Skoda Rapid DSG Road Test Review

We get behind the wheels of Skoda RapidDSG to find whether automatic convenience really makes the light work of traffic.

2016 Skoda Rapid DSG Road Test Review

I owned the Volkswagen Vento and drive it for around 1-lakh km but somewhere I started realising that it was the time to move on and to change the car. That's not to say that my Vento started showing signs of age but I have had enough with its noisy but powerful diesel variant. Being a resident of Gurgaon, I know the traffic intensity and kind of footwork that one needs to do in the bumper to bumper traffic. So I decided to give a shot to the automatic and after test driving many of the automatic cars, I finally decided to buy Skoda Rapid DSG (Dual shift gearbox).

           Skoda Rapid

The real reason behind buying the DSG variant is the convenience of automatic and more specifically, the seamless power delivery that DSG is known for. Especially when compared to the CVT gearbox or AMT, the seamless power delivery of the DSG seals the deal for me. In fact, the power delivery is so smooth and continuous that you will not notice the object and downshift if you are not paying attention to the sound of the engine or tachometer. This is the best part of my Skoda Rapid and I found this continuity absent in other automatics.

Engine, Transmission and Dynamics

The engine of my Skoda is quite powerful and although the power of 81 kW is not something to rave about, the torque of 250 Nm is good enough to propel the car to the three-digit speed without making any unnecessary fuss.

Yes, I admit that engine doesn't sound very refined and at times become intrusive, but I can easily control this by negotiating through the tip-tronic mode of the transmission. Doing the upshift and downshift in the manual mode is quite simple and the best part is the display which shows the gear in which the car is being driven in.

The engine has excellent tractability and it provides power right from the low rev-range. It is especially helpful in the city condition because I need not rev the engine hard in order to get going. Another likeable characteristic of the car is that even in the manual mode the transmission do its calculation and according to the algorithm does the upshift or downshift. In that case, the engine will rev-hard to the red line and the transmission will make the necessary course correction automatically. That is one safety aspect that I like about my Rapid DSG.
          Front and Rear Seats

My Rapid DSG has a good combination of ride and handling; making this car a pleasure to drive. The suspension is on the flip side which means you will feel thump at low speeds but as you pick up the pace, the riding tends to improve. The car shows the admirable characteristic of a well-planted vehicle on the highway which is very desirable and reassuring aspect. Having said that, you need to be careful about sudden Lane changes as the Skoda Rapid doesn't like to be Hustle around. Thankfully there is no oversteer and understeer but you have to be careful about the unplanned manoeuvres. I wish Rapid's steering had a more feedback although it weighs up nicely depending upon the speed you are driving. I also own a Chevrolet Optra which has been discontinued now but it gives me better feedback than the Rapid.
The car comes with the service interval of 1 year or 15,000 km, whichever is earlier and although it cost more than the other conventional cars in its category, the long service interval will make up for the extra money you pay at the service station. Many cars in this category come with a service interval of 10,000 km which ultimately translates into the same kind of cost bearing by the owner.
