Vista D90 Adrenaline Rush at Affordable Cost
Tata Motors adds the 90 Hp engine under Vista's hood, re-badges it as Vista D90 and gives it buyers a hot-hatch that really hot to drive. Vista D90 is the new hot hatch in premium hatch back segment, targeting those looking for some excitement in their life.
Vista D90 - The New Rocket from Tata Motors
Hatchback segment in India has really come of its age and the ever-lasting quest of companies to lure the customers has actually made it fiercely competitive. Hatchback have grown by leaps and bound in last 10 years. Out of the total 2 million passenger vehicles being sold in India close to 50% of them are hatchback. Premium hatchbacks have seen geometric growth since 1998 and it also happens to be the most crowded category with close to 12 models jostling for a pie of that market
No wonder dogmas and primitive notions that once defined the hatchbacks as a small, cramped and downright cheap mode of transportation have been buried deep down under and every new launch in this space has only redefined and fine-tuned it even further.
Emergence of niche related to performance hatchbacks is indicator of one such radical change which shows how discerning the customers of this segment have become now. Germans kicked off this performance segment with its sleekly styled 1.6 L Polo with an early following of Skoda’s unyielding Fabia. Hyundai fired its salvo in form of i20 while Punto90 is unfurling the flag for Italians.
Now Tata Motors has joined this elite group as Vista has been launched with 90 hp under its hood. Tata motors with this new variant is aiming to infuse some fresh blood to ailing Vista range which has been going through rough time of late. But whether Vista D90 has got it all to enable it to get back to chart of top selling models? We, at eacrdlr, answer this question through our comprehensive road test of new Vista D90.
VISTA D90 - EXTERIORS
There are no cosmetic changes that have made their way to the exterior body of the Vista. Vista retains its front face design similarity with its elder sister; Manza. Chrome slated smiling grill feels up market and so are the triple-optics head lamps. Centre crease line on hood is a nice touch along with accents of chrome which actually makes it somewhat desirable.
Side profile of the Vista D90 looks balanced without any unaligned overhangs. Slim pillars and belt line merges well with the overall design theme though the window line could be a bit lower. New contrast roof not only looks nice but feels classy also.
Rear features the same long upward-stretched vertical tail lamps which has become a synonym with Tata’s brand. Glossy black strip across the body is another clever detail used to further the style quotient of car. Further there is a body kit on offer which also includes side skirts and rear spoiler. All in all there is hardly any change on outside and Vista 90 looks exactly similar to its small heart variant.
VISTA D90 - INTERIORS
The thing which has attracted a lot of criticism from most of the people was the central instrument panel inside the old Indica. Finally company has listened to the clamour and Vista 90 gets its instrument cluster back to the place where it should have been in the first place, i.e behind the steering wheel. The driver information system (DIS) retains its central location and displays lots of important and necessary for the driver.
Interiors are wrapped in black and beige plastics while seats are full fabric in D90 variant. Plastics feels hard-wearing though still fails to entice any luxury quotient. Fit-finish has significantly improved and seats also gained in support.
Top variant ZX+ got the touch screen multimedia system with audio navigation feature in addition to playing the music stuff and Bluetooth connectivity. Another important feature is climate control HVAC unit which is again standard in top end variant. USB and aux-in are other useful features which effectively enhances the overall utility quotient of cabin.
Front seats have got some extra support though bolstering could be better. 6-way height adjustable setting is nice touch especially because of the hindrance caused by long hood of Vista. Rear bench is still the best in the class and except the Liva there is no other contender that can give Indica or this new Vista D90 any competition when it comes to rear seat comfort. Three fully size adults can sit without complaining even on long distance. At a squeeze even a small child can fit on the rear bench.
VISTA D90 - ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE
Here we come at the meat of the slice. Power plant which still displaces 1248 cc puts out an impressive 90 PS of power. Torque has also been marginally upped by 10 Nm with final figure of 200 Nm. The variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) has been used in place of fixed geometry which upped the power output from 75 PS figure to 90 PS. All these figures are very impressive on paper though in reality we didn't feel Vista as a very sinewy and wiry.
It has the excellent drivability though the mi- range responses are still not up to the mark. You have to shift to low gear if you want to make quick progress. After the full response of the turbo comes, then only it feels that the Vista has that extra punch. In fact Vista 90 performance has been very similar to Punto 90 which also takes its time to give you the pleasure of the extra horses. Instead of sudden outburst which takes at higher rev range, it would be far more enjoyable if tuning of the power delivery had been done on linear side.
Gear box has 5-speed transmission and shifts are definitely improved. Clutch has become light while brakes also seem effective. Steering is a bit heavy though it has the feel better than electronic units.
VISTA D90 - SUSPENSION AND DRIVING DYNAMICS
Suspension hardware of the older model has been carried over as new version continues to use McPherson strut with coil spring up front and rear semi-independent twist beam at the rear. D90 model comes 14” of wheels shrouded with 175 mm wide rubber and aspect ratio of 65.
Ride comfort of Vista has been its prowess and D 90 is no different. It has extremely absorbing ride with no intrusions filtered into cabin at any point of time. Even on the driving seat you will remain unfazed irrespective of the condition of the tarmac.
Handling of Vista D90 is still average and there are apprehensions about its ability to take sudden manoeuvres confidently. Grip level though is decent but tends to fade on when darted along corners. At its best Vista D90 is average handler and wanted to be driven in sedate manner.
VISTA D90 - OVERALL VERDICT
D90 version starts from Rs 6 lakh and goes up to Rs 6.83 lakh for ZX+ variant (ex-showroom, Delhi). Without any doubt Vista D90 makes a strong case of value for money and way cheaper than its counterparts competing in the same category. The variant has got extra power though you really need to work upon the motor to extract that additional punch. New features like climate-control, touch screen audio system with navigation, facility of USB and aux-in has really made Vista D90 a serious contender to think about. A feature loaded car which is a key reason for brand purchase for buyers of premium hatch. They are and want to be pampered with features. So if you are looking for spacious and powerful hatch with affordable price tag, Vista D90 could be the right choice for you.
