Force One Expert Review

The launch of Force – One was made in April 2011 with this began a new innings for Force Motors as it had now entered personal vehicles section. The only commercial vehicle manufacturing company now had something to prove to the country that its car had something worth its price. Though the sales didn’t go that well but Force Motor recently launched the EX version of the car (Earlier launched as SX and LX version only).

Force Motors founded by N. K. Firodia in 1958 as Firodia Tempo is an Indian manufacturer of three – wheelers, multi – utility vehicles (MUV), Cross Country Vehicles, known for light commercial vehicles it also manufactures tractors, buses and certain heavy commercial vehicles. It was named Bajaj Tempo for a brief period when Bajaj Auto bought major stakes of the company. One of the Germany’s Big Three, Daimler – Benz (Owner Of Mercedes) bought 16 per cent ownership of Bajaj Tempo because Firodia had beena long – time collaborator.

The company later held controlling stakes in its hand and gradually “Tempo” name was phased out and the company was named Force Motors in 2005.

The company has many vehicles to its name, which includes Force One and Force Gurkha (To be launched) in terms of personal vehicles, Commercial vehicles – Trax (SUV - PPV), Traveler (Indian Ambulance) and Trump 40. Since it also manufactures Tractors they include Balwan and Orchard Tractors. But the vehicle which the common man might have heard of is their commercial vehicle Matador (A brand too under Force Motors) which gave a name to the company. The Pune based company manufactures its own engine, chassis, gear boxes and axle for their lot of products adding to their novelty. The car comes at an asking price of 9.4 lakhs and ranges upto 14 lakhs in its three variants viz. EX, SX and LX (top - trim). The car invites a lot of competition with Ford Eccosport, Renault Duster, Mahindra Bolero and its major and immediate rivals – Tata Safari and Mahindra Scorpio.

Exteriors

The car has one of the finest exteriors in its segment with slight differences in each of the three variants. Like they wheels per se, the EX has 235/70 R16 Sheet Metal Wheels – High Way Pattern Tyre whereas the other two variants have Alloy wheels – SX has 235/70 R 16 All Terrain Pattern Tyre and LX has 245/70 R 16 All Terrain Pattern Tyre. The tyres are quite bug but it is this bulkiness which adds to the car’s looks. Also, the wheel base is large enough 3025 mm and helps maintain grip on road. Though the first thing that comes into notice is the cars size with a Length x Width x Height of 4.86 x 1.78 x 1.885 (all in meters). Pretty Huge ain’tit?

Not only this full chrome grille added to its beauty. The projector headlamp with LEDs running just below them looks great. The LX and SX variant have both front and rear fog lamps whereas only front in EX. The tail lamps with a spoiler at the tailgate provide a sporty look to it. There are body coloured front and rear bumpers which adds to the car’s magnificence. Body coloured door handles which are easy to grip look great and come with Puddle lamps as well as Aluminium side step which are slip resistant are a great addition to both looks and safety. The Outside rear view mirrors  support side indicators (in SX and LX variant only). The roof rails add a fresh look as well as serve as a luggage carrying machine very well. All in all the exteriors look great and provide a bit of Ford Endeavour like look.

The car comes in brilliant colours. All variants have their own set of colours.EX Variant comes in Intense White, Bold Black and Moondust Silver. The SX in Intense White, Bold Black, Fierce Red, Emphatic Grey and Robust Blue whereas the top of the line trim – LX comes in Silver colour only.

Interiors

The interiors of the car are great but not in tune with its price tag. The interior cabin section of the Force One SUV is has different seating arrangements for different variant which vary from six to nine but all look plush and spacious. The seats are well cushioned with premium leather upholstery. The company used beige color scheme to the cabin section to make it look plush and magnificent. The dashboard in the front row is well designed and there is a wooden finish on its centre console, which gives a classy feel to it. The Force One has been offered with several comfort features including multifunction steering wheel, 2-DIN music system with Bluetooth function (this sophisticated and multi - functional 2-DIN music system will provide a joyful driving experience), air conditioner with heater, progressive cruise control system, adjustable steer column, tachometer, leather seats, glove compartment, electrically adjustable ORVMs, reverse parking sensor and various others. All the three rows have been equipped with dual AC vents, which promise better ambience. The steering wheel has been wrapped in leather, and has audio control and Bluetooth connectivity switches. The gear shift knob too is wrapped in leather upholstery. The door panels have been equipped with power window switches for enhanced convenience. There are several other features  incorporated inside the car including arm rest, 12V power socket, mobile charger in second row and several others.

Engine, Transmission and Performance

The car’s three variants offer two types of engines. One is a TD 2650 FTI BS III, 4 – CyclinderDisel engine TCIC for EX variant and for SX and LX variant we have a TD 2200 FM Tech, BS – IV, 4 cylinder, 16 valves TCIC common rail Diesel engine.

BS – III Diesel Engine – churns out a maximum power of 82 PS at a rate of 3200 revolutions to the minute (maximum) and a maximum torque of 230 Nm in the range of 1800 rpm to the maximum of 2000 rpm and a displacement of 2650 centimeters cube (pretty high). The ground clearance of 145 mm is quite low.

The engine is sourced by Mercedes and the car moves smooth even at low rpms, though sometimes the gearbox might be some problem bit the overall picture is good. The engine here is mated to a five – speed transmission gearbox and due to its smooth performance its good on highways and citites.

BS – IV Diesel Engine – churns out a maximum power of 141 PS at a rate of 3800 revolutions to the minute (maximum) and a maximum torque of 321 Nm in the range of 1600 rpm to the maximum of 2400 rpm and a displacement of 2650 centimeters cube (pretty high). The ground clearance of 145 mm is quite low. The engine is derived from Mercedes under Daimler’s License. Certain parts of the engine were imported from Lotus sports car brand, Korea.

The car comes with a G32/5 synchromesh Overdrive Gear box, also made under license from Diamler AG, which allows smooth the change of gears as there will be no interruption to the flow of power. The car has a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox which is optimized for comfort, and a chromes bezel too for the gear knob yielding a sporty driving experience.

The Force Motor uses quite creative Dual Mass Fly Wheel (DMFW) Technology which offers smooth driving at low speeds and lesser vibrations in this high quality, low friction and high torque density gear box.

Ride and Handling

Force One is a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV)which has great ride and handling aspects. The suspensions used are great. The front suspension of the SUV is an Independent double wishbone with coil spring while the rear suspension is a multi-link with pan hard rod and coil spring. The car comes loaded with gas charged telescopic shock absorbers in both the front and rear areas and supports anti-roll bars in both the front and rear axle. The car will take you in and out of traffic and bumpy roads without you feeling a thing.

The car requires superior braking and handling mechanism to stop its mammoth like body. The Force has given us the same with front disc type – twin pot type caliper brakes and rear drum type – Simple Brake with LCRV. The company has given us one its best work and whixh resulted in a great handling aspect. These brakes work very well and better when they are mated to Anti-Lock braking system (in SX and LX variant) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution system (in LX variant only) in order to prevent locking in slippery roads. The car also features a power assisted steering system that provides instant and responsive results and makes driving easy in all conditions.

The company has given an utmost importance to the safety aspects of the Force One to ensure protection for passengers and for the vehicle as well but these features may vary variant to variant. Although the Tank like build quality is hardly to get damaged during collisions.  It comes with a lot of safety functions including ABS, EBD, collapsible steering system, central locking system, anti-theft alarm, child safety locks, day and night rear view mirror, seat belt warning, side impact beams, door ajar warning, adjustable seats, key less entry, automatic headlights, centrally mounted fuel tank, etc. Though the lack of airbags is noticed because of its high price tag and ESP is also missing. These certain add – on will lead to an even better car though it is still not a deal braker.

Fuel Economy

The Indian automaker has worked well on certain engineering aspects and given us this fuel efficient car. While the manufacturer claimed the figures to be 17 kilometres to the litre, the car has a capability to return an estimated mileage of 14 km / L in cities and roughly around 17 km / L on highways. The mileage is quite appreciable in comparison to its rivals, as many of such types struggle to give such a performance. Plus the addition of a 70 litre fuel tank which is great as it will reduce the occasional trips to the Fuel Refilling Stations.

Verdict

Well will it make its name in the SUV segment or will its name get faded like this? Will its name be darkened with the Taxi? No and definitely no. The car has a lot of Pros than cons. The car has great looks and the sporty aggression a SUV requires. The aerodynamics is well bought out. The interiors have all set of equipments which will or will not come in use, Similarly, the car has a lot of safety features as it is customary for companies to provide(Although these features may vary variant to variant). Though the lack of Airbags and ESP is there but not much comes into notice with the comfort of the seats and the chilling all three rows air – conditioning (dual AC vents on all three rows). Now the questions arise if the car has such great features and compared to its rival better specifications why does it lack fame?

The answer is quite clear, in this Era of brands like Toyota, Renault, Volkswagen, Tata, Mahindra, etc. people tend to forget small Indian brands like Force Motors though it has worked a great deal with Daimler AG Group (Mercedes – Benz). The car is 4 wheel drive (LX variant only) SUV with an Extra Large Size and great interiors and exteriors and comforts. You can wander off – roads with this car and hit some bumps too but you won’t feel a thing because of its great ride quality. Great Vehicle which is still to find fame but also a few additions won’t hurt. It’s like mobiles some buy Micromax (We look for certain additions here too) some go for only Samsungs’ and IPhones’ but on a more expensive scale.
