With the latest launch of the Sail, Chevy is set to make waves in the car market with their notchback sedan. To look at it, the Sail looks like the average car – not too wide or too long and the perfect size for city driving. The front end of the car looks identical to the hatchback which is popular in different markets. Where the backend or trunk of the car is concerned, it looks like most other vehicles on the market – for instance, the Swift Dzire or even the Indigo CS.  The Sail sedan is actually far better in proportions and more stylized compared to the Sail U-VA hatchback version. With a length of 4.2 meters, it is actually longer than its nearest competitor by 200 mm.

Exteriors

The Sail is a sedan class car and has a very aerodynamic body and presents a great silhouette.  The front end of the car has a bold design with a radiator grill with a unique design – dual ports are built in, making the design a classic.  High gloss matte finishing makes the grille stand out against much of the chrome treatments included in the rest of the design.  The grille acts as a foil for the headlights – a large and incandescent cluster which are fitted with high intensity bulbs.  Just below the grille is the front bumper which has an air dam with 2 fog lamps for good visibility during inclement weather and difficult road conditions.  The side profile of the car is well designed as well with flared wheel wheels and light alloy wheels.  All in all, the car offers a very sport look.  The wheels are 14 inch light alloy rims and require tubeless radials 175/70/R14 and offer a sturdy grip on the tarmac.  The side view mirrors are also beautifully designed with bulbs built in.  The rear of the car has bright taillights with the stop lamp mounted high for good visibility and a well designed rear bumper.  The windshield has embedded defogger technology.  A sleek, powerful antenna is mounted to the roof for good AM/FM radio and satellite programs.

The overall size of the Sail is very generous and can seat 5 people comfortably with ample leg room.  There is plenty of room left over for head and shoulder space – total length 4249 mm with a width of 1690 mm, including the side view mirrors.  The height of this sedan is 1503 mm and with a wheel base of 2465 mm, this sedan redefines comfortable.  It has a ground clearance of 168 mm and its turning radius is 10.3 meters.  Trunk space is 370 liters – the sedan weighs in at 1519 kgs and the fuel tank tops off with a 40 liter capacity, making it ideal for long drives.

Interiors

On the inside, the upholstery and other features are meticulously appointed with a focus on passenger comfort. Plush fabrics make the seats ultra comfortable and ample leg room, head and shoulder space make for a very comfortable ride. There is a lot of thoughtfully built in storage space with a center stack, map pockets on the front doors, cup holders built into the front console, pockets on the backs of the driver and passenger sets, large glove box for storage and other spaces to hold all kinds of items.

Interior lighting is pretty good too which only adds to the overall charm and urbanity of this vehicle. Interiors are all done up with chrome for added style and a definite up market look.  The steering wheel is clad in leather, as the gear shift. This sedan has a solid and well functioning a/c built in along with heating options. Front and rear windows are all powered through the electrical system making it comfortable for the driver as well as passengers.  Rear view mirrors can be adjusted with controls built in.  The trunk can be opened with the press of a button built in to the display console.  Luggage compartment lamps, vanity mirrors, cigarette lighter, digital display clock, rear defoggers and many other functions are standard features in this sedan.

Engine, Transmission and Performance

Buyers have two options to choose from – a 1.2 liter petrol and a 1.3 liter diesel engine.  The 1.2 SMARTECH engine is 4 cylinder/16 valves with an MPFI supply system.  It also has a DOHC built in and displaces 1199 cc to generate 85 bhp and 114Nm of torque at 500 rpm.  This engine works seamlessly with a 5-speed manual gearbox and offers 18.2 kmpl in regular driving conditions.

The diesel version with its 1.3 liter engine has turbocharge and 4 cylinders/16 valves.  The diesel engine is also equipped with SMARTECH technology with a sequential injection fuel system and dual overhead cam.  It also has a 5 speed transmission and offers an impressive 22.1 kmpl range – which is very attractive to the buyers.  Both engine types are compliant with the Stage IV emissions testing process, which is even better.

Here is a recap of the specs

Petrol: 1199cc, 85bhp, 113Nm, FWD, 5M, 1065kg
Diesel: 1248cc, 77bhp, 205Nm, FWD, 5M, 1124kg

Ride and Handling:

With the manual transmission in both versions, shifting gears is quite smooth and there is no need to fight the levers to get a better drive.  The quality of the ride in the Sail can easily be rated best in class – it does really well on all types of roads.  The steering mechanism is very responsive which helps with maneuvering in tight spots but not that great at higher speeds.  Overall, the handling is not that great and be aware of the tendency to roll.

Fuel Economy

This sedan is known for its fuel economy – the petrol version of the car delivers 15.9 miles in city driving and 18.3 kmpl on the highway.  The diesel version does much better and can be driven 18.9 kmpl in the city and 22.1 kmpl on the highway.  All in all, this is a good car to own and drive.

Reliability and Safety

The Chevy Sail has quite a few safety features built in making it easier to handle while driving.  Features include front seat 3 point safety restraint with pretensioners, driver and front passenger seat belt reminder, engine immobilizer, door open warning notifier, advanced ABS system combined with an electronic brake force distributor which enhances breaking efficiency of the car in wet and slippery conditions.

Trim on the sedan’s exterior has built in speed sensitive door locks which function in automatic mode, driver side airbag for added protection, side impact door beams, built in rear door child proof locks, dual horn, front passenger airbags for extra protection, safe cage body for the entire car and a lot of other great features.

Customers should be aware that the ABS and dual airbags are available in their top of the line Sail LT models.

Verdict

All in all, given all the features that are built in to the Sail diesel and petrol versions, it can easily be considered on e of the safest in the specific market segment. It is affordable and a decent looking car overall – it also offers decent resale value.  Aggressive pricing strategies will definitely help to catapult this sedan to the top of the car market.
