New Ford Figo upgrades to fight mid-life fatigue in car buyers interest

Having had two glorious years on sales front Ford Figo was showing signs of fatigue, no wonder Ford decided to give its largets selling car a real makeover. The upgraded Fiog gets lots of external revisions liek head and tail lamps, steering mounted stereo controls, new seat fabric and Rivieria blue matching instrument panel

Ford has had quite a run with its Figo hatchback ever since its launch in India a little over two years ago. The boxy little hatchback has since gone on to become Ford’s most successful car sold in india to date, taking the fight to the segment heavyweight, the Maruti Swift, from the get go. And while the Figo was able to hold its own against better-equipped and more modern competitors arguably well, the competition hasn’t sat still. Case-in-point being the new Swift that launched last year. So, considering the ever-increasing competition in its segment, and in an attempt to tackle its rivals better, Ford has launched an updated version of the Figo to claw back some lost ground and bring it firmly into contention once again.

The update car comes with a number of revisions to the exterior, including redesigned head-and tail-lamps, a new hexagonal grille, revised fog lamp housings and eight-spoke alloy wheels.

On the inside, additional damping has made the cabin a quieter place to be, and Ford has also added a new stalk for the steering column-mounted audio controls. While the stalk does add to the convenience factor, it is also fiddly to use and we would have preferred conventional steering-mounted audio controls. Other changes to the interior include a new blue seat fabric and a ‘Riviera Blue’ instrument panel colour to match.

The Figo’s engine line-up remains unchanged with a 1.4-litre Duratorq diesel and a 1.2-litre petrol doing duty. Ford has, however, tweaked the diesel engine to make the low and mid-range even more responsive than it already was. And considering the current Figo’s diesel is already a competent tool in city conditions, the improved calibration only steps things up a notch and could possibly even have an effect on the overall economy. Out on the highway though, the diesel car we drove felt a bit out of breath thanks to its modest 68bhp output.

The new Figo comes at a marginal premium of Rs 3000-5000 across the range. The base 1.2 petrol retails at Rs 3.85 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), while the top-spec Titanium diesel variant sells for Rs 6 lakh, which makes it good value for money.

But while the updates makes the Figo feel fresher, there isn’t much that is new, making this update nothing more than a minor facelift. Also, Ford has still not added power windows at the rear. Aside from that however, the new Figo builds on its core strengths, making it a value-for-money hatchback that does a lot right and little wrong.
