Hyundai New Sonata

Hyundai Sonata Premium Saloon Loaded with Gizmos

The fluidic design theme has worked very well on Sonata and it comes with acres of cabin space but we do miss a diesel model.

ecardlr.com National

Hyundai hopes to emulate the success of first generation Sonata (2001) with the latest model of this car and it has worked well with the new fluidic design concept. While the original model had luxury car buyers queuing up for the Sonata, the subsequent ones did not cause much stir in the market. But once again, the Korean car maker has done its homework for some serious business in this segment. The fluidic design gave Verna its stunning looks and it has been incorporated for the upmarket luxury saloon too.
Ecardlr takes a closer view of the stylish and feature rich Sonata to check out what exactly is impressive about this Hyundai saloon
The New Sonata, called the i45 Sonata internationally, does look stunning with its latest design features. Look at the nose and you will notice the sleek channels out-flowing from the base of the front grille towards the elongated headlamps. With a raked windscreen and curvy roofline, the cabin silhouette rises and falls softly. The sharp crease on the sides passes through the door handles and there’s another down below - between the front and rear wheel arches. All this makes for the fluidic styling. The ORVMs are electrically adjustable though they do not fold automatically when the car is locked /unlocked.
This rich saloon looks even more alluring at its rear. All the lines that emanate from the front converge at the back to meet the beautifully detailed tail lamps. The boot has almost perfect proportions that look pleasing. It comes with volume of 523 litres.
The entire form of New Sonata conveys a feel of movement and even if this sedan is not as gorgeous as the model we had in 2001, it will certainly turn heads. The car will be admired for its wonderful styling and ample road presence.
Get inside the cabin and you will be pleased to see that this new model does look much better than its predecessor. There is a large glass area to give you good field of view. The driver’s and front passenger’s seats are neatly segregated by the centre console and a broad arm-rest. Thanks to its wheelbase of 2795 mm, Hyundai New Sonata has a very spacious cabin and there’s ample legroom & headroom even if you have tall people sitting on all seats.
The seats too offer comfort that is expected from a sedan in this class. While the driver’s seat can be power adjusted for an ergonomic driving position, the one for front passenger is manually adjustable. An admirable feature is in form of ventilated seats. There are controls to individually heat & cool your car’s seats – the automatic variant has this for both front and rear but the one with manual transmission gets the luxury for rear seats only.
The black & beige steering wheel has its upper and lower arcs clad in leather – other parts are in rubber and plastic. It looks stylish, has a comfortable grip and can be adjusted for rake and reach. The wheel also gets integrated buttons for audio control, Bluetooth telephony on the left and tripmeter, cruise control on the right.
Black glossy material with chrome touches gives the dashboard a very smart look. The car also has a reverse camera system with video display on central rear view mirror.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
The 2.4 litre petrol engine is refined, smooth and churns out a power of 198 bhp at 6300 rpm but it still does not feel as powerful as these numbers reflect. It takes time to rev up the motor and things get frantic only after 4000 rpm. The engine sounds a bit harsh past this and although the refinement is good enough, the motor is not very smooth at high rpm.
Sonata 2.4 GDi M/T has 6 speed manual gearbox – the first three gears seem to be tuned only for city driving while the 4th, 5th and 6th are taller. You can reach 100 km/ hour in second gear and 150 km / hour in the third. The fifth and sixth gears are really tall and are meant to enhance fuel economy over long distance drives. Maximum torque comes with the 4th gear but the difference between the three ratios is rather academic again thanks to tall nature of each gear.
While the automatic transmission variant may be more convenient to drive, you obviously feel more in-control with the M/T model. In fact even if you choose the automatic variant, it is better to use the paddle shifters to remain in the preferred gear and driving in this mode is more pleasant. The 2.4 GDi M/T takes 9.6 seconds to reach 100 km / hour – this makes it one of the quickest cars in its segments.
Ride and Handling
The straightline stability of this saloon is good and the ride quality is also impressive but it does feel a little stiff on bumpy patches. Now, the Sonata is a big car and therefore Hyundai has fabricated independent suspension for both front and rear. The car uses McPherson with coil springs up front and a multi link rear suspension – it is stiffer sprung than Hyundai’s other offerings.
Unlike its sibling Verna, this one does not wallow and pitch when you drive it hard. Of course there is some body roll and the new Sonata is little lazy while cornering but then most people going for this car will not set lap times for a race track drive. What they will be particularly interested in is the ride quality and the saloon fares well in this category. Over good roads it is soft and plush and even though it tends to get little bouncy when the road conditions deteriorate, it is positively adequate and comparable with its Japanese rivals.
Fuel Efficiency
New Sonata 2.4 GDI M/T has a fuel economy range of 8 km/litre to 11.5 km/litre. The one with automatic transmission gives a meagre 7.5 km/litre in city and 10.3 km/litre on the highways.
Over the past few years, Hyundai has researched well into the preferences of Indian car buyers. The new Sonata once again is a characteristic Hyundai product – good looking, feature rich and with a pleasing ride quality. It is loved for the gizmos it comes loaded with and also scores high on safety. You get 6 air bags, antilock braking system and electronic stability control.  While it is not a very exciting car to drive, it will certainly attract buyers who value comfort and luxury more than driving pleasure.
