkswagens BlueMotion technology. Many people call it to be a hog wash but trust me it is not. The car which is heavier than its previous generation offers astonishing mileage on both highways as well as cities. The DPF is another feature that helps the car in attaining a higher fuel economy than its rivals.
The Volkswagen Passat offers a fuel economy of 10.8 kmpl in the cities and 15.2 kmpl on the highways. This is simply terrific for a car in its segment. These figures are actually better that the older versions by 0.8 kmpl and 1.4 kmpl for the cities and highways respectively.
The Volkswagen Passat may not be drastically different to its previous generation car but it is still ages ahead of them in terms of technology. The car comes only in diesel which will disappoint many who were eagerly waiting for the launch of the TSi engine. But the diesel engine is extremely powerful and works without any problems. The fuel economy is another pro of the car which will surely excite the Indian crowd who always consider it to be a big factor.
The car also has the best quality of interiors one will find on a car in its segment. The hushed cabin and the extremely comfortable ride are something which will attract everyone. The car is perfect for the people who like going on long rides, especially with the sunroof and climate control option. The safety features are as good as any Volvo car will give you and the additional features make your ride more enjoyable and memorable. The entry level variant, the Volkswagen Passat Trendline, will cost one rupees 20.8 lakhs while the top end variant, the Volkswagen Passat Highline, will cost you rupees 26.65 lakhs.
