TATA NANO 2012: CHANGED FOR THE BETTER
Perseverance Pays and no other brand can lay claim to this fact more than the Nano. The hype, expectation, love and welcome the car received from patriotic Indians was unbelievable. But unfortunately, minor product mishaps, blown out of proportion by media, did take a toll on a car which had made the world take notice of it. A sub $3000 car was unthinkable even by the world’s leading car manufacturer but an Indian car maker could do that and that too quite successfully.
Nano was a revelation, as a car it was no less to any other car in terms of; Space, excellent ingress-egress, class leading fuel efficiency with surprisingly low maintenance cost and to top it all an amazingly low price. The world did salute it forcing leading car manufacturer to rethink their entire product strategy.
If one was to list companies that pays close attention to consumer feedback, then in all probability, Tata Motors will feature very high in that list. Nano 2012 is a result of such close ears to the ground. We drive it to get you the full review:
STYLE & SUBSTANCE
Like the previous model, new Nano has a large smiling front fascia with chunky bumper. An asymmetrical clear lens headlamp, subtle & useful side air vents along with small wheels keeps Nano’s desirability intact.
Upward swooping door lines on Nano’s side profile with large glass area, cleverly communicates Nano’s roominess and the magic of excellent ingress-egress.
Large rear windscreen, vertical tails lamps whilcts retains Tata Motors Barnd indentity, but make the car very upright which does not blend with overall curvy design of the car. Externally 2012 Nano hasn’t changed much from its previous avatar except for the wheel covers and the much needed passenger side Outside Rear View Mirror (ORVM).
INTERIORS, SPACE & ERGONOMICS
In contrast interiors definitely have undergone dramatic change in things and must admit it’s for the car’s betterment. Step inside and whole new beige color scheme with silver finished centre console will pleasantly surprise you. No more does one feel the excessive usage of the cost scalpel on Nano 2012. Scoops provided on the dashboard are very useable for carrying all your necessary stuff with new deep door packets adding to their utility.
Instrument cluster is integrated with center console. The lay-out features a very basic design with speedometer, odometer & fuel status display. Provision for music system sits below A/C, which in-fact provides very decent cooling.
Rear seat, as in previous model, is wide and very comfortable with good amount of leg and knee room. Seat contouring is better than the previous and this translates to more cushioning for the passengers adding to overall comfort.
POWER PLANT & TRANSMISSION
Nano 2012 gets a revised power plant, even though with the same capacity (624 cc) delivering 38 Ps power (3 horses extra over its previous avatar). The torque at 51 Nm is almost the same as the previous Nano. The twin cylinder MPFI power plant in the Nano 2012 feels agile and eager. Engine vibrations are under control, with almost Zero humming noise. Add to this the smooth shift quality of 4 speed transmission makes the New Nano 2012 a very different and pleasurable car to drive.
Nano’s elevated driving position and all-round visibility makes it a breeze to drive in the city traffic though power-steering along with more effective brakes (Disk) would have added greatly to cars convenience and safety.
Nano 2012 comes with tweaked suspension which aids steering inputs. Steering of nano 2012 does not feel as heavy to operate like the earlier Nano. Front uses McPherson struts while rear uses the semi trailing arm to suspend the wheels.
Even on 12” wheels, Nano 2012 rides surprisingly well. Straight line stability is good but not very supple with increasing speed. Bumps are well absorbed but grip level is limited due to narrow tyres.
Handling is just about average. It rolls around corners but then gets its composure quickly back. Small dimensions definitely works in Nano 2012’s favour as the car does not go out in alarming way.
Engine upgrades in Nano 2012 has made the Nano even less thirsty. It now delivers an amazing ARAI certified figures of 25.4 Km/ ltr making it the most fuel efficient hatchback on Indian roads.
Tata Motors thankfully has not tinkered with the cars pricing which is the icing on the cake.
