Toyota Land Cruiser - A Proficient Off-roader with Loaded, Luxurious Cabin
Meta Description: Toyota Land Cruiser Prado handles challenging terrains easily with its torquey engine and 4WD system.
Description: Made chiefly for off-roading, Land Cruiser Prado came with a facelift for 2014 and has a longer equipment list now.
Toyota Land Cruiser is made for terrains with some truly challenging roads. With a brawny profile and tough build, it can effortlessly move on broken tarmac even with loads of water or slosh around it. The 4WD system and torquey engines give the Land Cruiser models some good off-roading abilities.
The Land Cruiser has two variants in India. One of these is the LC200 powered by 4.5 litre V8 diesel engine churning 285 bhp and with 66 kgm of torque. It is mated to 6 speed automatic transmission. The other is Prado with 3.0 litre diesel engine that has 170 bhp on tap and 41.8 kgm torque. This motor is coupled with 5 speed automatic transmission. A facelifted version of the Prado was launched in December 2013 and has already been launched in India.
Ecardlr reviews the Land Cruiser Prado (2982 cc 4 cylinder diesel engine variant) with its new looks and updated features:
The latest version of Prado retains its mechanical set-up and the changes are only cosmetic. It headlamps have a new design and get LED daytime running lights at the bottom. The split front bumper also sports a new look and the fog lamps are now placed in round grooves instead of rectangular ones. Side profile is largely the same and there are turn indicators on the ORVMs. The Prado uses 18 inch alloy wheels with 265/60 R18 tyres.
          Aggressive Front Grille

Land Cruiser Prado is a large car with a length of 4760 mm and height of 1885 mm. Prominent lines and creases on the body give it a muscular and well-chiselled look. At the back, the facelifted model has redone tail lamps with smart design tweaks and they look more stylish than before. The licence plate garnish has also been redesigned while the reflector lights on the rear bumper remain unchanged. This burly Land Cruiser SUV scales at 2140 kg.
There are no major changes observed in the cabin after the facelift. Land Cruiser Prado’s interior has good fit & finish but the texture of different features looks more durable than luxurious. You sit high in this Toyota SUV and the visibility from the driver’s seat is appreciable. The seats are also comfortable and there is a feel of airiness in the large cabin built on 2790 mm wheelbase. Driver’s seat is electrically adjustable and memory optimised. The dashboard in the facelifted car has wooden inlays and the central console comes with reshaped buttons and a central dial. These ergonomically placed buttons and knobs are easy to operate. The large, hooded dials on the instrument cluster can also be read easily. This car’s steering wheel feels firm to grip.
Land Cruiser is quite practical too. Temperature is evenly maintained by the 3-zone climate control thanks to separate AC ducts on three rows of seats. And there are buttons on the inside of the D-Pillar which when pressed push down the last row of seats into the floor and form a flat luggage cove. There’s 620 litres of space in the luggage cove. The glass opens individually on the split tailgate.

An air cooled box between the front seats can be used to store your energy drink cans and juices for an adventurous day on rough terrains. The equipment and cabin features list is rather long. Besides the three-zone climate control it comprises keyless entry & go, a 6 CD changer with MP3 player, USB port, Aux input, and Bluetooth connectivity. Furthermore, there is reversing camera, parking sensors, cruise control and adaptable air suspension that add to the comfort of driving this luxury SUV. The off road package comprises advanced attributes such as Crawl Control, multi-terrain select, and multi-terrain monitor. Among the new comfort features are a 7 inch screen and a heater on second row seats.
On the safety front Land Cruiser Prado 4x4 is equipped with seven airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist, vehicle stability control and traction control. Tyre pressure monitoring is a standard feature post the facelift. The front seats have whiplash injury prevention headrests.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
With a high sitting position and good all round visibility (part thanks to the large ORVMs), you get a good view of the front, rear and sides. The diesel engine is not as refined as the power-trains in Prado’s German competitors. Its humming is clearly audible during idling and it lacks the smoothness that you expect from an SUV of this segment. However, it does feel better when you rev it up a little.
          Toyota Prado D-4D-Diesel

While it may not sound very refined at idling, that 2982 cc 4 cylinder unit has ample power and it is performance oriented. So when you take it through the city it pulls cleanly from the low rev range although the automatic transmission is a little slow in shifting – we wish Toyota offered a manual ‘box option with the Prado.
The SUV feels confident at higher speeds and it does the 0-100 km/hour dash in only 5.24 seconds. You can accelerate up to 130 km/hour on open highways and it stays composed. The peak torque of 41.8 kgm comes between 1600 and 2800 rpm.
Actually, the heart of Prado’s drive lies in its off-roading abilities. With the 170 bhp power (at 4300 rpm) of the diesel engine, adaptable dampers and a permanent 4WD drive system you can take it to almost any ground – in deserts, on forest trails and on broken, wet terrains – it does its job effortlessly.
Ride and Handling
While you are on the road, there is some controlled SUV bounce and the electrically adjustable air suspension keeps the body roll under good control especially around the corners. But you might take some time to get used to cornering with the high sitting position in this SUV.

It is the handling of this car that disappoints a driving enthusiast. The steering is a bit of letdown – it is light to use in the city but does not weigh up as you speed up on the highways. So you just have to hope that you are pointing out correctly in the direction where you want to go. If you drive more of hatchbacks and smaller sedans, this might get quite intimidating.
The Sport and Comfort mode of the SUV change the ride quality and the wallow-y nature of this SUV considerably. But it feels little fidgety in the Sport mode. In a nutshell while the Prado is a competent and reliable performer off-roads, it is dull to drive and somewhat impractical for daily use within city and on highways.
Fuel Economy
This is another category that makes Toyota Land Cruiser not very easy to maintain for your daily work drives. This hefty sports utility vehicle empties its 87 litre fuel tank rather fast. It goes only 6.5 km/litre in the city and about 11 km/litre on the highways.  As the 3.0 litre engine burns fuel, it can burn a hole in your pocket too.
Land Cruiser Prado is not as involving to drive as a BMW X5 but it is those special off-roading traits and the imposing road presence that give it special strengths as a luxury SUV – and it was precisely with these objects in mind that the Japanese built the initial Land Cruiser models in 1940s!
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado VX-L is priced at Rs 84.58 lakhs (ex showroom price, Delhi).
