We first witnessed Tata Hexa at 2015 Geneva Motor Show and subsequently at our own Auto Expo in 2016. No doubt it is one of the most important projects for our home-grown auto major who is struggling to get it glorious days back and once again become one of credible manufacturers in Indian automotive industry. With Hexa, Tata has taken a giant Leap Forward which is sure to come to its 8 and not only making the brand of market but also to instill the confidence of buyers back on the Tata brand. Tata Hexa is based upon Aria crossover which didn't make it big in the Indian market because a variety of reasons, being costly was the prominent one.

The company has learned from its mistake and priced Hexa very competitively with base variant starting at Rs 11.99 lakh. The share amount of space and long list of equipment are among the main highlights of the Hexa as it looks forward to win over the Indian buyers. We were patiently waiting for Hexa to arrive to the showrooms and once it happened, we get behind the wheels to bring you this exhaustive and comprehensive road test review of this new Tata.

Design, Style, and Interiors

Tata Hexa crossover is based upon slow-selling Aria though Tata has made enough efforts to make it look and feel entirely different. It is underpinned by same chassis and suspension and even similar powertrain and transmission. Indian home grown auto major in confident that this MPV will strike a chord with the customers and going by the response to the company’s latest prepositions, this enthusiasm is not entirely misplaced.

Tata Hexa is Mammoth in size and there early enough design elements that will make you drool over this new luxury MPV. Upfront, there is large signature honeycomb grill flanked by projector headlamps in the top of the variant. Chin of the car is also aggressive thanks to the large air dam which is outlined by the chrome. In the profile, the similarity between hexa and Arya is apparently evident although at the back company has done enough to make it look different from the previous Aria. The best design element in the Hexa, however, is large 19-inch alloy wheels that feel absolutely classy to look owing to their simplicity and demeanour.

Inside the cabin, the quality has taken a giant Leap Forward and in the very first place, it becomes difficult for you to believe that it is actually a Tata car. Plastics are soft touch, ergonomics absolutely fantastic, and the equipment level as if it belongs to car notches higher. As a driver, you sit high which is very good for getting commanding view of the outside. The centre console is well laid out and the only think that doesn't match is small touch screen infotainment system.

Space inside is enough for caring 7-adult in comfort and the middle row is especially very comfortable and generous. Even the third row seat of for ample amount of leg room however for the taller passenger, headroom could be an issue. There is enough boot space with all the rows of seats up and up right but once you fold the seats down, you can even move the house in this car. In terms of feature, Hexa comes loaded with the goodies like six-airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, hill assist, and electronic stability program.

Engine, Transmission, & Dynamics

Under the hood, Hexa comes powered by 2.2-litre turbo-charged diesel engine capable of putting out 158 PS and 400 nm of Max Power and max torque respectively. Additionally, Tata has added 4 different terrain modes that make Hexa quite competent on range of turfs. Both manual and automatic transmissionsare on offer though we sampled the former one. Right off the start, Hexa feels eager and there is enough alacrity offered by this new iteration of turbocharged diesel motor. However we felt that Hexa is comparison to drive in the City because of its last dimensions and heavy steering. The wheel is not as light as one would have expected and although this is a good thing especially on the highway driving, city dwellers will find this heavy staring a bit problematic especially during the early days. Making the U turn on spotting a parking place is quite a task especially when you are driving such a long vehicle. But tables start to turn when it comes to highway driving where Hexa get a chance to come on its own.
This long vehicle is superbly stable and offer good cruising behavior given it gets the time to settle in. The heavy steering become very much responsive and is a delight to use on the long stretches. It bristles with feedback and it is amazing how this large car ride and handle on the road. Ride quality is very Plus and it is Biased in the favor of providing at most comfort to the occupant. Handling too is not bad although there is some body roll which is quite expected from such a tall crossover. Overall we are satisfied with the Dynamics of the car; however, the only weak link in this entire proposition is the gear box which is notchy and rubbery. It requires a lot of effort to put the gear in its right place and the gates are not very well defined. Especially while engage in the reverse gear, one has to very cautious because the gate is so far that most of the time, it plots in 6th gear.

Overall Verdict

Undoubtedly, tata Motors has taken a huge Leap Forward with new Hexa. Not only the company has improved on styling and interiors quality, but also on the crucial front of engine and driving dynamics. Hexa looks contemporary, comes with ample amount of room in space, features a long list of equipment better than even the class above Rivals, and has a very sweet and powerful torquey motor. Additional bonus comes in the form of excellent ride and handling which makes this long car quite stable and very much predictable to drive both in city and out on highway. The cherry on the cake is its value for money as Tata has pricedHexa very competitively with range starting from Rs 11.99 lakh. Weak link where Tata Motor could have improved is manual transmission which doesn't feel inspiring. Overall, Tata Motors which started this improvement with Zest, bettered with Tiago has taken another giant leap with this Hexa crossover.
