Skoda Fabia

Car experts from ecadlr test a fabolous package called Skoda Fabia

Fabia even though is a great package seems to be suffering because of Skoda related issues. Fabia the premium hatchback from Skoda has given its current owners no reason to complain.

Road test of Skoda Fabia

Fabia, finally seems to be finding a place in the consideration set of premium hatch buyers in India. Pricing and high servicing cost has been a major barrier for customers to seek a Fabia earlier. Price corrections and new variants seem to have done the trick. We check out the petrol version to find out it’s chances of success in a highly cluttered cut throat competitive premium hatchback car segment in India.

Skoda Fabia’s front muscular looks is all thanks to its sharp headlamps as well as chin. Large grill with prominent Skoda Badge gives the Fabia a character of its own. Bonnet within the sharp lines & hood along with steeply raked A-pillars makes the car look very upright.

Side profile is pretty similar to that of a Swift (wonder who copied whom) with blacked-out B pillars and small windows. Strong shoulder line extends all the way to the rear & merges with the tail lamps seamlessly.

Large wide windscreen dominates the rear and seems to be out of place. Meek wrapped around tail lamp does not blend with the overall muscular design statement of the car. Overall fit & finish is good with the exceptional paint quality. Doors shut with a solid thud convincing one of Fabia’s build quality.

Top-notch interiors with impeccable fit & finish add dollops of value to the cars tactile feel. Clever and careful use of black internally by Skoda for the Fabia, has managed to create this magic. Double glove box arrangement delivers decent storage space in the front.

The car feels spacious both in the front and rear. Front seats are large and perfectly cushioned. Steering is chunky to hold & adjusts for both reach & rake. This along with height adjustable driver seat makes this car very easy to drive. Ergonomically placed AC knobs at correct height , makes them easy and convenient to use.

Fabia also comes with the convenience of folding the back seat completely. This flat folding rear seat features opens up almost 1180 litres of boot space, moving up from 315 Litres when seats are not in folded position. Baggage hooks in the boot along with illumination are some of the carefully thought through features of the Fabia.

Power to the wheels of Fabia comes through transversally mounted 1198 cc, 3-inline-cylinders, breathing through 12 valves with double overhead cams. The power mill produces 75 bhp of power & 110 Nm of torque. However the 3 cylinder geometry makes the idle a bit coarse, one can always feel the thump once the engine is cranked. Fabia hough is quite agile in the low RPM range and moves with a purpose.

Mid range takes the car past the 3 digit mark quite smoothly and without much fuss and the car eems to be happy cruising in the city.

Top end is the only weakness in an otherwise perfect motor. Highway drive does not feel relaxing. Beyond 4000 RPM the engine starts to sound hoarse. Press it hard and fast and Fabia starts to complain.

Fabia boasts with possibly the most slick 5-Speed transmission among its premium hatchback peers. Gear shifts are ultra smooth with short throws. This along with light steering makes it a pleasurable drive.

Fabia comes with McPherson suspension up front and at the rear uses compound link to suspend the wheels. Lower variants come with 14” wheels while the top-end variant is adorned with 15” alloy wheels.

Car is sprung on the stiffer side; means it is not very comfortable in dealing with the low speed undulations, pot holes are easily felt. The ride though gets flatter with increasing speed. High speed stability is Fabia’s strong point and the car boasts of amazing stability. How we wish the car had the power to compliment its high speed stability.

Corner the Fabia as hard as one wants and it retains its line. Grip level and body controls are very tight. Fabia retains its cohesiveness without deviating from its line at all speeds. Fabia’s dynamic abilities are no less than the class leading stability and dynamic abilities of the Swift.

Starting price of 4.47 lakhs with vault-like build quality, roomy, luxurious interiors with exceptional dynamic qualities makes the Fabia a worthy competitor for your wallet in the premium hatchback segment.  How we wish that VW offers the Skoda its brilliant 1.2 TSI engine tobe fitted under Fabia's hood. The day this happens Skoda Fabia would be an unbeatable car in its segment.

Fabia we therefore believe are for those car buyers who love to cruise without inching to floor the paddle.
