Toyota Yaris Review, Road Test

Toyota Yaris has its work cut out as this Honda City rival has lot riding on its broad shoulders. We put it through its paces to find out how good it is?

Toyota Yaris Review, Road Test

Toyota India has been missing from the action since it launched new Innova Crysta and Fortuner in the Indian market. However, the company was again in the Limelight at the 2018 Auto Expo where it showcased its midsize Sedan Contender, the Yaris to the visitors. Subsequently, Toyota Yaris made its Indian debut on April 25 when the company announced its prices ranging between Rs 8.75-14.07 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

         Toyota Yaris Review Road Test

Toyota Yaris has its work cut out in the intensely competitive three-box Salon segment where the likes of Honda City, Maruti Ciaz, and Hyundai Verna are strongly holding on their respective territories. Digging in heels here is not going to be an easy task and whether the new Toyota Yaris is capable of making its mark, we find out in this road test review.

Style and Design

yaris Raked A pillar and sloping roofline
Placed alongside with its competitors, Toyota Yaris feels a bit small dimensionally as its length, wheelbase, and height are less than the rivals though in the cabin width, it matches the widest Maruticiaz. The design follows Toyota's new language and the Yaris looks like a mini Corolla. High set headlamps sweep around the sides and the aggressive black air damn infuses the character in the overall styling. In the profile, 15" wheels feel a bit small but the decision has been taken considering the road condition and importance of fuel efficiency for the Indian buyers. The A-pillar is steeply raked and the flowing roof mergers well into the rear. The rear of the car is attractive too and the wraparound tail lamps and reflectors down the bumper cleverly consume the bulk and save it looking drab.

Interiors and Space

IN Inside the cabin, the Toyota Yaris follows typically Japanese functional approach with the high quality of interiors belt around the driver. Once again, the inspiration from the larger Corolla is instantly evident here. The layered dashboard is made of good quality plastic and there is plenty of spaces to adjust your knick-knacks throughout the cabin.

Quality cabin with lot of storage space
Quality cabin with lot of storage space

The steering wheel is a Chunky unit and features audio and telephony controls and high-set 7.0" touchscreen infotainment system with first-in-class gesture control features prominently in the equipment list. The two-tone Interior colour scheme also helps to free up more space which takes us to the important dimension of comfort and convenience. Front seats are genuinely comfortable and come with a good bolstering. At the back, the feeling is a mixed bag as there is a good amount of legroom and Shoulder room but the headroom is at a premium, specifically for the frames extending 6-feet thanks to the coupe-like profile of the car.

            First-in-class roof mounted AC vents

Toyota has provided the first-in-class roof mounted AC vents which is the Nifty touch and definitely add to the comfort of the rear passengers. The boot space of 476-litre is the smallest compared to the Rivals still, it is good enough to carry weekdays luggage and should one need more room, the rear seat split in the 60:40 ratio for extra trunk area.

Engine, Transmission & Performance

The new Toyota Yaris comes with a single option of 1.5-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine putting out 107 PS and 140 Nm of Max Power and max torque respectively. The engine is extremely refined and silent and once doors are shut, the Cabin becomes extremely hush without any kind of sound intrusions from the outside. The part of credit also goes to acoustic and heat insulating glass which helps in making the cabin silent and noise free.
       Petrol Engine

This gasoline motor can be easily described as a sedate unit which doesn't like to be hurried. As long as you keep your foot gentle on the accelerator, Toyota Yaris will not disappoint you. It makes light work of the city traffic and extremely confident 6-speed manual transmission with short throws adds to the overall package.

7-Speed CVT gearbox

There is no perceptible lag and enough power is available even lowdown the RPM levels. Even the mid-range is good enough to make all the highway and overtaking maneuvering quite simple and effortless but do not expect the strong wave of torque that is a characteristic feature of turbocharged engines. With a focus on the fuel efficiency, Toyota has tuned the engine to extract the most on the mileage. Along with 6-speed manual transmission, the company is also offering a 7-speed CVT gearbox which likes the manual one preface to get driven sedately. Yes, the typical rubber band effect is present here and one can discern while the shifts go up and down but there is no denying of the convenience of automatic especially in heavily congested city traffic. What is even more convenient is the paddle shifters which are very useful while nipping in and out of the traffic.

Ride, Handling, and Equipment

The ride quality is absolutely tailored according to Indian roads and the Toyota Yaris does a good job of insulating the passengers from the road condition. Even at the slow speeds, rear passengers will be comfortable and not feel even the worst of the roads. The handling capabilities of Yaris can be best described as an average and although it goes around the corner predictably well, it is by no means an enthusiast's car.

7” touchscreen with first-in-class gesture control

In terms of features and equipment, Toyota Yaris is a thoroughly equipped car. It has got many first in class features including 7 safety airbags, touchscreen infotainment system with gesture control, roof mounted AC vents, front and rear parking sensors, hill start assist control, tyre pressure monitoring system, auto headlamps, and reverse camera parking system. You also get advanced safety features like vehicle stability control, Anti-Lock Braking System, electronic brake force distribution, and brake assist as a part of a complete package in the Toyota Yaris.

Verdict

It is beyond doubt that Toyota Yaris is a very capable car which ticks all the right boxes. It can be rightly described as a jack of all trades but master of none. Without emotionally involving the driver, the Toyota Yaris is capable of completing the entire task adequately well. It looks good, comes with quality interiors, has got a refined and fuel efficient engine, right side handles well, and is backed by the solid reliability of Toyota brand. The only soaring point is the lack of headroom at the back which could be an issue for taller people. Also the price range, especially the top model seems to be on the higher side which strips it from bragging the rights of value for money.
