Audi R8 V10 Coupe

The 0-100 km/hour comes in just 4.4 seconds and the Quattro four wheel drive adds to the pleasure of being behind the wheel.

Maintaining a super car is not economical especially in India and it is usually the Bollywood celebrities or top sport stars who go for these royal beauties and stunning performers. But it is not just the on-road price and service costs that make supercars impractical – their low stance is not appropriate for the bulging speed breakers and they struggle amidst chaotic traffic while just inviting glares. Audi R8 V10 coupe is one such car launched in the sub-continent. And this Audi now comes with a facelift that has modified and optimised some of the external and cabin features. The R8 also gets a new 7 Speed automatic ‘box in place of its old 6 speed manual.

It’s a 5204 cc, direct injection petrol engine that drives the R8 V10 and sends power to all four wheels. It is mated to 7 speed dual clutch transmission. Want to know how it actually feels like? Here’s an in-depth review of the features and performance.
The R8 does look ravishing with its large bonnet and a sharply raked windscreen. The air dams are massive and along with the stretched hexagonal grille, they cover almost the entire area of the front bumper. Sitting right above the radiator grille are the four Audi rings on the bonnet’s edge. After its facelift, the R8 coupe gets newly designed, split headlamps optimised by LEDs. Broad wheel arches take in 295/30 R19 tyres. The smart, body coloured door wing mirrors have side turn indicator strips. Bigger side air intakes and more aggressive side sills add to aero-dynamism of this car. What's more, the arresting sheetmetal is fabricated from aluminium in order to minimise that performance sapping mass. The R8 coupe scales at 1620 kg.
     Stylish tail light

At the rear, the features that draw attention are the new elongated tail lamps, the air intakes, a sporty spoiler, and the large dual tipped diffuser with round outlets on both sides of the bumper.
Even though the standard R8 V10 Coupe is great in terms of looks and performs, there is a V10 Plus variant that gets distinctly devised alloy wheels, extra carbon fibre trim that has also been used for the distinct side blades, and black finish to the exhaust tips.
The suspension comprises aluminium double wishbone set up for rear and front with independent, adaptive magnetic dampers. There is a hydraulically assisted rack-and-pinion steering system and the steering wheel turning circle is 11.8m. Fabricated with steel and light weight aluminium, the Audi R8 Coupe scales at 1620 kg.
The cabin design of this two seater feels customised for a super car. So you get into a low slung driving position and windscreen ahead is steeply raked. The flat bottomed, three spoke steering wheel has a chunky grip and the pedals look large. A dead pedal is also provided. With its glossy metal finish, the stubby gear selector stalk has a sporty feel. There is 8 way power adjustment and 4 way power lumbar support for the front seats. Upholstered in fine Nappa leather, these seats are also heated for more comfort. The cabin rear view mirror and door wing mirrors are auto dimming. Dials on the hooded instrument console are housed in drop shaped casing and in between is the high resolution multi information display.
Audi R8 Leather Covered Steering Wheel

Audi R8 Coupe’s interiors look neat and sporty with matt silk black inlays. The tech rich and infotainment features include the multi media interface (MMI) that displays menu for Audi music system and satellite navigation plus. Bluetooth and iPod connectivity is standard. With B & O sound system, you can entertain yourself and your co-passenger to the fullest. But enthusiastic drivers behind the wheels of an R8 coupe won’t really need music or entertainment in this car. It’s just the pleasurable performance of that powerful V8 that they will look out for.
Automatic climate control, electronic cruise control, and hill start assist are other comfort/convenience features of this 2 seater coupe. Paddle shifters are provided. For safety the R8 V10 is equipped with four wheel ABS, electronic brake pressure distribution with brake assist, electronic stabilisation program and tyre pressure monitoring system. Seat belts’ automatic pretensioning with force limiters, adjustable headrests, dual stage front airbags, seat mounted side airbags and impact protection beams reduce the risk of serious injury in case of a collision. Car security attributes subsume central remote locking system, engine immobiliser and anti theft alarm.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
As you spark up the ignition, the R8 Coupe feels eager to go. It gushes into life hurriedly and then you hear the distinct rumble of the engine. Thanks to a large, steeply raked windshield the view ahead is clear and even if the car has a mid-engine layout, the visibility through the rear glass is also good. The 5.2 litre V10 engine will feel relaxed as you drive at low speeds within the city but again, this Audi is not meant to be driven through crowded streets. It is such a shame dragging it languidly on road when you know that there is 518 bhp on tap. But one thing is for sure, the R8 eagerly spins into life without any fuss and from the word go it has plenty of torque to please its driver.
So as we found an open road, we switch on to the Sport mode to make the most of this German beast. Now, the exhaust picks up a throaty sound and it becomes a scream as that powerful engine is revved up. The 0-100 km/hour comes in 4.40 seconds. And it is admirable the way this V10 engine builds up revs. You wont be bugged by any lag or delay – just ask for it and the performance comes in a very predictable and linear way.
Another thing to appreciate is the 7 speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. It grants this sports coupe a relaxed practicality that suits its excellent on-pace accuracy. The R8 V10 Quattro remains in Auto mode irrespective of the powertrain presets that you select. But then Audi also offers steering wheel column mounted paddle shifters with this version. On shifting to the manual mode the car will hold onto every gear and swap ratios on command with remarkable response and precision. And so that 0-100 km/hour time of 4.4 seconds is not surprising.
Ride and Handling
Most super cars feel intimidating while going up a curvy mountain road but so is not the case with the new Audi R8 V10. At corners the stiff suspension delivers the least body roll and the steering offers a good feedback. This car changes direction readily and the 295 section tyres provide a good grip but at times they do tend to hunt for slopes. With the four wheel drive Quattro set up the R8 feels planted even with changing road and wind conditions. There is a rear wheel bias in this system and so the bulk of power is transferred to rear wheels under normal, low speed driving conditions. At low speeds, the R8 is also very easy to manoeuvre. There’s some transmission shunt, but it’s not really bad. You will need to use the parking camera often to handle this car in cramped areas.

The nimble R8 seems very eager to change directions and its diver can take liberties to enjoy the performance to fullest. If your car does have the optional adaptive damping, it will judge the damping in Normal mode on most roads. While it does not offer saloon like comfort, it is not bad either. But on switching back to the Sport mode the ride quality deteriorates noticeably if you are driving on poor tarmac – so use this mode only on smooth, well paved, open roads.
With regards to braking, the drilled and ventilated petal discs, gripped by four-piston callipers front and rear, work like they are expected to work. The pedal remains solid for most of the time and the anti-lock braking is really unobtrusive. This Audi has the forte to come to a halt from 80 km/hour in 2.0sec.
Fuel Economy
A ten cylinder engine car will be a fuel guzzler and the Audi R8 V10 is no exception. It does not even have a fuel saving stop-start system. So the fuel economy range is only 3 km/litre to 5.5 km/litre.
A super car is not a practical vehicle to own and is meant to be driven only on well built tracks. The R8 V10 Coupe costs Rs 1.92 crore (ex showroom price Delhi) and the V10 Plus version has a tag of 2.23 crore (ex showroom price Delhi). Depreciation will hit it hard and service costs will always be enormous. But then if you really want to pamper yourself, it is more ‘affordable’ than a Lamborghini Gallardo and the performance no doubt is smashing.
