Audi A6

Audi A6 (Edition 3.0 TDI)

A6 is a gusty, nimble saloon that entertains you to the fullest between 2000 and 4000 rpm range.

ecardlr.com National

Positioned between the A4 and A7, Audi A6 has a good blend of almost all elements that one expects in a plush luxury car. Nice design & detailing, balanced proportions, aesthetically done interiors and cushy ride quality are some of its adorable traits. And then there is a large range of diesel and petrol variants to choose from. As per the engine size and set of equipment available, the price ranges between Rs 42.98 lakhs and 62.82 lakhs. There’s also the exclusive S6 4.0 TFSI that costs Rs 90.17 lakhs (all prices ex showroom Delhi).
Ecardlr brings out a comprehensive review of this German saloon along with its account of features and design elements. The variant tested for this review is the 3.0 TDI that is powered by 2967 cc V6 engine.
Carrying a low brooding stance, the new A6 comes with those typical Audi design cues. The slit eyed headlamps with LED daytime running lights give a touch of sportiness to this swanky saloon. The tightly cropped hexagonal grille and large air intakes on the sides of bumper are parts of its family looks. Built on Audi’s MLB platform, the A6 has an elegant coupe like profile with a sweeping roof and large rear glass area. The rear quarter glass in the new model is a carryover from its predecessor. Detailing on the door panels in form of swage lines is smart. Elongated split headlamps at the back also have LED inserts while the bumper bears a sleek look with rounded edges.
Audi used lot of aluminium bits in the fabrication of the new A6. The light weight metal is a part of bonnet, fender, doors and tail gate. Under the skin elements such as cross members, suspension towers and bulk heads also involve the use of light materials. Thanks to this strategy, the saloon now weighs 80 kg less than the previous generation A6. The result should be better performance, handling and fuel economy.
Another point that would interest driving enthusiasts is that the 3.0 TDI comes with Quattro – four wheel drive set up. With this it also gets the 60:40 rear bias. Adaptive air suspension and Audi Drive Select allow the driver to customise setting for dampers, steering and engine mapping.
The cabin is as pleasant as the attractive exteriors. Audi does impress with the material quality, fit & finish, refinement levels and new detailing features that adorn the interiors of A6. Wooden inlays on the dashboard and internal door panels have a smooth finish and give you the feel of being in the plusher A8.  There are raised dials on the instrument console and its neat shroud looks well defined on the layered dashboard. For the MMI screen that pops out in the centre (and stands atop the AC vents), you get touchpad controls on the centre console. The screen can be tucked back for a clean look on the fascia. Touches of brushed aluminium here and there also enhance the ambient appeal.
A wheelbase of 2912 mm translates into considerable legroom and the comfort is not only for rear seat passengers – the driver can easily find an ergonomic position behind the wheel. Electric adjustments for the seat and steering wheel are helpful features and there is memory function to record the best seating position for future use. The seats however are not very large and lack good thigh-support.  Headroom and shoulder room at the rear is adequate but if they were a tad larger, the seats at back too would have been comfortable by standards of a luxury car.
Audi A6 is well loaded with premium comfort and safety features. Thanks to a four zone climate control system, the driver and passengers can choose their own temperature settings in an optimally cooled/heated cabin. Keyless entry & go, parking sensors, electrically controlled sunroof are standard fitments. Entertainment system comprises CD/DVD changer, MP3 player with 20 GB hard drive. You can connect your iPod and other Aux / USB devices. Bluetooth connectivity is also standard. There is an electronically controlled air suspension with continual variable damping system on all four wheels. This is used to control ride height and damping in 4 modes (dynamic, automatic, comfort, lift) selected via the MMI Rough-road suspension.
Comprehensive set of safety features in the saloon include 6 airbags, electronic stability program, anti lock braking system, electronic brake pressure distribution, brake assist, and traction control. All wheel drive grip makes this car safer. Audi’s Pre Sense system activates essential safety systems when danger is sensed. Anti theft features like alarm and engine immobilizer are standard. You do not get stop-start or energy recovery system on the diesel car though – it has been offered only in petrol variants.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
The 3.0 litre V6 engine is thoroughly improved now with very low levels of internal friction. At idle, it is smooth and refined with no diesel jangle. It’s only the faintest of vibrations filtering through the bulkhead that are felt. As you lightly press on the pedal, the engine literally purrs. It is admirably responsive and lets you accelerate away from petrol almost like a swift petrol car but with lots of additional torque. And from here the power delivery is smooth and linear. An impressive 51 kgm of torque comes at 1400 rpm and so there is considerable pulling power even when the motor is revving at as low as 1200 rpm. There is a soft humming sound at moderate revs and you get that typical feel of driving a large-capacity V8.
The twin clutch, 7 speed automatic transmission is coupled nicely with the engine. Upshifts come quickly with a flick of the paddle shifters and the gearbox works well in manual mode to the pleasure of the driver. However, at cruising speeds, there is an initial lag experienced while downshifting – this does happen with twin-clutch systems and here’s where you miss a conventional torque converter-equipped auto. Nevertheless, the A6 TDI feels light to drive and has more gears to play with while also being powered by an engine that has wonderfully reduced levels of friction. The car can be driven with ease even in stop and go traffic.
And now for the performance – stunning it is! This car is quiet, gusty and very swift. Once the engine is revved past 2000 rpm, the A6 simply zooms forward and the speed stays consistent all the way up to 4000 rpm. After a quick upshift, you can enjoy the process again and it gets only more exciting. The 0-100 km/hour dash comes in 6.3 seconds and so the A6 is one of the fastest saloons in India. With power of 245 horses under the hood, overtaking is only a light tap of throttle away.
Its mid range is the strength of this V6 engine and the gush of power when you hit that spot in the rev band is fascinating. Audi A6 3.0 TDI is a driver’s car and if you have good roads to enjoy the real beauty of this saloon, it will be had to get off the steering wheel.
Ride and Handling
Thanks to its stiff chassis along with adjustable air springs and dampers, Audi A6 fares well in this section. In the Comfort mode the dampers set in well for a pliant ride. While the adaptive air suspensions helps in ensuring a cushy ride at almost all times, the 17 inch high profile tyres also add to the comfort of the privileged passengers. The 225/55-R17s have good cushioning against poor roads.
And so the A6 glides quietly with very little body roll. The low speed ride comfort is also admirable. You can drive over rough surfaces without feeling many jerks inside the cabin but large potholes do tend to cause a sharp thump. This otherwise luxurious saloon gets affected by vertical movement due to its short travel suspension and light weight. What is more upsetting is the considerable amount of tyre noise produced on bad roads. But this is a problem in all Audi cars including A7 and A8.
The Sport mode is more comfortable and usable for a really cushy ride. It is not hard-edged or bone jarring. Needless to say, the best of this car (like any other luxury saloon) will be offered on smooth surfaced roads.
Fuel Economy
The saloon manages to offer an economy of 9.3 km/litre within the city and up to 14 km/litre on the highways – this is appreciable for a large, loaded luxury saloon. The ARAI claimed fuel efficiency for the car is similar at 14.5 km/ litre.
A driver’s car with a fine blend of tech and luxury – the new Audi A6 is better than its previous version and the improvement came even though it still lacks some of the more efficient features used in Mercedes E Class and BMW 5 Series. So this Quattro diesel sedan is recommended for its performance and cabin comfort. There are three variants to choose from (Premium, Premium Plus and Technology) and the price for these ranges between Rs 55.49 to 62.82 lakhs (ex showroom price Delhi).
Comfort:  3.5/5
Refinement: 3.5/5
Safety: 4/5
Ride: 4/5
Handling: 4/5
Value for Money: 3.5/5
