Renault Captur vs Jeep Compass Road Test Comparison Review

Renault Captur is grabbing lot of attention of late and we thought to pit it against another recent blockbuster Jeep Compass. Here’s what we think.

Renault Captur vs Jeep Compass Road Test

Renault is grabbing lot of eyeballs with its recently launched Captur SUV. Jeep Compass, on the other hand, is also gaining traction in Indian market with each passing day. Both of these SUVs are new and evening for the same set of customers.

            Renault Captur

While Renault is emphasising on design and style with Captur, Jeep is bragging the tough and powerful credentials of the Compass. We are also receiving lot of enquiries about both of these new cars and that's why we thought to pit both of these propositions against each other in this road test comparison review. Read on to find which one wins and which one loses out.

Design, Style and Interiors

Squared wheel arches and dropping roofline

The new Jeep compass has all the road presence and thanks to the design inspiration the engineers have taken from luxury Grand Cherokee, the compass is in League of its own. The seven-slot grill up front looks very demeaning and is the highlight of the exterior design. Rest of the styling is on par with the norms and you will get body colored bumpers, outside rear view Mirrors, and design options in the wheel to choose from.

                  Exquisitely styled; demands attention
                                              Exquisitely styled; demands attention

From the design viewpoint, Renault Captur looks more premium and has got a special kind of appeal to it. Its contemporary lines wrapped up in a taut and chiseled body invoke the premium feeling and thanks to the stylish headlamps upfront, the Renault Captur does demand your attention.

            Plush cabin and quality interiors
                                                   Plush cabin and quality interiors

Step inside the cabin and you will be pleasantly surprised by the quality, the ambience, and overall equipment the Jeep compass has on offer. It is even more commendable when we take into consideration the price of the compass and the real reason behind this is the fact that Jeep manufactures compass in India. The dashboard is made up of soft-touch plastic and although the touchscreen seems a bit small and not the best responsive unit we have witnessed, the overall coming together of the touch panel and controls is quite admirable. The top of the line variant comes with luxury leather seats and offers quality equipment to pamper the occupants.

          Average quality interiors though spacious
                                       Average quality interiors though spacious

The thing that is going in favor of Renault Captur is its form factor and the newness aspect is going to be a big draw for this French flair. However, look closely and you’ll find deep under the skin the things are loud, glossy, and of mediocre quality.  The sophistication of Jeep Compass is thoroughly missing in the Renault Captur.

Engine, Transmission & Driving Dynamics

2.0-liter diesel and 1.4-liter petrol motor

Under the Hood, Jeep compass comes with the option of powertrains it comes with - 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine and 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine. While the former is capable of putting out 162 PS and 250Nm, latter is good for 173 PS and 350 Nm of max power and max torque respectively. One has the option of a six-speed manual with both engine choices while the petrol has also get 7-speed automatic transmission convenience.

            1.5-liter dCi diesel motor
                                                                   1.5-liter dCi diesel motor

Renault, on the other hand, has used a 1.5-liter dCi diesel engine in the highest rate of tune under the hood of the Captur and the diesel motor makes 110 PS and 245 Nm. The 1.5-liter petrol, on the other hand, is capable of producing 106 PS along with 142 Nm of output. In terms of transmission, diesel motor come mated to 6-speed manual transmission while petrol has got 5-speed manual gearbox.

           Jeep Compass better handler
                                                            Jeep Compass better handler

There is absolutely no doubt about the performing nature of jeep compass which outshines the Renault captur by huge margin. Not only the Jeep feels more powerful but it is also more drivable of the two. There is less need to shift the gears in Jeep compass and the company has done a good job in curbing the turbo lag in the lower power band. Renault too has made a successful attempt at providing good low-end grunt but the thing is that it doesn't feel as powerful and rugged as Compass. We have also found the transmission mechanism of jeep compass slicker and more Aspiring than Renault. However, on the ride quality, Renault Captur claws back its lost ground and occupants will be more comfortable in the Renault then Jeep. But when it comes to the handling department, jeep triumphs Renault by quite a margin. Overall in the mechanical hardware and driving dynamics, we feel jeep compass has slight edge over Renault Captur.

Overall Verdict

On the value for money, Renault Captur has dominated edge over the Jeep Compass as it starts at a lower price at Rs 10 lakh compared to Compass’s Rs 15.16 lakh (both prices, ex-showrrom, Delhi). It is also better styled and comes with good ride quality for occupants’ comfort. However, if you can stretch your budget and not looking for the cheapest possible option, the Jeep compass is the SUV to go for. It has all the muscles of a jeep brand, gets premium interiors, powered by very capable and performing set of engines, and drives like nothing short of a dream. It is also better equipped of the two and gives you the pleasure of driving the iconic Jeep brand.
