Maruti Suzuki Ertiga The New Baby in a New Segment

Maruti Suzuki has now launched its all new Ertiga and it has already raised many eyebrows.

ecardlr.com National

The Indian car manufacturer has been a market leader among the four wheel makers and has led the segment both in number of vehicles sold and also the revenue earned. The company has earned a lot of respect for its longevity and durability and now the company is trying to get into the Multi Utility Vehicle segment.
The Ertiga launched by Maruti Suzuki holds huge significance for the Indian car manufacturer and has been made in complete collaboration with the Suzuki Motor Corporation. The car was first launched in January 2012 in the Auto Expo. The Ertiga is available in the many diesel and petrol variants. It is also available in a variety of colors namely - Serene Blue, Firebrick Red, Ecru Beige, Granite Grey, Superior White, Silky Silver and Dusky Brown.
The Ertiga is the all new Multi-Purpose vehicle by Maruti Suzuki. The car has a monocoque style construction provides the riders with excellent comfort and ride experience. It has a total length of 4265 mm, which makes it a bit shorter than the other major MPVs in the Indian market such as Toyota Innova, Tata Aria and Mahindra Xylo. Also the height of the car is lower than the other MPVs making it easier for people transferring from a hatchback or sedan to the MPV. The front of the vehicle has been designed in traditional Suzuki style with backwards sweeping heading towards the A-pillar which is similar to the ones we see in Swift. The front grille is very similar to the Ritz and the bumpers will remind you of the Swift Dzire. The elongated fog lamps are very well placed over the bumpers.
The wheel arches look very elegant but the front view of the vehicle will expose the thin tires which rob the Ertiga away from its beauty. The bonnet and the windshield are of ideal size looking at the MPV. The rear glass is very huge and people won’t feel claustrophobic at all. The taillights aren’t elongated but have a flat hatch similar to the Ritz. The rear end has central mounted fog lamps just like the Swift. The reflective element on the two ends of the bumper gives it a very beautiful look.
People who have driven the other Maurti Suzuki vehicles will easily notice that the interiors of the Ertiga comes from the Swift and the color variation is the one we see on the new Dzire. The dashboard has been given a black and beige treatment. It is complete plastic and one will not notice a single strand of wood inside the dashboard. But the dashboard looks very premium and has very less vibrations.
The Ertiga is filled with switches and knobs for controlling the vehicle parameters. The car has its old conventional air conditioning setup but it is very powerful and cools the whole cabin quite quickly. There are separate controls for A/C on the second row roofs. The car has two different music system for its low end VXi/VDi variant and a different one for its top end ZXi/ ZDi variant. Both of them come with four powerful speaker and are accessible with CD and MP3s. The music system also accepts aux in and USB inputs. One will be pleased to find the steering mounted audio controls on the top end model.
The beige colored fabric is adopted from the Dzire and is the only option on the Ertiga. There are seven seats in total and all of them are very comfortable and have a flat back with lumbar support. The seats are a bit higher than the Swift and Ritz as it is a MPV. There is no center arm rest for the front seats which is a big con. The second row seats are adjustable and split in 60:40 ratio. If the third row is not being used then the second row passengers can get some extra leg room.Power windows are available in the middle and top end models of the Ertiga. The boot space has been compromised for the third row seats.
Safety has been kept a priority and the car has been designed to driven on all the various roads of India. The child safety lock comes with central locking and door or seat belt open warnings, which areall quite good for family travellers. The head padding is a good addition as it helps the driver from any damage while sudden acceleration or breaking. The vehicle also comes with ABS, airbags and EBD.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
The Ertiga comes with small capacity engines due to its dependency on the Swift platform. The diesel vehicle has a 1.3 liter DDiS engine but unlike the Dzire the Ertiga is backed with a VGT or a variable geometry turbocharger. The engine produces a maximum power and maximum torque of 90 PS at 4000 rpm and 200 Nm at 1750 rpm respectively. The diesel variant produces a lot of noise and due to the VGT one does not experiences the turbo kick and the engine struggles a lot while going uphill. But the car offers very decent speed and when the turbocharger works in full swing it is easy to overtake others. The diesel version works well above the 1800 rpm mark below which it causes some problem. The car hits the 100kmph mark in 14.2 seconds and has the top speed of 170 kmph.
The petrol variant is backed with a 1.4 liter KB14 engine and produces a maximum power of 95 PS at 6000 rpm but as expected the torque produced in much lower at 130 Nm which comes at 4000 rpm. The petrol is naturally aspirated and as expected one needs to rev the engine a lot to get decent cruising speed. The K series engine drives with a very uniform acceleration. The Ertiga petrol revs up to 2500 rpm on the highways and has a very decent fuel economy. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga petrol manages to go from 0 to 100 kmph in just 13.3 second which is much better than the best MPVs around the Indian car market. The top speed of the Ertiga is limited to 170 kmph and is very quick around the corners.
Maruti Suzuki has mated this multi-jet engine with a five speed manual gearbox transmission. The vehicle has shortened gearing which makes it easier for the car to run under the 2000 rpm mark. But due to the lack of power it causes a bit of problem when driving in the city through its busy traffic. Although it produces less power than the Innova but the better power to weight ratio works perfectly well in the real world.
Ride and Handling
There have never been any complaints with respect to the comfort and ride quality of any of the Maruti Suzuki vehicles. Since the car has been designed on the Ritz and Swift model the vehicle has extremely good ride quality and offers the driver a lot of confidence. The engineers at Maruti have worked tirelessly to provide you with a high quality and comfortable ride.
The car has a very clearly defined suspension layout. The front houses independent wishbones with MacPherson struts type links which come with long and soft spring and the rear has anon-independent beam axle which comes with the torsion beam technology. The suspension system works very well to provide one a comfortable and memorable ride without causing any problems to the driver or the co riders.
The ride and comfort quality of the Ertiga are much better than any other MPVs and the car feels quite decent around the roads of our country. The small length of the car helps it in tackling the busy traffic of India and the muscular feel helps in avoiding other riders on road. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga sports thin 165/65 R15 tubeless tires and is not at all comfortable. Tackling potholes is very difficult, due to its thin tires. But the long wheelbase helps in sustaining the longitudinally transferred weight on the tires. But Ertiga also experience a good amount of body roll when it corners at high speeds.
In the handling area too, the car is very much like the Ritz and Swift. The electronically powered steering feels too light and has a very vague position around the center. But as the speed increases the steering feels more comfortable and the vehicle offers a tight grip when travelling at mod range to high speeds.
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has decent braking quality. The vehicle comes with Disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The Ertiga is well-equipped with ventilated disc brakes at the front and the rear tires have been designed with drum brakes. The car stops dead in a very short distance and the brakes work well on all road conditions. The car comes to a complete standstill from a 100 kmph in just 51 meters for which it takes only 3.9 seconds.
Fuel Economy
The Indian car manufacturer is not new to this country and understands the mentality of Indian people very well. The engineers at Maruti have worked hard on keeping the economy high without compromising on performance.
The petrol engine in the muscular body of the Ertiga works very well to lower its economy a bit. It is definitely not great but it is also not that bad and offers 16 to 18 kmpl on highways. This was when the vehicle was run with air conditioning switched on and seven people onboard.
The diesel version on the other hand houses a lighter engine which has although not increased the performance but really set standards with its economy. The diesel variant offers a fuel economy of 14 kmpl in highways and 12 kmpl in the cities.
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is a spectacular looking Multi-Purpose vehicle and undoubtedly the most elegant and muscular in its segment. The car will find buyers among the people looking for mid segment and economical MPV and also among the people who wish to go on family trips every now and then. Under the bonnet, the Ertiga packs powerful petrol and a diesel engine which has brilliant loading capacity.
The car has been very elegantly designed with an eye on the comfort and safety of not only the driver but the fellow travellers too. It has some flaws like its lack of boot space and completely plastic interiors. But, the car also has some big advantages like comfortable seats, moderate pricing and a really good fuel economy.
Maruti Suzuki has struck the right chord for a vehicle. One may call it a SUV, MPV or MUV but it is absolutely delightful. With its extremely low pricingand high fuel efficiencyone can be sure that it will be anoption everyone will consider while looking for a budget MPV. The cost of the Maruti Suzuki also sets it apart from the other cars in its segment. The base petrol variant starts off at an ex-showroom price of rupees 6.23 lakhs in Mumbai. The spectacular diesel version will cost rupees 7.71 lakhs and the top end variant the Ertiga ZDi will touch the price of rupees 8.88 lakhs.
