VW Tiguan Premium SUV Road Test Review

VW has launched its new Tiguan SUV in India at a rather high price point of Rs 28.93 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). We get behind the wheels and here’s what we think about it.

VW Tiguan Premium SUV Road Test Review

Volkswagen India has recently launched its premium Tiguan SUV in India amid much fanfare. This is thesecond attempt of the German automaker in the SUV space of Indian automobile industry and the company is confident that this time it has got what it takes to win over very choosy Indian customers.

            VW Tiguan

Like all other Volkswagen prepositions, Tiguan is pricey in nature with its top of the line variant priced alongside the much bigger Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. Compared to these two propositions, Volkswagen Tiguan lacks in the sheer size and bulk but still it makes up with long feature list and excellent build quality. Further Volkswagen has made sure that interiors are made up of best quality and fit and finish as usual is best in class. So how this new Tiguan stacks up against the competition and whether you should get your money on this sophisticated new SUV; we find out in this road test review.

Design, Style and Interiors

The look of new Tiguan SUV can be best described as understated and sophisticated. It comes with hallmark German design and engineering which means there is no nonsensical approach to the overall layout of the design. The frontage of the car looks understated however it is very attractive from design point of view. Projector type headlamps flanking the double slated grill give the Tiguan wide stance. In the profile, there is a clean shoulder starting from the front muscular fender going all the way up and merging into the tail lamps give this SUV some dose of character. At the back, wraparound tail lights have nice detailings to them and the steeply raked windscreen complete the designing part. Subtlety mounted roof rails also feels nice as they try to add some zing to the otherwise understated SUV. Overall Volkswagen Tiguan legs in the bulk and sheer Road presence but it has the capacity to win you over with its Elegance and sophistication.

                VW LED Rear Tail Light

Inside the cabin, VW has done damn a good job as everything feels very rich and luxurious. The company has adopted all black colour scheme inside which feels a bit dull in the daylight however in the night when ambient lighting is on, the car atmospherics is beyond any comparison. There is a long list of features that the company has offered which includes automatic climate control, airbags, anti-lock Braking System with electronic brake force distribution, Hill Descent control, sunroof, electrically operated outside rear view Mirrors coma electrically powered driver seat with memory setting etc. The car comes with the large touch screen infotainment system which although lacks the inbuilt navigation system but doubles up as a monitor for rear view camera once you slot the gear into the reverse mode.

              VW Tiguan Boot Space

The seats are genuinely comfortable and there is ample amount of questioning both at front and at the back. Volkswagen has provided electrically operated front driver feet which also come with the memory settings. The controls are very handy and operate in very intuitive manner. Unlike the many other SUV is in this segment, Volkswagen Tiguan comes only with two rows of seats. The rear bench is also very much comfortable and it's wide enough to seat 3 adults abreast without causing any discomfort. We also get impressed with the cooling capacity of Tiguan as the AC turns out to be very powerful. Boot space is also very genuine and once you fold down the second row, the space become humongous in nature.

Engine & Transmission

The Tiguan comes with a single option of 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine putting out 143 HP and 340 Nm of max Power and max torque respectively. The engine is mated to the 7-speed DSG automatic transmission which is very much smooth in its operation and fuel efficient too. We never felt lack of power at any point in time but the thing is that at this high price point, the people are expecting more power and performance. The refinement levels are quite impressive even when car is pushed hard and engine is extended. The 7-speed automatic transmission is smooth in its operation and most of the times, behaves in sensible and accurate manner. It's only when you get erratic in your inputs, it feels a bit disconnected.

VW Leather Wrapped Gear Shift Knob

Like other Volkswagens, Tiguan also comes with sensible ride and handling characteristics. There is underlined firmness to the suspension settings but the capability with which Tiguan rounds off the bumps of the road is commendable credit must go to the toll profile tyres for absorbing the bumps in a decent manner. This also allows the driver to Cruise on the Highways at a decent speed without worrying much about stability and poise of the car.

Overall Verdict

It will be quite a task for the Volkswagen to sell the Tiguan in India largely because of its steep price. This SUV legs the dominance and the road presence of other premium offerings although it costs as much as what is asked by Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. But in isolation, VolkswagenTiguan is not a bad buy. It comes with load of luxury features and quality of interiors is cut above the rest. There is sufficient space for the 5 passengers cargo space is good too. It is unlikely to become a sales chartbuster for the Volkswagen but still for the few selected ones who swear by the build quality and robustness of the Volkswagen are going to like it very much. The only thing we wish Volkswagen had considered before launching the Tiguan in the market is the price which is definitely on the higher side of the spectrum.
