Chevrolet Sail U-VA

Chevrolet Sail UVA - geared and ready for a tough road ahead

With Sail U-VA GM India takes its next logical step towards offering Indian car buyers a car across some of the most favoured segments in the Indian car market. it now has a car starting from sub Rs. 3 lacs to all the way up to Rs.25 lacs. It offers hatchbacks, premium sedans, premium SUV and a MPV for car buyers in India.

Chevrolet Sail U-VA - Geared for a Bigger Battle

Though Chevrolet has made its presence felt in small hatchback category initially with Spark and then with the Beat; large premium hatch space has always remained out of their reach. GM tried its fortunes in this premium category with U-VA but it failed to create any ripples owing to its rather dated look and dull interiors. So for quite some time GM did not have a car in teh premium hatch segment, obviously work in the back-end was being done at a feverish pace to launch a car in this fast growing premium hatch segment.  SAIL U-VA; a car that GM has jointly developed with SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation) has unveiled recently by GM and is now available in all Chevrolet showrooms across India. With Sail UVA, GMI has taken the battle to garner some share of the market right to the doorsteps of Maruti, Hyundai, Tata and Toyota.

But  the crucial question that is looming large is, whether the Sail U-VA co-developed by GM and SIAC has got it all, that is required to contest successfully in India’s most crowded and lucrative segment? Will customers lap up the product that has some sort of association with Chinese quality? Will Sail U-VA from GM / Chevrolet as a proposition stack up against its worthy and sensible competitors?

Whilst answers to such questions will be answered only over time, we at www.ecardlr.com decided to take the Sail U-VA for a spin to understand the car more thoroughly.

One look and it becomes obvious that this premium hatch from GM being sold by Chevrolet is not an aggressive or ultra-chic design that rather differentiates Chevrolet’s offerings from other companies. GM along with SIAC has decided to offer contemporary, acceptable design without going all-out in terms of giving it a new look to the Indian car buyer in premium hatch segment. Maybe it’s the Chinese association or maybe GMI wants to bank on substance rather than style to woo the feature spoilt premium hatch buyers in India. Sail U-VA does not look as bold as the Beat or Cruze at least externally. Sail U-VA externally is meant for all those car buyers in India who shy away from taking centre stage, who are far more understated in whatever they do. Sail U-VA we believe is meant for those who believe in substance rather than style and this segment constitutes a rather big chunk of buyers.

There is virtual V-shape grill with Chevrolet golden bow-tie situated at centre to embellish the front fascia. Hawk-wing style headlamps flaunt themselves aggressively and also flank the grill nicely. Air dam is also angular in nature and bonnet get’s a dominant bulge at the centre.

Side design also follows the cues of practicality though there are sleek lines running across the length of Sail U-VA. What though grabs attention is the heavily raked roof line which abruptly changes its angle after crossing the B-pillar. This has made the C Pillar rather upright thus impacting the side profile of the car negatively in terms of its overall looks.

Head-on rear of Sail U-VA has nothing special to offer which could have added to the cars overall style quotient. Sail U-VA boasts of a plump rear bumper and upward stretching tail lamps which unfortunately makes Sail U-VA look dated. Even the loading lip is quite high and aperture too narrow.

Overall Sail U-VA makes an average impression on the styling front and is nowhere near the styling benchmark GM India is known for, thanks to a cool Beat and premium Cruze.

The substance part of Sail U-VA start’s with its interiors. The feeling of space and practicality hits you the moment one peeks inside the car. But unfortunately GM seems to have focused a bit more on practicality rather than creating some interesting differentiation. To start with the cabin boasts of dual-cockpit design with soothing combination of coffee-beige colour. Not only these colours blend seamlessly but also augment the rather spacious cabin of the Sail U-VA.

Overall quality of material is good and hard wearing but far from exuding any kind of luxury. Centre console though functional and intuitive but lacks the modern cabin’s flair. Rising sun style instrument cluster looks good and digital rev counter add some excitement to otherwise very practical and sensible design.

Front seats are big, large but fall short on bolstering though support is ample. Rotary air knobs are functional though the glove box is bit shallow. However door pockets are large and big enough to carry large bottles.

Settle at the back and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the abundance of all-around space. Though the downward slopping does hint a compromise on headroom, but once inside the reality is quite different. Legroom along with knee room and headroom is available inside the Sail U-VA in abundance. Without doubt Sail U-VA offers to its buyers a spacious and roomy cabin.

Same spaciousness of cabin has been carried forward to trunk area as Sail U-VA boasts of decent 248 litres of cargo room which reaches an astonishing figure of 1,134 litres with fully folded rear bench. This however requires some space compromise at the front seats where driver has to move its seating position a bit close to steering.

Buyers of Sail U-VA at least won’t complain of cramped feeling inside the car for sure unlike many of its worthy competitors in the premium hatch segment

Sail U-VA comes with two engine options; one each of petrol and diesel. We tested our hand on current India’s favourite a car with diesel car. As GM has co-developed the famous multi-jet diesel engine with Fiat so there is no prize for guessing that Sail U-VA comes with the same multi-jet diesel engine boasting of 1.3 L of cubic capacity. It dishes out 78 PS of power (4 PS more than other cars using same heart) and 205 NM of torque (15 Nm more).

Idling of engine is not very silent and Sail U-VA scores average on the refinement front. But when it comes to tractability Sail U-VA is all set to become a benchmark in city driving. The same multi-jet diesel engine behaves entirely different in Sail U-VA and there is no problem of traction even in low range of the rpms’. It initially seemed that Sail U-VA has used gearing on the shorter side to get this exceptional practicality but then we got even more surprised with the its mid-range behaviour which shows not even an iota of hint related to trailing off the power during rev-build up.

Similar to the impressive nature of engine, gear box makes its mark with short and direct throws. Clutch is light but travel a bit long. Brakes are effective and steering is very light. This will aid the city driving though it will leave you clueless about the car dynamics at the high speeds.

Sail U-VA uses McPherson struts up front while twist axle beam suspends rear wheels. 14” alloy wheels are shrouded with 175 mm of wide rubber with height to width ratio of 70. Ride of the Sail U-VA is pretty much sorted and passengers won’t complaints about the bumps creeping inside though there is slight hint of firmness that is perceptible at slow speed. Still Sail U-VA makes a decent case for itself on ride front and this fact will surely be appreciated by the practical Indian customers.

On the handling front also Sail U-VA won’t give up easily and opposite to our presumption this Chinese collaboration is not something that tends to roll heavily. So Sail U-VA strikes a very balancing act when it comes to the dynamic ability. One must admit that the driving dynamics are skewed in favour of ride characteristic.

With starting price of 4.44 lakh (petrol base model) top diesel variant goes all the way to 6.62 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). On value for money Sail is an excellent proposition and it has the ability to give a tough fight to other premium hatchbacks. And not only on VFM aspect, Sail U-VA has all the necessary ingredients that makes it a sensible, practical and sober proposition especially for the city run. It might not having top range performance of Swift or dynamics of Punto but then it comes equipped with large and spacious cabin, decent ride, cavernous boot with aided flexibility of rear bench and fuel-efficient diesel heart. We think the GM through Chevrolet has put its best foot forward with Sail U-VA and our only wish is that it would have been made more impact had they retained their design DNA. Nonetheless we still believe that Sail U-VA won’t disappoint Indian car buyers looking for an everyday practical city run-about.
