Nissan Micra Active

Expert Review Nissan Micra Active

With the same 1198 cc, 3 cylinder petrol engine as Micra, the Micra Active is a low end budget hatch with optimum practicality for city driving.

ecardlr.com National

Using the same 1.2 litre petrol engine as the Micra, Nissan’s Micra Active is positioned in the lower half of the hatchback segment. Even if it is considered a ‘stripped down version’ of its sibling (Micra), the car does have enough substance for its price tag. This hatchback actually replicates the pre facelift Micra with some subtle modifications. It is a balanced package with good build quality and an adequately spacious cabin. Micra Active competes against similarly priced Hyundai i10 and Ford Figo.

           Nissan Micra Active
There is no diesel option with Micra Active. The 1198 cc 3 cylinder petrol engine mated to 5 speed manual transmission churns out 67.1 bhp and has 10.6 kgm of torque. And how does this car score on the different parameters of design, performance and efficiency? Here is a compete analysis:
While the car is a close replica of Micra, Nissan has restyled the front for Micra Active. The long section of the air dam is spread across the lower part of bumper. Front grille has a honeycomb pattern but unlike the facelifted Micra of 2013, there is no V shaped chrome band on the grille. The smoked headlamps with their rounded shape look good on the profile of this hatch. There are no fog lamps with any of the variants. A radio antenna is put on the front end of the roof.

              Micra Active Internally Adjustable ORVM
The top end versions XV and XV Safety get body coloured outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) and door handles. They also have full wheel covers. Nissan Micra Active rides on 155/80 R13 tyres for its XL and XV variants and bigger 165/70 R14 tyres come with XV Safety trim. Viewed from the side the Active looks simple and compact. Complementing the curvy design theme of the car are the rounded tail lamps. The rear bumper too has been chiselled for a wavy look. Micra Active has boot space of 251 litres.

          Micra Active Bright Tail Lamp
In terms of dimensions, Micra Active is 24 mm shorter in length than 3825 mm long Micra. But the wheelbase of this hatch measures 2450 mm which is the same as its sibling.
Thanks to the wheelbase of 2450 mm like the bigger Micra, there is adequate space inside the beige and black coloured cabin. Quality of plastics is acceptable even though it is not as refined as in some other cars of this class. Ingress/egress is simple and seating position is high. The front seats however are not adjustable for height. You can set the steering wheel for rake and the ORVMs are manually adjustable. All windows are powered in the XV and XV (S) trims but only the front ones in XL. Other cabin attributes of the top end versions include remote keyless entry, integrated audio system with FM, Aux-input & USB port and a 12V power outlet. The instrument console features tachometer and semi-drive computer.

         Micra Active Tilt Steering

Front seat headrests are adjustable and there is vanity mirror on passenger’s side. Cubby holes in form of door pockets are not very big. The back seat is not really comfortable and would have been better if there was more cushioning and lumbar support. Manual air conditioner and heater is provided for cabin comfort.

             Micra Active Safety Airbags

With regards to safety/security, the XL and XV variants get only basic sets ups such as central door locking, speed sensing auto door lock, engine immobiliser, low fuel warning indicator, headlight on indicator and key remove indicator. But the special XV Safety variant comes with additional elements that include driver & front passenger airbags, anti lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
Micra Active uses 1198 cc three cylinder engine but unlike other cars with three cylinder engines in India, there is no balancer shaft in here. So there is some vibration at idle and this is transmitted through the steering wheel. But it does smoothen out a little as you rev up the engine. The engine response to a light press of the accelerator is good and Micra Active moves forward eagerly. Throttle response at low revs and on part-throttle is admirable and you can comfortably drive the car in fifth gear at speeds as low as 50 km/hr. Power delivery is linear and gets progressively stronger.
The 67.1 bhp of engine power and light kerb weight make this hatch sprightly and its acceleration prowess will please most people. The 0-100kph dash takes 15.5 seconds. In some parts of powerband this engine also feels as noiseless as a four-cylinder motor. The power starts to build up as you get into the mid-range and the engine also responds well here. It pulls quite strongly from 4000 rpm and this is where the maximum torque of 10.6 kgm comes. The peak power comes at 5000 rpm but that is the limit of this 3 cylinder unit. You cannot compare it to the strength of Maruti Suzuki’s 4 cylinder K series engine. The engine actually starts getting audible at 100 km/hour in the fifth gear and that’s what tells that it is getting revved to limits.
While the clutch is light, Micra Active’s gearbox does not feel very slick. There is a prominent transmission whine in the first and second gear. But with its easy to drive factor and that low range throttle response, Micra Active does prove itself to be a practical city car.
Ride and Handling
The suspension of this hatch is quite thumpy at city driving speeds and you need to be cautious against big potholes. But minor road undulations are dismissed off well. With increase in speed the ride gets flatter. This car also lets road noise filter through the cabin and the suspension never realty feels quiet.
Thanks to a light steering wheel, moving the car through cramped spaces is easy but the steering does not weigh up appropriately at higher speeds and this impact handling. It does not offer the feedback that you expect. And so you would feel insecure to go beyond 100 km/hour. There is fair amount of body roll around the corners. Brake pedal feels mushy to use but its bite works well. Micra Active is not really ‘fun to drive’ and it is better suited to city driving than the highways.
Fuel Economy
The Nissan hatch performs better than its rival Ford Figo in this category. It goes 11.8 km on a litre within the city and has an efficiency of 16.8 km/litre on the highways. You can feel free to use the air conditioner without having to worry much about a low FE.
Even though Micra Active does not have good ride and handling qualities, the strong combination of its cabin space, city-friendliness and decent fuel economy make it an optimum buy. Available in a range of Rs 4.12 lakhs to 4.71 lakhs (ex showroom price Delhi), it is a nice package for first time car buyers.
